Gardening tips for early-mid Autumn
by Phoenix Gardening
We’re just getting into autumn and let’s think about spring.
What to do? We can plant spring flowering bulbs now and
also sow hardy annuals, to overwinter if you’re in one of
the milder areas, if not provide some winter protection. Lift
onions to store and also lift and store main crop potatoes.
It’s also time to clean off any summer shading washes in
the greenhouse to maximise light as the days get shorter. If
you have a greenhouse heater check that it’s working. You
can also plant some hyacinth bulbs under glass for early
flowering. It’s also a good time to plant lilies for summer
too.
Moving into Mid – Autumn time to pay some attention
to the lawn giving it some autumnal lawn care treatment.
Prune back blackcurrant, gooseberry and summer fruiting
raspberries. If you have heavy soils it’s a good time to start
winter digging before it gets too wet and let the frosts help
break up the soil. You can always lay some well - rotted
horse manure on the top to break down over winter too,
acting both as a feed and a mulch. If you like herbs you
can always pot some up and keep them on a windowsill for
winter use. It’s also a good time to plant herbaceous plants
and divide up any over large ones you may have.
“ Be safe with a stairlift;
the perfect solution to your
problems with the stairs.”
