Solutions By Shasta D. May
INTERESTING
THINGS TO KNOW
IRS –
Misclassified Workers Remains a Priority
The Internal Revenue Service knows that a
large number of businesses circumvent their
payroll tax responsibilities by calling workers
independent contractors when they are in actuality
employees. So the IRS will increase its
efforts to seek back payroll taxes and penalties
from businesses that wrongly treat workers as
contractors. The Labor Department and states
are also involved in finding misclassifications,
and they are sharing their audit results with the
IRS.
Many businesses can come forward and correct
misclassifications errors. Businesses that
have consistently treated workers as contractors
and given 1099’s can come to the IRS, pay a
modest fine and receive audit protection for
earlier years. However, the company must agree
to treat workers as employees in the future.
Cell Service – About to get Better Soon
Improved indoor cell antennas can attach to
existing Wi-Fi hubs to enhance cell coverage in
big offices, stadiums, hospitals and other large
buildings where service gets sketchy.
Tech – Businesses to Start Investing in
Lighting-Fast Wi-Fi Equipment this Year
New wireless Internet products tap a little
used portion of the airwaves to transmit data at
multiple gigabits per second, 100 times as fast
as current rates. These fast connections will let
offices do away with cables to connect computers,
TV monitors and projectors for streaming
video, and download huge files in seconds.
The move to faster Wi-Fi will be a boon for
hardware manufacturers, both firms involved in
the tech itself, such as Intel and Qualcomm and
PC builders, such as Dell and Asus, since users
will require new computers to access the higher
speeds.
Sports Advertising – Pro Basketball Players
will soon be Sporting Ads on their Jerseys
Starting with the 2017-2018 season, teams in
the National Basketball Assoc. will sell a small
portion worth of ad space on the upper left
shoulder of game jerseys. The NBA anticipates
making about $100 million per year selling
space on jerseys. Other sports leagues are sure
to follow.
Travel – Less Expensive Transatlantic Flights
are on the Horizon
The Department of Transportation will approve
Norwegian Air International’s bid for low
cost flights across the Atlantic. Flights from
Boston to Cork, Ireland could begin as early
as August. By 2017, flights from New York to
Solutions
Cork will take off, followed by a rapid expansion
of many nonstop flights between Europe
and the U.S. Norwegian will use its fleet of fuel
efficient Boeing 787 Dreamliners to keep costs
low. U.S. Carriers and their alliance partners
have long dominated the lucrative transatlantic
market, and their opposition has held up Norwegian’s
federal approval. Other low cost carriers
will enter the market after Norwegian has some
success.
Home Loans – Older Homeowners are Expected
to use Reverse Mortgages for Retirement
New safeguards make the option more attractive
to homeowners 62 or older and have
financial planners more willing to recommend
the option to retirees. Reverse mortgages allow
homeowners to tap into some of the equity in
their homes. Repayment isn’t required until the
owner sells or dies, as long as real estate taxes
and homeowners insurance premiums are kept
up to date.
ATRI Study On
Sleep Apnea
Reports Significant
Driver Costs
The American Transportation Research
Institute (ATRI) released the results of its
sleep apnea survey, which highlights a number
of issues related to truck driver screening
and treatment of Obstructive Sleep Apnea
(OSA).
With data from more than 800 commercial
drivers, ATRI’s report is the first
to quantify the costs and other impacts that
truck drivers are experiencing as they address
diagnosis and potential treatment regimen for
OSA, stated an ATRI news release.
Included in the findings are that:
• Among drivers who had been referred
to a sleep study, 53 percent paid some or all
of the test costs, with an average of $1,220
in out-of-pocket expenses, representing just
over 1.5 weeks of median driver pay at $805
per week.
• Health insurance assistance with sleep
study costs impacted driver out-of-pocket
costs significantly as 61 percent of drivers
with no healthcare coverage of their sleep
study incurred out-of-pocket costs exceeding
$1,000 compared to 32 percent of drivers
whose health insurance did cover some portion
of the sleep study with costs exceeding
$1,000.
• Among drivers reporting time away
from work associated with sleep apnea
screening, 41 percent indicated days off ranging
from one to 30 days.
