Dr. Carla Over<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g>n<br />

At age 8, Carla Over<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g>n already had the idea in <str<strong>on</strong>g>her</str<strong>on</strong>g> head that she would<br />

someday become a doc<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g>r. For <strong>on</strong>e reas<strong>on</strong>, “I was a wicked book nerd”<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> fascinated with s<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g>ries about people battling illnesses, she said. She is<br />

<strong>on</strong>e of four children of Ralph “S<str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g>y” Over<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g>n, Adams, <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> Elaine Over<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g>n,<br />

Water<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g>wn. Her mot<str<strong>on</strong>g>her</str<strong>on</strong>g> had also worked as a nurse for many years at a<br />

Water<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g>wn medical practice.<br />

When she graduated from Water<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g>wn High School in 2001, she was not<br />

yet ready <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> spread <str<strong>on</strong>g>her</str<strong>on</strong>g> wings. “I was a homebody <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> at the time, t<str<strong>on</strong>g>her</str<strong>on</strong>g>e<br />

wasn’t any particular college outside the area that I had a str<strong>on</strong>g interest<br />

in attending,” she said. She decided <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> enroll in the mathematics <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

science degree program at Jeffers<strong>on</strong> Community College, w<str<strong>on</strong>g>her</str<strong>on</strong>g>e she met<br />

“some amazing professors, <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g>ok some very interesting classes, <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> received<br />

a lot of pers<strong>on</strong>al attenti<strong>on</strong>,” Dr. Over<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g>n said. “I gained a lot of c<strong>on</strong>fidence<br />

at JCC,” she said. “It prepared me <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> transfer <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> a four-year college.”<br />

While at Jeffers<strong>on</strong>, Dr. Over<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g>n was awarded the JCC Outst<str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g>ing <str<strong>on</strong>g>Science</str<strong>on</strong>g> Student Award <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> the Faculty Associati<strong>on</strong> Outst<str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g>ing<br />

Student Award. It was not <strong>on</strong>ly through <str<strong>on</strong>g>her</str<strong>on</strong>g> classes, but also through <str<strong>on</strong>g>her</str<strong>on</strong>g> involvement in programs <strong>on</strong> the campus, such as tu<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g>ring<br />

ot<str<strong>on</strong>g>her</str<strong>on</strong>g> students <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> giving campus <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g>urs, that helped <str<strong>on</strong>g>her</str<strong>on</strong>g> become more outgoing <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> c<strong>on</strong>fident, she said. Dr. Over<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g>n also served as<br />

Vice President of Student Government at JCC.<br />

During <str<strong>on</strong>g>her</str<strong>on</strong>g> sec<strong>on</strong>d year at Jeffers<strong>on</strong>, she spent <str<strong>on</strong>g>her</str<strong>on</strong>g> spring break traveling with a group of physicians <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> ot<str<strong>on</strong>g>her</str<strong>on</strong>g> healthcare providers <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

the Dominican Republic, w<str<strong>on</strong>g>her</str<strong>on</strong>g>e they worked out of a mobile clinic. That experience furt<str<strong>on</strong>g>her</str<strong>on</strong>g> reinforced <str<strong>on</strong>g>her</str<strong>on</strong>g> decisi<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> enter the field<br />

of medicine. After graduating from JCC in 2003, Dr. Over<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g>n enrolled in the pre-med program at Cornell University. Staff at JCC were<br />

instrumental in helping <str<strong>on</strong>g>her</str<strong>on</strong>g> with transfer credits. In two years, she earned a bachelor’s degree in <str<strong>on</strong>g>Science</str<strong>on</strong>g>-Human Biology Health <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

Society from Cornell, applied <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> medical school <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> then decided <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> withdraw <str<strong>on</strong>g>her</str<strong>on</strong>g> medical school applicati<strong>on</strong>s in order <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> spend some<br />

time learning outside the classroom before starting the rigorous program of study.<br />

