the plants, thus reducing soil evaporation and improving soil <strong>water</strong> status <strong>of</strong> the root zone.<br />

Saranga et al. (1998) <strong>measured</strong> average lint yield <strong>values</strong> <strong>of</strong> 1300 kg ha −1 in a field trial with<br />

deficit irrigation, while seasonal ET act was very low with 390 mm (see Fig. 2c). Howell<br />

et al. (1984) <strong>measured</strong> similar <strong>values</strong> (0.33 kg m −3 ) in an experiment with high frequency<br />

trickle irrigation and reduced <strong>water</strong> deficits management <strong>for</strong> narrow row cotton in Cali<strong>for</strong>nia<br />

(USA). Lint yield was more than 2000 kg m −3 , while seasonal ET act was relatively<br />

low (617 mm). The range <strong>for</strong> cotton seed yield is with 0.41–0.95 kg m −3 higher than the<br />

range given in FAO33 (0.4–0.6 kg m −3 ). In Argentina maximum <strong>values</strong> were <strong>measured</strong><br />
