Students will still have to successfully complete certification in the co-requisite Virginia Hazardous Materials Operations before their Firefighter Level I certification will be granted. 3 Fire Science Technology (FST) elective can be selected from the following direct delivery FST college courses for 3 credit hours each. The FST electives that are recommended by the Department of Homeland Security’s National Fire Academy as higher education options are delivered in either secondary or post-secondary institutions. The four direct delivery classes are FST 100, FST 115, FST 121, and FST 220. These four (4) FST class options are core courses in the national Fire and Emergency Services Higher Education (FESHE) curriculum. Students have the option of substituting three (3) FST elective choices for nine (9) credit hours in place of FST 195, 196, and 295 if they prefer to take all direct delivery FST degree based classes.