She taught fifth-grade in a low-income area in Baltimore, Maryl<str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g>, through the Teach for America Corps Program, <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> also pursued<br />

graduate work in Educati<strong>on</strong> at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore. Then she decided it was time <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> return <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> New York State <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> finish<br />

what she had started.<br />

She applied <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> was accepted <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> Upstate Medical University, <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> graduated four years later in 2011 with a Doc<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g>r of Medicine degree.<br />

During <str<strong>on</strong>g>her</str<strong>on</strong>g> time at Upstate, she also worked in a few more medical assistance trips <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> underserved areas in Peru <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> Costa Rica. Dr.<br />

Over<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g>n then completed a three-year residency in pediatrics, also at Upstate Medical University, in 2014.<br />

Dr. Over<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g>n, 33, is married <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> Michael Walsh, an engineer in Syracuse. They have two daughters, Tessa, 3, <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> Holly, 1.<br />

Danielle DeB<strong>on</strong>a <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> Jordan Sawyer<br />

Both Danielle DeB<strong>on</strong>a <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> Jordan Sawyer knew they wanted <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> work in<br />

the healthcare field after graduating from high school, but neit<str<strong>on</strong>g>her</str<strong>on</strong>g> was<br />

sure which specific career path <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> pursue. The couple, who were married<br />

last summer, decided their best opti<strong>on</strong> was <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> start at Jeffers<strong>on</strong>.<br />

Ms. DeB<strong>on</strong>a, a 2009 graduate of General Brown Central School District,<br />

was awarded the Jeffers<strong>on</strong>-Can Community Scholars Program. This<br />

program of the Nort<str<strong>on</strong>g>her</str<strong>on</strong>g>n New York Community Foundati<strong>on</strong>, in partnership<br />

with the JCC Foundati<strong>on</strong>, provides full tuiti<strong>on</strong> first-year scholarships<br />

for students in Jeffers<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> Lewis counties graduating in the <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g>p 15% of<br />

their high school class, after all ot<str<strong>on</strong>g>her</str<strong>on</strong>g> financial aid is applied.<br />

“After I graduated from high school, I <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g>ok advantage of staying at home<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> attending my first year of college for free at JCC,” she said. “I was<br />

Pho<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> courtesy of AFM Pho<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g>graphy<br />

unsure what career I wanted <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> pursue at that time, so it made sense <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

stay local <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> give myself time <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> figure it out.” JCC professors helped <str<strong>on</strong>g>her</str<strong>on</strong>g> gain practical experience by referring <str<strong>on</strong>g>her</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> the Fort Drum<br />

Regi<strong>on</strong>al Health Planning Organizati<strong>on</strong>, which provided <str<strong>on</strong>g>her</str<strong>on</strong>g> an internship in radiati<strong>on</strong> t<str<strong>on</strong>g>her</str<strong>on</strong>g>apy. “I was able <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> shadow a radiati<strong>on</strong><br />

t<str<strong>on</strong>g>her</str<strong>on</strong>g>apist <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> get a better underst<str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g>ing of what they did <strong>on</strong> a day-<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g>-day basis,” she said. “After deciding this was the field I wanted <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

pursue, t<str<strong>on</strong>g>her</str<strong>on</strong>g>e were many professors at JCC who helped me achieve my goal.”<br />

One way was <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> make sure she had met all the prerequisites required <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> start at Upstate Medical University up<strong>on</strong> graduati<strong>on</strong> from JCC,<br />

she said. Not <strong>on</strong>ly did attending Jeffers<strong>on</strong> save both <str<strong>on</strong>g>her</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>her</str<strong>on</strong>g> husb<str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> m<strong>on</strong>ey, but it “definitely prepared us <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> furt<str<strong>on</strong>g>her</str<strong>on</strong>g> our educati<strong>on</strong>,”<br />

said Ms. DeB<strong>on</strong>a.<br />
