SOCIETY AND CULTURE: METHODOLOGY AND PRACTICES<br />
SCMP 500 Introduction to Curriculum Contexts:<br />
Learning and Learners (6) A<br />
Students will study underlying philosophical and<br />
epistemological bases of educational practices and<br />
transitions in educational practices at different historical<br />
periods of time in Canada and other western countries.<br />
Students will critically analyze how and why disciplines<br />
normally used to organize and present information have<br />
shifted over time. The course will pay particular attention<br />
to cultural and societal anomalies, as well as current<br />
debates regarding educational practice (e.g.,<br />
inclusion/non-inclusion, constructivist/transmission-based<br />
approaches).<br />
SCMP 600 Understanding and Applications of<br />
Curriculum Contexts: Teachers and Teaching (3) A<br />
This course introduces student teachers to selected ideas<br />
and practices teachers use to develop a teaching<br />
worldview and for students to understand how worldview<br />
knowledge influences teaching and teachers. In this<br />
course, the second of three graduated and integrated<br />
courses in the Society and Culture: Methodologies and<br />
Practices component, student teachers pay particular<br />
attention to various forms of teacher and teaching<br />
knowledge and the influence of this knowledge in both<br />
human behaviour and current practices in teaching.<br />
Student teachers will be given opportunities to integrate<br />
into a personal learning plan, mission statement, and<br />
philosophy of teaching statement their understanding of<br />
teaching and teachers and the emerging worldview<br />
regarding both. This course will provide student teachers<br />
with an opportunity to begin developing a teaching e-<br />
portfolio.<br />

SCMP 700 Schools and Classrooms: Society and<br />
Culture (3) A<br />
This course introduces students to action-based learning<br />
and problem-solving approaches to school, culture and<br />
society. In this online course students will develop a<br />
strategic plan to provide transferable solutions to a living<br />
case, an actual school and culture and society problem.<br />
This course emphasizes large scale assessment and<br />
effective student assessment.<br />

English Literature<br />
EN 100 Introduction to Creative Writing (3) A<br />
This course is introductory workshop course in the writing<br />
of poetry and short prose fiction, emphasizing the<br />
centrality of reading and revision to successful literary<br />
composition. Students will engage in regular writing<br />
assignments and discuss the craft of creative writing. The<br />
class will also develop students’ literary analytical skills<br />
through discussion of both students’ own work and that of<br />
published authors. There may also be additional in-class<br />
writing exercises from time to time.<br />
Prerequisite: EN 115<br />
EN 115 Introduction to Literature and Language (3) A<br />
This course introduces students to post-secondary studies<br />
in English by exploring developments in literature and<br />
language in and over time. Students will have<br />
opportunities to study particular themes and compare<br />
different genre.<br />

EN 200 Intermediate Creative Writing (3) A<br />
This course is an intermediate workshop course in the<br />
writing of poetry and short prose fiction, developing the<br />
foundation of reading and revision skills laid down in<br />
ENCW 200. Students will engage in intensive writing<br />
assignments and discuss detailed aspects of the craft of<br />
creative writing. The class will also further develop<br />
students’ literary analytical skills through discussion of<br />
both students’ own work and that of published authors.<br />
There may also be additional in-class writing exercises<br />
from time to time.<br />
Prerequisite: EN 200 or portfolio<br />
EN 220a Representative Literary Works: Medieval to<br />
Romanticism (3) A<br />
A foundational course in literary studies, this class<br />
provides an introduction to a wide range of literary works<br />
in English from the eighth century to the late eighteenth<br />
century. The course introduces students to the breadth of<br />
genres that comprise the English literary tradition.<br />
Significant attention will be given to critical reading skills<br />
and further development of writing skills.<br />
