Workshops Presented by the Yavapai College Film & Media Arts Program All workshops are free and will be held in building 3, room 119 Film Preservation Monday, July 18, 5:00 – 6:00 pm Presenter: Bob O’Neil In the history of motion picture cinema and television there have been many challenges in preserving and restoring titles from the past (film) as well as the future (digital). Technical issues like obsolete formats and deteriorating media are part of the obstacles in working with an old library. Bob O’Neil takes us on a journey through the film vaults and the fascinating process that results in the preservation of our film heritage. Bob O’Neil worked at Universal Studios for nearly 40 years, retired, and recently moved to Prescott. He spent the final 25 years of his career doing analogue film preservation, restoration, and asset management on such titles as Dracula, Bride of Frankenstein, All Quiet On the Western Front, To Kill A Mockingbird, Double Indemnity, Psycho, and Rear Window. Planting the Seed of your Film: Writing an Effective Log Line Tuesday, July 19, 3:30 – 4:30 pm Presenter: Jeff Wood A clear, concise, and compelling log line is to your completed story what the seed is to a mighty tree: It contains the potential and the necessary information to grow straight, tall, and tower above the rest. In this hands-on workshop, we will discuss what a log line is (and isn’t), what the essential elements are, and how to craft one of your own. No experience is required. Participants will leave the seminar with one log line with a story begging to be written from it! Jeff Wood is the Screenwriting Instructor for the Film and Media Arts program at Yavapai College. Micro and Macro Film Financing Tuesday, July 19, 5:00 – 6:00 pm Presenter: Larry Sakin Larry will explore the sublime outlets and dirty secrets for funding your project. Larry believes, “Financing is among the greatest challenges facing filmmakers today. In an uncertain economy that stymies masters of the craft, how do innovative filmmakers find the money to complete their vision?” Larry Sakin has been in the entertainment industry for thirty-six years. Most recently, he was the Executive Producer for the internationally acclaimed documentary Being George Clooney, and is serving as Executive Producer for a documentary on global climate change. 4
The Sound of Fear Wednesday, July 20, 1:00 – 2:00 pm Presenter: Noah Blough Ever turned off the sound and watched a horror movie? Not so scary anymore is it? Noah Blough, Emmy nominated sound editor, is the person who made you jump during The Exorcist, fear for the survival of the planet in Independence Day, and hold your breath during Mission Impossible II. (Mr. Blough was also the Assistant Sound Editor for Purple Rain.) Join us as we take a filmatic tour through sound editing, design and Foley and find out how audio takes us on an emotional ride at the movies. Noah Blough has over 30 years experience in the film industry. His feature sound work includes Field of Dreams, Stargate, Independence Day, Black Hawk Down, MI2 and many more. Working in the Real World Thursday, July 21, 1:00 – 2:00 pm Presenters: Kim Kapin & Bryan Matsukey Radio Silence — DIY Independent Filmmaking & Marketing Wednesday, July 20, 2:30 – 3:30 pm Presenters: Tyler Gillett and Chad Villella Finding gainful employment in Hollywood has long been the ultimate goal for many aspiring filmmakers and television producers. In this workshop, veteran producers Bryan Matuskey and Kim Kapin will share their experiences working in the mainstream as well as offering tips on how aspiring content-makers can carve out a creative and profitable niche for themselves in exciting new areas. Kapin is currently the marketing and communications director at Yavapai College, but is also a veteran writer, director and producer. Bryan Matuskey is an Arizona filmmaker, photographer, and music composer. Radio Silence will answer your questions about DIY and Independent filmmaking and marketing. The directors of V/H/S, Devil’s Due and Southbound will talk about their unique approach to filmmaking, getting a project financed a hopefully viral way. RADIO SILENCE is a team of three filmmakers: Matt Bettinelli-Olpin, Tyler Gillett and Chad Villella. Radio Silence has made two independent feature films (V/H/S and Southbound) that have screened at numerous film festivals, including Sundance, TIFF, SXSW, AFI, Sitges, Fantastic Fest, and NY’s Lincoln Center.
