8 2016 A QUARTERLY NEWS PUBLICATION FROM SRI <strong>VISHNU</strong> EDUCATIONAL SOCIETY FULL THROTTLE SVECW Girls at BAJA SAE INDIA 2016 The 9th BAJA 2016 competition was remarkable for yet another historic event. It dispelled the general notion that mechanical or automobile branches of engineering are meant for boys only and girls show less interest. Flabbergasting all the assumptions, a team of women mechanical engineers representing Shri Vishnu Engineering College for women, Bhimavaram, Andhra Pradesh, made their debut into the competition BAJA 2016. They have cleared the virtual round and are getting ready for the next rounds to challenge supremacy of boys in this field and proclaim to the world the capabilities of womenfolk of south India. It is the first women team representing South India ever since the beginning of BAJA competitions, can uplift the spirits of many women engineers. Creation of industry ready skilled engineers is a prerequisite to achieve the targets that have been set forth in the Automotive Mission Plan of 2016 for India. BAJA is one such initiative from SAE INDIA (Society of Automotive Engineers) that provides an opportunity for students to get hands on learning experience in vehicle design. The rapid increase in the number of teams from SAEINDIA clubs and colleges across the country and the unparalleled enthusiasm of everyone involved with this event is clear evidence that BAJA SAEINDIA is making progress in the right direction. The event stands as a test for the fusion of intellectual potentialities and corporeal capabilities of contestants. Motorsports in India have been gaining enormous significance in the past few years. In view of this, Baja SAE has gained significant popularity amongst students in India recently. To meet Technology Road Map of India's vision, we need lots of good engineers. These Human Resources can be multiplied by encouraging women to enter into engineering. Baja is one such initiative, where Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics are synthesized. The project fuels the exuberance of the youth, by providing teams with a platform to test their mettle, giving them a pragmatic exposure to real world challenges as faced in the industry. Students realize their talent through such an experience, making them deserving candidates for the future as technocrats, entrepreneurs, designers, innovators and leaders. This helps the objective of bringing out student talent to serve the nation for the years to come, in fulfillment of the Automotive Mission Plan a dream to make India an International Automotive Hub. Last year over 100 engineering students were placed in different automobile companies like General Motors, Mahindra and Mahindra, John Deere, Cummins India, ARAI and SAE. These companies offer annual salaries in between 3 lakh to 8 lakh. Due to practical knowledge and hands on experience, these students perform better than any other post graduate engineering students. ISSUE <strong>11</strong> APRIL 2016 9 The Genesis The BAJA SAE Competition originated at the University of South Carolina in 1976, under the supervision of Dr. J. F. Stevens. Since then, the competition has grown to become a premier engineering design series for university teams. The series consists of seven competitions, of these, three competitions are held in North America under the sponsorship of SAE. The Indian competition is about 9 years old, and growing in popularity, as well as in the number of colleges and students participating every year. It is an annual competition conducted by Baja across the US and around the world including India, Brazil, South Africa and Korea. BAJA SAE INDIA is an inter-collegiate design competition for undergraduate engineering students. It challenges and pushes the participating students and colleges to simulate real-world engineering design projects and their related challenges. It pools undergraduate students of mechanical and automobile engineering across the country to design and manufacture an all-terrain vehicle on their own and compete with one another on the arduous track at Pithampur, Madhya Pradesh. The competition started in India in December 2007 at Pithampur, near Indore (M.P.). BAJA SAE INDIA is conducted at NATRAX – National Automobile Test Tracks, NATRIP in Pithampur where a specially designed four kilometer track, puts to tests the vehicle designs of the participating students. The objective of the competition is to design and build a rugged single seat, recreational four-wheel off-road vehicle. Teams compete to have their design accepted for manufacture by a fictitious firm. Students must function as a team not only to design, build, test, promote and race a vehicle within the limits of the rules, but also to generate financial support for the project, as well as manage their academic priorities at their respective colleges. THE JOURNEY OF ZIBA RACERS Armed with will power, a team of 14 girl students from Shri Vishnu Engineering College for Women competed with 395 teams across the country to CHALLENGE THEIR CALIBRE. SVECW Women's team 'ZIBA RACERS' were the only girl team from south India to participate in BAJA and compete with other teams in ENDURANCE test of their vehicle. Their ideology is evident from the name of the team itself. 'ZIBA' means 'BEAUTY WITH STRENGTH'. The event was divided into two stages: The first stage was held in July, the Virtual round, in which about 153 teams were shortlisted on the basis of their technical design and their knowledge of the design and development stages of the project. The second stage was the Main event which was held in February at the National Automotive Testing and R&D Infrastructure Project (NATRIP) facility in Pithampur near Indore, Madhya Pradesh, assessed the durability and drivability of the actual vehicle, assembled as per the design presented in the virtual round. It comprised of Static and Dynamic Events. During Static events, the participating students had to describe in detail the methods used in designing the car, including all its sub-systems from Chassis to Steering as well as Engine Power Train to the Safety features. The Dynamic Events involved dynamic tests such as acceleration, suspension or traction, hill climbing, maneuverability and many more. Points were awarded based on the performance of the vehicles. These points were also taken as the starting order of events for the Endurance Race. The support from the management in providing tools, equipment, or finance provided the members of TEAM ZIBA RACERS with a one-of-a-kind opportunity to test their skills against students from around the world and grow into realtime engineers. The motto “you name it ,we have it ” has inspired the SVECW girls to dream more ,learn more , do more and become more. Let’s Make in India be a reality, but not a slogan.
