Jeffers<strong>on</strong> mathematics <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> science major <str<strong>on</strong>g>Lauren</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>Kent</str<strong>on</strong>g> spent three weeks in South <str<strong>on</strong>g>Africa</str<strong>on</strong>g> learning about<br />

the impact of infectious disease as a participant of the study abroad Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) Internati<strong>on</strong>al<br />

Scholar Laureate Program (ISLP). Her drive <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> dedicati<strong>on</strong>, combined with <str<strong>on</strong>g>her</str<strong>on</strong>g> passi<strong>on</strong> for medicine, led<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>her</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> such an incredible learning experience, <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> the realizati<strong>on</strong> of the tremendous amount of support<br />

available <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> students at JCC.<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>Lauren</str<strong>on</strong>g> is <strong>on</strong>e of many adult students at JCC. She joined the U.S. Navy right after high school <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> all throughout<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>her</str<strong>on</strong>g> enlistment she dreamed of a career in medicine. Jeffers<strong>on</strong> has provided <str<strong>on</strong>g>Lauren</str<strong>on</strong>g> with multiple outlets <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> help<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>her</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>her</str<strong>on</strong>g> journey. While she is drawn <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> the world of anesthesiology, <str<strong>on</strong>g>her</str<strong>on</strong>g> experience studying in <str<strong>on</strong>g>Africa</str<strong>on</strong>g> strengthened<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>her</str<strong>on</strong>g> desire <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> work with doc<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g>rs who specialize in infectious disease.<br />

President of JCC’s Tau Xi chapter of PTK, <str<strong>on</strong>g>Lauren</str<strong>on</strong>g> was <strong>on</strong>e of twenty-six students from all over the world <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> participate<br />

in the 3-week PTK ISLP. One of the most difficult parts about participating in a study abroad program can<br />

be the cost. Determined not <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> let the cost st<str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> in the way of <str<strong>on</strong>g>her</str<strong>on</strong>g> dreams, <str<strong>on</strong>g>Lauren</str<strong>on</strong>g> sought advice from the JCC<br />

community <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> began <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> seek a sp<strong>on</strong>sor. After approaching <strong>on</strong>e organizati<strong>on</strong> <strong>on</strong> campus, she was referred <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

anot<str<strong>on</strong>g>her</str<strong>on</strong>g> potential sp<strong>on</strong>sor, then anot<str<strong>on</strong>g>her</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> anot<str<strong>on</strong>g>her</str<strong>on</strong>g>. Before l<strong>on</strong>g, she had the support of JCC’s Tau Xi Chapter of<br />

Phi Theta Kappa, Student Government, Faculty Student Associati<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> Jeffers<strong>on</strong> Community College Foundati<strong>on</strong><br />

in additi<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> local rotary clubs. <str<strong>on</strong>g>Lauren</str<strong>on</strong>g> was truly humbled by the resp<strong>on</strong>se that she received. “I cried when I got<br />

all these different sp<strong>on</strong>sorships <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> scholarships,” says <str<strong>on</strong>g>Lauren</str<strong>on</strong>g>, “It was a really humbling moment for me that this<br />

school, <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> all the different parts of this school <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> community were so invested in my success.” With the support<br />

of multiple groups <strong>on</strong> campus <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> the community, <str<strong>on</strong>g>Lauren</str<strong>on</strong>g> was able <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> raise enough funds <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> completely cover<br />

the cost of <str<strong>on</strong>g>her</str<strong>on</strong>g> trip <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g>taling over $8,000.<br />

During <str<strong>on</strong>g>her</str<strong>on</strong>g> time in South <str<strong>on</strong>g>Africa</str<strong>on</strong>g>, <str<strong>on</strong>g>Lauren</str<strong>on</strong>g>’s world view exp<str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g>ed tremendously, particularly <str<strong>on</strong>g>her</str<strong>on</strong>g> views <strong>on</strong> healthcare<br />

outside the U.S. “Looking at it from a multicultural <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> cross cultural perspective, t<str<strong>on</strong>g>her</str<strong>on</strong>g>e were a lot of things that I<br />

didn’t even realize that are so comm<strong>on</strong>place <str<strong>on</strong>g>her</str<strong>on</strong>g>e, are not even a c<strong>on</strong>siderati<strong>on</strong> t<str<strong>on</strong>g>her</str<strong>on</strong>g>e,” says <str<strong>on</strong>g>Lauren</str<strong>on</strong>g>.<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>Lauren</str<strong>on</strong>g> was hit hardest when she learned about the effect the spread of HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) has<br />

<strong>on</strong> the children left behind after their parents are taken by the disease. Child-headed households are not uncomm<strong>on</strong>,<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> children orphaned by HIV still carry the stigma of the disease. In such a traditi<strong>on</strong>al culture <str<strong>on</strong>g>Lauren</str<strong>on</strong>g> feels<br />

that the educati<strong>on</strong> of children about HIV is paramount. “In order <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> shift the stigma associated with being infected,<br />

you have <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> reach out <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> the children <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> educate them, so that a new generati<strong>on</strong> is born with new ways of thinking.”<br />

With <str<strong>on</strong>g>Lauren</str<strong>on</strong>g> spearheading the effort, JCC’s Tau Xi Chapter of PTK is taking <strong>on</strong> the initiative of procuring 500<br />

copies of the children’s book titled Brenda Has a Drag<strong>on</strong> in Her Blood by author Hijltje Vink that explains HIV is a<br />

live-able disease <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> with proper educati<strong>on</strong> t<str<strong>on</strong>g>her</str<strong>on</strong>g>e are ways <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> keep the drag<strong>on</strong> asleep.<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>Lauren</str<strong>on</strong>g> actively encourages <str<strong>on</strong>g>her</str<strong>on</strong>g> fellow students <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> take advantage of the programs available that allow them <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

exp<str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> their horiz<strong>on</strong>s academically <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> as global citizens. “They want you <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> do well. They want you be successful,”<br />

she says, “I think that JCC has been really great, the level of care that I got from all the instruc<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g>rs is w<strong>on</strong>derful<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> they really are invested in your success.” <str<strong>on</strong>g>Lauren</str<strong>on</strong>g> anticipates graduating in May with plans <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> c<strong>on</strong>tinue pursuing<br />

a degree in the medical field.<br />
