CULTURE. КУЛЬТУРА
viewing Montparnasse, is Deslaw’s presenting the art
works of fellow Ukrainian émigré, Sasha Zaliouk on
sale in the market, along with other artists. Currently
few, know of Sasha Zaliouk as well, which is another
tale to be told.
However, in the 1950s, the Ukrainian right wing
press launched a smear campaign against Deslaw.
His disagreement with and distrust of the Ukrainian
émigré establishment, lead to his further exile from
mainstream Ukrainian life. As Deslaw belonged to
the Petliura camp, the right wing and left wing as well,
were not about to praise someone who disagreed with
them.
One project, Deslaw never completed was his history
of Ukrainian Western European relations. Because
of his reputation, he was able to gain access
to private libraries, archives where he searched out
Ukrainian/ Western European interactions from the
earliest days until the 20th century. It seems that he
amassed a great deal of historical information and
trivia. Also because of his contacts with the Petliura
camp, he collected documents, including military
strategy maps from former Petliura officers living in
Western Europe. Unfortunately following his death
in 1966, this material seems to have been dispersed
and lost.
Fifty years after Deslaw’s death, we should celebrate his
accomplishments, because though he was not making big
blockbuster films, he was an original in the Ukrainian and
European film industry, and represented Ukrainians very well.
Unfortunately, much of his material is lost probably
forever. Thus film buffs should go find Montparnasse,
and view it, enjoying the wonderful 1920s
jazzy sound track. Unfortunately, the film does not
list who is playing on the soundtrack. For more information
on Deslaw, please refer to my old article
from the 1980s in the Journal of Ukrainian Studies,
incomplete as it is, or Hosejko’s recent article http://
www.dokrevue.cz/en/tp-clanky/translucent-being-eug%C3%A8ne-deslaw.
This very good article
by Lubomir Hosejko hopefully may be a sign more
people are becoming interested in Deslaw.
