AST 107 Editing/Proofreading Skills (3 Cr)<br />

Develops skills essential to creating and editing business<br />

documents. Covers grammar, spelling, diction,<br />

punctuation, capitalization, and other usage problems.<br />

Lecture 3 hours per week. College reading and writing<br />

competence required.<br />

AST 114 Keyboarding for Information Processing<br />

<br />

(1-2 Cr)<br />

Teaches the alphabetic and numeric keys: develops correct<br />

techniques and competency in the use of computer<br />

keyboards. May include basic correspondence and report<br />

formats. Lecture 1-2 hours per week. College reading<br />

or enrollment in developmental English required.<br />

AST 141 Word Processing I<br />

(3 Cr)<br />

Teaches creating and editing documents, including line<br />

and page layouts, columns, fonts, search/replace, cut/<br />

paste, spell/thesaurus, and advanced editing and formatting<br />

features of word processing software. Prerequisite<br />

AST 101 or equivalent. Lecture 3-4 hours per week.<br />

College reading and writing competence required.<br />

AST 144 Word Processing I Laboratory (Specify Software)<br />

(1 Cr)<br />

Provides supplemental instruction in AST 141. Should<br />

be taken concurrently with AST 141, in appropriate curricula,<br />

as identified by the college. Laboratory 2 hours<br />

per week.<br />

AST 205 Business Communications (3 Cr)<br />

Teaches techniques of oral and written communications.<br />

Emphasizes writing and presenting business-related<br />

materials. Lecture 3 hours per week. College reading<br />

and writing competence required.<br />

AST 234 Records and Database Management(3-4 Cr)<br />

Teaches filing and records management procedures<br />

using microcomputer database software. Incorporates<br />

both manual and electronic methods for managing information.<br />

Lecture 3-4 hours per week. Prerequisites:<br />

demonstrated proficiency on the placement examination<br />

or successful completion of ENF 1 or ENF 2<br />

AST 236 Integrated Software Applications (Specify<br />

Software)<br />

(3 Cr)<br />

Teaches specialized integrated software application on<br />

the microcomputer. Emphasizes document production<br />

to meet business and industry standards. Prerequisite<br />

AST 101 or equivalent. Lecture 2-4 hours per week.<br />

Competency in Microsoft Word required.<br />

AST 242 Medical Insurance and Coding (3 Cr)<br />

Teaches coding for medical services rendered within a<br />

medical office setting utilizing current coding books for<br />

maximum reimbursement. Lecture 3 hours per week.<br />

AST 243 Office Administration I<br />

(3 Cr)<br />

Develops an understanding of the administrative support<br />

role and the skills necessary to provide organizational<br />

and technical support in a contemporary office<br />

setting. Emphasizes the development of critical-thinking,<br />

problem-solving, and job performance skills in a<br />

business office environment. Prerequisite AST 101. Lecture<br />

3 hours per week. College reading and Microsoft<br />

Word competency required.<br />

AST 244 Office Administration II<br />

(3 Cr)<br />

Enhances skills necessary to provide organizational and<br />

technical support in a contemporary office setting. Emphasizes<br />

administrative and supervisory role of the office<br />

professional. Includes travel and meeting planning,<br />

office budgeting and financial procedures, international<br />

issues, and career development. Prerequisite AST 243 or<br />

equivalent. Lecture 3 hours per week. College reading<br />

competence required.<br />

AST 245 Medical Machine Transcription (2-4 Cr)<br />

Develops machine transcription skills, integrating operation<br />

of transcribing equipment with understanding of<br />

medical terminology. Emphasizes dictation techniques<br />

and accurate transcription of medical documents in<br />

prescribed formats. Prerequisite AST 102 or equivalent.<br />

A laboratory co-requisite (AST 246) may be required.<br />

Lecture 2-4 hours per week. College reading and writing<br />

competency required.<br />

AST 247 Legal Machine Transcription (3 cr.)<br />

Develops machine transcription skills, integrating operation<br />

of transcribing equipment with understanding of<br />

legal terminology. Emphasizes dictation techniques and<br />

accurate transcription of legal documents in prescribed<br />

formats. A laboratory co-requisite (AST 248) may be required.<br />

Prerequisite AST 102 or equivalent. Lecture 2-4<br />

hours per week.<br />

AST 271 Medical Office Procedures I (3 Cr)<br />

Covers medical office procedures, records management,<br />

preparation of medical reports, and other medical documents.<br />

Co-requisite AST 102 or equivalent. Lecture 3<br />

hours per week. College reading and writing competency<br />

required.<br />

AST 298 Seminar and Projects<br />

(3 Cr)<br />

Requires completion of a project or research report
