ANA-<strong>Michigan</strong> Member Highlight<br />

Over the past several years, Tenet Health<br />

recognize and honors colleagues from all their<br />

hospitals, outpatient centers and other facilities.<br />

<strong>The</strong>y call these colleagues Tenet Heroes —<br />

<strong>in</strong>dividuals who have done extraord<strong>in</strong>ary th<strong>in</strong>gs<br />

for patients, for their coworkers, our facilities and<br />

our communities. <strong>The</strong> Tenet Hall <strong>of</strong> Fame is the<br />

highest honor <strong>of</strong> these awards.<br />

This year’s Detroit Medical Center <strong>in</strong>ductee to<br />

the Tenet Hall <strong>of</strong> Fame was Bridget A. Leonard,<br />

DNP, Director <strong>of</strong> Patient Care Services, <strong>Nurs<strong>in</strong>g</strong><br />

Office Operations at RIM.<br />

Dr. Leonard was selected from more than 130<br />

employees for be<strong>in</strong>g a tireless advocate for those<br />

liv<strong>in</strong>g with System Lupus Erythematosus (SLE),<br />

s<strong>in</strong>ce the diagnosis that both she and her daughter<br />

have the disease.<br />

Dr. Leonard is currently serv<strong>in</strong>g as Record<strong>in</strong>g<br />

was awarded an honorary<br />

doctor <strong>of</strong> laws degree dur<strong>in</strong>g<br />

Wayne State commencement<br />

ceremony on May 5, <strong>2016</strong>.<br />

Feetham is a nationally and<br />

<strong>in</strong>ternationally recognized<br />

leader and academic who has<br />

affected significant change to<br />

<strong>in</strong>crease health equity for diverse populations. She<br />

has advanced family and nurs<strong>in</strong>g science through<br />

her leadership roles <strong>in</strong> academia, health systems<br />

and the federal government.<br />

With more than 50 years <strong>of</strong> experience,<br />

Feetham’s family and nurs<strong>in</strong>g research, teach<strong>in</strong>g<br />

and policy has cemented the important role<br />

<strong>of</strong> nurses <strong>in</strong> the care outcomes <strong>of</strong> children and<br />

adolescents and their families.<br />

While a Wayne State nurs<strong>in</strong>g faculty<br />

member <strong>in</strong> 1977, she developed the Feetham<br />

Family Function<strong>in</strong>g Survey, which assesses the<br />

relationships and strengths <strong>of</strong> families beyond the<br />

mother-father role. <strong>The</strong> <strong>in</strong>strument cont<strong>in</strong>ues to<br />

be used across discipl<strong>in</strong>es and has been translated<br />

<strong>in</strong>to eight languages.<br />

Also <strong>in</strong> the 1970s, Feetham identified the<br />

significance <strong>of</strong> family response to learn<strong>in</strong>g genetic<br />

<strong>in</strong>formation. This discovery led her to advocate<br />

for the <strong>in</strong>tegration <strong>of</strong> genetics and genomics <strong>in</strong><br />

education, practice and policy.<br />

She has received numerous awards, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g<br />

be<strong>in</strong>g designated a Liv<strong>in</strong>g Legend by the American<br />

Academy <strong>of</strong> <strong>Nurs<strong>in</strong>g</strong> <strong>in</strong> 2011, and has authored<br />

landmark publications <strong>in</strong> research <strong>of</strong> urban<br />

families, genetics and genomics to <strong>in</strong>form policy to<br />

advance the health <strong>of</strong> the public.<br />
