Keeping Jefferson a Cool
Place While Reducing Its
Carbon Footprint
Timely <strong>and</strong> ongoing maintenance of facilities <strong>and</strong> grounds plays a critical role in the College’s goal <strong>to</strong> become more energy efficient <strong>and</strong>
reduce its carbon footprint. In 2014, Jefferson installed an air-cooled chiller with four t<strong>her</strong>mal s<strong>to</strong>rage tanks outside the McVean Student
Center. The chiller plant is able <strong>to</strong> provide an energy efficient cooling method <strong>to</strong> a building that was constructed in 1966 without a cooling
unit. The McVean building houses the theater, gymnasium <strong>and</strong> fitness center along with offices. “We want college renovation <strong>to</strong> be as
green as possible <strong>and</strong> the air-cooled chiller is aligned with our green initiatives,” said Bruce Alex<strong>and</strong>er, direc<strong>to</strong>r of facilities.
The plant makes ice during off-peak hours at night <strong>and</strong> during the day, the ice <strong>and</strong> the chiller work <strong>to</strong>get<strong>her</strong> <strong>to</strong> cool the facility. Maintaining
a more consistent temperature throughout the building increases comfort <strong>to</strong> students <strong>and</strong> campus visi<strong>to</strong>rs <strong>and</strong> provides a more
positive learning environment. The project serves as a model for future projects including the new John W. Deans Collaborative Learning
Center (opening in March) <strong>and</strong> as an educational resource for students.
The ice chiller system was featured by the State University of New York as a project that aligns with Governor Cuomo’s REV (Reforming the
Energy Vision) Campus Challenge. Jefferson participated in a REV Campus Challenge Workshop panel in June 2015 in Albany <strong>to</strong> share this
model project with colleagues across the state.