• Use of a Continuous Positive Airway
Pressure (CPAP) machine was the most commonly
prescribed treatment regimen for drivers
diagnosed with sleep apnea. This includes
drivers in the ATRI sample diagnosed with
mild sleep apnea, a condition that does not
require treatment for medical certification.
• The number of drivers who report not
adhering to a prescribed OSA treatment was
only 1.95 percent of the moderate/severe
OSA diagnosed respondents.
• Driver-perceived treatment efficacy
varied by OSA severity. As OSA diagnosis
severity increased, drivers experienced more
positive CPAP treatment effects. For example,
drivers diagnosed with severe OSA and
being treated with CPAP reported increased
amounts of sleep (84 percent), feeling better
when they wake up (71 percent) and lower
blood pressure (75 percent).
Independent Contractor
NEWS
• Conversely,
among the 91 percent
of drivers being
treated with CPAP —
despite a diagnosis of
mild sleep apnea —
less than a third (32
percent) experienced
improved sleep as a
result of CPAP treatment.
• Among drivers
who have had sleep studies and those who
have not, there is concern about the use of
neck circumference and Body Mass Index
(BMI) as measures to refer drivers to sleep
studies. Additionally, among drivers who
have been tested, 64 percent believe that the
Department of Transportation guidelines for
referring drivers are too broad and that medical
examiners do not
follow the guidelines
for referrals to sleep
studies.
“ATRI’s research
clearly shows what
my fellow drivers
and I have been
experiencing. The
costs associated with
sleep apnea screening
and treatment are not
inconsequential for drivers and the flexibility
to utilize lower-cost options for both screening
and treatment will be critical if Federal
Motor Carrier Safety Administration moves
forward with a formal rulemaking,” said
Barbara Beal, an owner-operator and member
of the Owner-Operator Independent Drivers
Association.
Bendix Reman
Brake Shoe
Production Reaches
Over 4 Million Units
In less than four years, Bendix Commercial
Vehicle Systems’ remanufactured brake
shoe operation has topped the 4-million-unit
production milestone.
Bendix’s rate of production has steadily
increased to meet growing demand from
fleets and owner-operators wishing to maintain
the quality, performance, and compliance
of their Reduced Stopping Distance (RSD)
brakes when replacing shoes, while optimizing
value, stated a Bendix news release.
Bendix, the North American leader in
the development and manufacture of active
safety and braking solutions for commercial
vehicles, began serial production of reman
brake shoes at its 74,000-square-foot
Huntington, Indiana, facility in the fall of
2012. The facility handles the complete
Doonan Introduces A New Specialty
Coil Hauler Trailer
Doonan Specialized Trailer, a manufacturer
of platform trailers, including custom
flatbeds, drop-decks, oilfield trailers, extendibles,
RGN low-beds and double drops, have
designed and constructed a new specialty coil
hauler trailer.
The new custom 48-foot by 96-inch
Black Gold Coil Hauler trailer was developed
Designed with two outer perimeter beams
with 1-inch by 5-inch top and bottom flanges,
the new Doonan manufactured trailer features
a well opening in the center that measures
19-feet long by 76-inches wide with recessed
concave beams to safely secure the coil load.
“Coils are generally some of the toughest
types of freight to haul because of their
concentrated weight in one small area on
specifically for hauling steel coils shotgun
style (where the eye of the coil is facing
forward), recessed inside a well, for the reason
that coils can “pack a punch” if they get
loose, according to Mike Gordy, co-manager
of operations at Doonan.
the trailer,” Gordy said. “One of the many
advantages of Doonan’s trailer design is that
Doonan has engineered the coil well closer
to the axles in order to transfer more weight
onto the trailer axles.”
PRODUCT
PROFILE
Coils can
range in size from
something relatively
small like 5,000
pounds to over
60,000 pounds. The
new flatbed coil
hauler trailer’s Gross
Vehicle Weight
Rating (GVWR) is
98,000 pounds. The
GVWR is based on
a tri-axle trailer with
disc brakes.
The trailer is also designed to have a tarp
system installed, so the coils are protected
from the elements and arrive at their destination
safe and sound. Nine custom pockets
were installed along
the sides of the
trailer for this application.
“We couldn’t
be more pleased
with the design and
weight this trailer
can hold,” Gordy
said. “This new specialty
trailer demonstrates
our commitment
and focus on taking our products to
the next level, and providing customers with
innovative solutions that lead the industry.”
