Higher Education and Making Each
Academic Unit Count
EDUCATION
by
by
Vickie Becker
Steve Fillingim
When something is important we
typically pay greater attention and
when it gets to the critically important
level we usually “really” pay attention.
When selecting a college to attend the
topic of transferability of college units
is critically … really … important.
Why, you ask, because it will often
determine if the units associated with
the academic courses you took (and
passed) will actually transfer to another
higher education institution, and will
the degree you earned allow you to
continue to the next academic level.
Specifically, transferring college
units from a community college to a
four-year college or university, with
the goal of earning a bachelor degree,
is very important and even critical.
Being able to transfer units assures
that academic credits will actually
transfer when the community college
and the university have a formalized
transfer guideline. This type of agreement
identifies individual courses that
transfer from the sending college to the
receiving college.
The Azusa Pacific University
(APU) Professional Programs Admissions
Department recently worked
with Janet McCurdy, Mt. San Jacinto
College (MSJC) Articulation Officer/
Coordinator, to accurately create Transfer
Guidelines for the APU Professional
Undergraduate Bachelor of Arts (BA)
degrees in Psychology, Criminal Justice,
and Liberal Studies. The Transfer
Guidelines clearly identify the MSJC
courses that are approved for transfer
to the specific APU undergraduate academic
programs. MSJC students will
work with the MSJC College Counselors
to identify the courses that transfer to
their desired APU BA degree program.
The week of August 31, students
at the APU Murrieta Regional Campus
will begin earning BA degrees in Psychology,
Criminal Justice, and Liberal
Studies. Now is the time to contact the
APU Murrieta Regional Campus to
see what previously taken college units
will transfer into the newly offered
academic degrees. We look forward to
sharing about these exciting BA degree
opportunities.
Teacher Kim Huth Presented with March ‘ Teachers
are Heroes’ Award
Celebrating educators who go far
above and beyond the call of duty, the Azusa
Pacific University (APU) Teachers are
Heroes program shines a spotlight on one of
the most important professions…teaching!
On Tuesday, April 5, 2016, APU and KATY
101.3 The Mix recognized Temecula Valley
Charter School teacher Kim Huth as the
March Teachers are Heroes winner. Ms.
Huth’s efforts are making a difference in
the lives of so many children.
Huth is currently a 1st grade teacher
at Temecula Valley Charter
School in Winchester and
has 26 students in her classroom.
She has been teaching
for 15 years and has taught
Kinder-1st-2nd grades. Her
focus before teaching was
in the hotel industry where
she worked for Marriott
Hotels. During this time she
received her degree in business
marketing. The 14-hour
days were not conducive to
raising a family so she made
the change to education and
has never looked back!
Jeanette Carvajal, parent
to one of Huth’s students,
nominated Huth and said,
“She is extremely positive,
caring and engaging with the
kids. Ms. Huth makes learning fun with
any assignment given. She has overcome
her own disabilities and is able to show kids
you can be anything!”
Huth was presented with the Teachers
are Heroes award and some special prizes
from The Mix Prize Closet and APU. Following
the presentation, Huth and her class
were treated to a pizza party provided by
the Temecula Pizza Factory.
Ms. Huth and previous Teachers
are Heroes award recipients including
their classes are invited to attend a special
Teachers are Heroes celebration at the Lake
Elsinore Storm Stadium in May.
