AND CHEMISTRY
Student-athletes come to Mac to be challenged academically and
participate in a highly competitive program that values individuals.
Our program provides a positive environment that inspires players
to work hard. Our goals are to lead the conference and qualify for
the NCAA Division III Tournament. Coach Michele Cornish and her
staff are invested in each member of the team, working to instill
in athletes self-confidence that enhances and shapes their overall
college experience. The athletes in the program are a cohesive unit
on the field—and friends and scholars off the field.

Named Macalester head coach in 2012
Coached at Division I University of North Carolina–Asheville for
16 seasons. She accumulated 134 wins, making her the all-time
winningest coach in program and Big South Conference history
Won two Big South championships and was named Big South
Conference Coach of the Year twice
Won the 1985 Division I National Championship as a player at
George Mason University
Selected to the first U.S. representative women’s soccer team to play
in China and was the team’s youngest player and leading scorer

Previously Assistant Coach for University of California-Irvine’s Club
Played for the Orange County Blue Star CSL Premier and PDL teams

Not many people get paid to play soccer,
but Georgia Cloepfil ’14 holds the distinction.
A few months after graduation, she
was playing on a professional team in
Australia.
A soccer player since age four, Cloepfil
credits her experience at Macalester for
continuing to affirm her love of the game.
She avoided the burnout that many of her
friends experienced at other schools. “I
continue to play because I still love it, and
I still love it because I had such a great time
at Macalester,” Cloepfil said.
Cloepfil ranks sixth all-time in Macalester
history in both career goals (39) and
career assists (24). In her senior season,
Cloepfil earned her second Team MVP
award and led the Minnesota Intercollegiate
Athletic Conference (MIAC) in scoring
for her second consecutive season. She was
also named the MIAC Player of the Year
and an All-American.
Cloepfil considered attending Division I
schools Penn and Brown, but when she
visited Mac “everything just felt right.”
An English major, she studied abroad in
Nepal, interned with a publishing company
in St. Paul, and created a literary publication
at Macalester.

She currently plays professionally with the
Swedish Women’s Soccer League, and
hopes to eventually attend graduate school
and pursue a career in creative writing.
