MIKE RAXWORTHY
There’s a whole lot going on in HASTINGS this September
and October - so much that I’ve had to leave Eastbourne
out this time!
On Friday September 16th, Saturday 17th and Sunday
18th you’ll find the Seafood and Wine Festival on the
Stade in Hastings Old Town. Apart from stands selling
local caught fish dishes and English wines, you’ll find a
big marquee on the beach next to the Lifeboat Station
which houses with a big bar selling real ales plus some really
great live bands!
Friday evening (Sept 16th) is launch
party time - this year it’s Super-Ska
Night with two superb big Ska bands:
The 9 piece Mighty Sounds followed
by The 10 piece TWO TONES band.
Tickets are only £8 in advance,
available from Hastings Information
Centre in Aquila House on Hastings Seafront...and £10 on
the door. Doors open at 7pm.
with
Saturday 17th: The fest opens at 11am and live music
MIKE RAXWORTHY
kicks off in the marquee at 12 noon with all-girl rockers
Thee Jezabelles. There are 5 brilliant bands throughout
the afternoon until 7pm. Highlights to catch are the Sam
Calver Band at 3pm and Kat and Co at 4.30. Kat who’s
from Tennessee is the real deal. The Hot Detroits at 6pm
well worth waiting for too!
Purchase a £1 armband in advance from Hastings Tourist
Info office (£2 on the door) and you’ll get total access
to the Festival site and Entertainment Marquee over the
TWO AFTERNOONS to see nine live bands, as well as stuff
for kids to do. Under 18’s free!
Sunday 18th: The Jazz Breakfast - early birds can enjoy
Liane Carroll and friends from 9.30am until 12 noon.
Tickets are £15 (under 18’s £10) which includes Orange
Juice, Tea or Coffee and a plate of savoury and sweet
pastries. It’s very special and always a sell out - so book
asap.
Armband people can then enter the marquee from 12.30
to see a great afternoon of 4 more live bands until 7.30pm.
Check out The Salts at 1.15 and The Hi-Fi Sneakers at 4.15.
Blues Brothers and Soul Sisters finish the festival with a 90
minute show starting at 6pm.
In Rye, the Rye Arts Festival runs from 17th September
to 1st October, don't miss The Jazz Supper at The Mermaid
on the 29th September, featuring David Silk & Friends
plus vocalist Liz Fletcher exploring the world of original
film scores. See the ad on page 3 for more details of the
festival.
Pub Stuff: The Jenny Lind in High Street, Old Town is always
on track with their live music, offering a really good mix
of local and out-of-town bands on Fridays from 8.30,
Saturdays (relatively new idea at 6pm - proving very
popular) and Sundays from 4pm. Highlights for me
over the next two months will be: Pocketsize on Sunday
September 25th at 4pm - Liz, lead vocals has a beautiful
voice, a great country music flavour
to her delivery. She actually once had
a hit in the USA and is well worth a
listen. Saturday 22 October at 6pm -
Justin and the Argonauts - a personal
favourite of mine - great musicians,
they never fail to entertain! If you like
funk - and lots of it - Mr Super Juice
could be your thing! Lack of lead vocals might sometimes
over-funk you though. See them on Saturday 29th October
at 6pm. Free entrance.
The Albion in George Street, Old Town offer something for
every musical taste! For some bands that are that little
bit special check out The Amazing Z Star Delta on Friday
October 7th - Mick Wigfall & the Toxics on Friday October
14th (from Marseilles) and Bruise on Friday 21st October.
Entrance is free on all these gigs!
The Royal Standard in Hastings Old Town has Soul X Press
at 9pm on Friday 21st October, a guaranteed free party
night!
The Stade Open Space in Hastings Old Town: October 15th
is Hastings Bonfire Day - and night. This year, the 950th
anniversary of the Battle of Hastings, will be super special.
Starting at 12 noon will be 3 local bands: 12 noon:
Slam...1.15: The Kytes....3.00 The Kavemen. There’s a lot
more too - including Guy making - drumming (no change
there then?) - community circus - Norman and Saxon
re-enactments - archery display - hog roast, mead and
cider tent. Get in the swing of it and come dressed as
Normans or Saxons!
open from 10am
