Since 2012 Hajnalka Szilaj is an art teacher
at the Andrew Jelky Secondary Vocational
School’s College of Arts.

“When I think of my work, I don’t see only a work
of art, but the creative process as well. Feelings,
memories swirl in my mind, sometimes very difficult
to process, sometimes sickeningly sweet, all soaked
in the nectar of bliss.
For a long time I thought that I was working
the material, but I came to realize that the material
forms me, it shapes and burnishes me. It invited me
to a serious cooperation, to a dance, which can only
be danced by merging together, and if there is no
merger, it remains only an empty substitute activity,
where neither I, or the environment, is affected.
Everything we do or create, classifies us, it paints
of picture of us the way we really are. The material
is not lying. If we don’t look after it, if we don’t
cherish it, it will take revenge.
For our negligence we are the only ones to blame.
However, the proper care brings its rewards in its
ancient quality, of how it serves faithfully, doesn’t
crack, doesn’t break. We need to love what we do,
whether is on a huge scale or just a scribble on
a piece of paper.
We could chant about what and how is worth doing
for page on end, but perhaps the most important is
creativity in itself. My main point is for my work
to be thought provoking, to offend if needed, to evoke
feelings and emotions.”
