Scholarship Highlight<br />
The Jenelle Amedeo Berry<br />
<str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> Christina McKenzie Berry<br />
Memorial Scholarship<br />
Established in 1997, this scholarship h<strong>on</strong>ors<br />
the memory of Jenelle Amedeo Berry,<br />
whose lifel<strong>on</strong>g dream was <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> make a difference<br />
in children’s lives through <str<strong>on</strong>g>her</str<strong>on</strong>g> passi<strong>on</strong><br />
for teaching. It also h<strong>on</strong>ors the memory of<br />
Jenelle’s four-year-old daughter, Christina<br />
McKenzie Berry, whose profound pers<strong>on</strong>ality<br />
<str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> knowledge bey<strong>on</strong>d <str<strong>on</strong>g>her</str<strong>on</strong>g> years mirrored that of a mot<str<strong>on</strong>g>her</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />
whose talent for teaching <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> loving children showed in <str<strong>on</strong>g>her</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />
daughter’s character. The purpose of the scholarship is <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> assist a<br />
young pers<strong>on</strong> with that passi<strong>on</strong> for “making a difference” <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> realize<br />
his or <str<strong>on</strong>g>her</str<strong>on</strong>g> dream of becoming a teac<str<strong>on</strong>g>her</str<strong>on</strong>g>.<br />
Jenelle Amedeo Berry was born <strong>on</strong> December 19, 1974. She<br />
graduated from South Jeffers<strong>on</strong> High School in 1993, JCC in 1994,<br />
<str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> SUNY Oswego in 1996. As a high school student, Jenelle was<br />
involved in Cheerleading, Soccer, Spanish Club, Future Teac<str<strong>on</strong>g>her</str<strong>on</strong>g>s,<br />
<str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> Project Charlie (a program that involved interacti<strong>on</strong> with<br />
younger students regarding such subjects as sex, drugs, <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />
domestic problems). Jenelle remained immersed in projects which<br />
involved young people throughout <str<strong>on</strong>g>her</str<strong>on</strong>g> college years <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> was<br />
h<strong>on</strong>ored when she was accepted in<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> the Teac<str<strong>on</strong>g>her</str<strong>on</strong>g>’s Internati<strong>on</strong>al<br />
H<strong>on</strong>or Sorority at SUNY Oswego. She student taught at Pulaski <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />
General Brown.<br />

Scholarship Recepti<strong>on</strong><br />
To make the process of giving <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> receiving scholarships more<br />
pers<strong>on</strong>al between d<strong>on</strong>or <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> recipient, the JCC College Foundati<strong>on</strong><br />
will host the Annual Scholarship Recepti<strong>on</strong> <strong>on</strong> Thursday, April 28,<br />
2016. Scholarships are made possible through private d<strong>on</strong>ati<strong>on</strong>s<br />
from individuals, service clubs, organizati<strong>on</strong>s <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> Foundati<strong>on</strong>s. If you<br />
are a JCC scholarship recipient, mark your calendar <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> watch for<br />
your invitati<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> arrive in the mail.<br />
Jenelle was a compassi<strong>on</strong>ate <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> caring pers<strong>on</strong>. Her smile would<br />
light up even the darkest of rooms <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>her</str<strong>on</strong>g> laughter filled many<br />
hearts. Jenelle had a love <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> passi<strong>on</strong> for children that far surpassed<br />
even <str<strong>on</strong>g>her</str<strong>on</strong>g> own realizati<strong>on</strong> of such a gift. She saw the beauty<br />
in them, the individual hues within the colors of each child. She<br />
genuinely desired <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> not <strong>on</strong>ly teach them, but <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> actually make a<br />
difference in their attitudes <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g>ward themselves, <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> their lives. One<br />
of <str<strong>on</strong>g>her</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>on</strong>ce troubled eighth grade General Brown students stated<br />
the following:<br />
Mrs. Berry was the <strong>on</strong>e teac<str<strong>on</strong>g>her</str<strong>on</strong>g> I will always remember. She really<br />
cared about me <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> she changed my life. She made me feel like I was<br />
worth something. I am going <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> do the best I can now <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> make a difference<br />
for some<strong>on</strong>e else’s life like she did for me.<br />
Jenelle married Chris<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g>p<str<strong>on</strong>g>her</str<strong>on</strong>g> Berry, purchased a home <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> settled<br />
in Rodman. Christina was born <strong>on</strong> February 21, 1993, <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> they<br />
were expecting their sec<strong>on</strong>d child in January of 1998. Jenelle was<br />
employed at the Dutch Hill Day Care Center in Adams Center <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />
had been hired by St. Peter’s School in Lowville, New York as a first<br />
grade teac<str<strong>on</strong>g>her</str<strong>on</strong>g>, w<str<strong>on</strong>g>her</str<strong>on</strong>g>e she was scheduled <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> begin <str<strong>on</strong>g>her</str<strong>on</strong>g> professi<strong>on</strong>al<br />
teaching career in September of 1997.<br />
Christina, Jenelle, <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> Jenelle’s unborn child were tragically killed<br />
in a car accident <strong>on</strong> July 2, 1997.<br />
Our hope for this scholarship is <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> not <strong>on</strong>ly memorialize two<br />
beautiful people, but <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> carry <strong>on</strong> Jenelle’s legacy through the eyes<br />
<str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> heart of a student whose passi<strong>on</strong> for teaching children is as<br />
insurmountable as <str<strong>on</strong>g>her</str<strong>on</strong>g>s was.<br />
