Prep Aquarams Raise Tide In Another
Winning Season
Defeat Arch Rival
Columbia Prep
The 1975-76 Fordham Prep swimming team enjoyed a
most prosperous season, leaving all but one of its seven
opponents in its rising tide.
The team faced many top-notch private school teams,
including Chaminade, St. Mary's (Manhasset), and St.
Mary's of Greenwich. The high point of the season was the
Prep's defeat of its archrival, Columbia Prep, in a very close
and strategic meet. This victory summed up much of the
spirit and determination of the team, and, finally, brought
to light the full credit which belongs to the coach, Mr. Joseph
Bernal, and the moderator, Fr. James Shields, S.J..
Guided by these two men, the team has matured in three
years from a team with potential to one with not only plenty
of talent, but one with plenty of class as well.
This year brought a new dimension: depth. For the past
few years the team has lacked the swimmers who can
bring in the vital points of third and fourth place finishes.
However, the development of co-captains Dieter Freer and
Conrad Gaskin, along with a whole team of seniors and
juniors, filled that vacancy. The team has also added such
top-line swimmers as Freshman Mark Hicks, Kurt Mayer,
and Peter Marshall to the likes of Bobby Hackett, and Tom
Campbell, the third co-captain of the team. This mixture of
talent and incomparable spirit brought home a great season.
