Bangor Police Department
Bangor Police Department has been 1 of the 60 Pennsylvania Municipal
Police Departments selected to participate in the
2016 Child Passenger Safety Enforcement Mobilization Grant.
Bangor, PA – As part of the National Child Passenger Safety Awareness Week,
which runs from September 18 through 24, the Bangor Police Department,
Buckle Up PA, and the PA Traffic Injury Prevention Project today announced they
will partner in an enforcement mobilization to help reduce child injuries and
fatalities.
The mobilization will take place from September 18 through 30, 2016, and
will also highlight National Seat Check Saturday September 24.
Vehicle crashes continue to be the leading cause of death for children.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration every 33
seconds, one child under 13 is involved in a crash. On average in 2014, nearly
two children under 13 years old were killed and 308 were injured every day as
passengers in car crashes. Theses crashes are a leading cause of death for
children in the United States.
Motorists are reminded that Pennsylvania’s primary seat-belt law requires
drivers and passengers under 18 years of age to buckle up, and children under
the age of 4 must be properly restrained in an approved child safety seat.
Children ages 4 to 8 must be restrained in an appropriate booster seat. A new
law that went into effect August 2016 requires a child under 2 years of age be
securely fastened in a rear-facing child passenger restraint system, which is to
be used until the child outgrows the maximum weight and limits designated by
the manufacturer. In addition, children ages 8 to 18 must be wearing a seat belt
when riding anywhere in the vehicle. Also, drivers and front-seat passengers
18 years-old or older are required to buckle up. If motorists are stopped for a
traffic violation and are not wearing their seat belt, they can receive a second
ticket and second fine.
Bangor Police will join other departments and highway safety partners across
the state to provide child passenger safety information, presentations, provide
fitting stations and, if necessary, write citations. Police will also us Traffic
Enforcement Zones, which combine enforcement patrol and checkpoint tactics
on roadways with high numbers of unbuckled crashes. Citations will be issued
to motorists who are caught transporting unrestrained children. For more
information on seat belt safety, visit www.penndot.gov/safety.
Child Safety Seat Inspection Station for zip code 18013, is located at Bangor
Police Department 30 North 1st Street, Bangor, PA. Serving the county of
Northampton; hours are by appointment, contact Officer Hunsicker at 610-599-
knew it was a project for me,” said Daniel.
The Grand Central Environmental Education Center has been working with
Troop 33 since 2006 on various habitat projects. These projects have led to five
boy scouts earning Eagle Scout status.
“We are very lucky to have such great community partners and scout troops
that want to get involved in our habitat project,” said Landfill Manager Scott
Perin.
“Their guidance and willingness to support the project has provided the project
with new insight and resources for the community,” continued Perin.
Although Daniel has a few more merit badges to earn before officially receiving
his Eagle Scout Badge, Daniel has completed his project ahead of schedule.
“We are very proud of the scouts that work with us and thankful for their help.
It’s great to see them learn something from the habitat as well,” said Community
Relations Manager Adrienne Fors.
The Grand Central Environmental Education Center is open to the public to
Tips For Your Wedding Day
1. Guest List -
Set an approximate number of guests you plan to invite before settling on a venue.
You will want to secure a venue that has ample space to comfortably accommodate
your guests. Rule of thumb is 25 to 30 square feet per guest. You must
take into consideration space for tables, bustling a band or DJ and a dance floor.
2. Trim the Guest List
The easiest way to trim your wedding budget is to cut down on your guest list. A
big portion of your wedding expenses goes toward the reception. Cut your wedding
costs by cutting down your guest list. Check and double check to see if there is
anyone you can omit from the guest list.
3. Stress Less
Take It One Step at a time by putting together a simple wedding plan. Do things
one by one in a logical planning order. Choose your date, next find and secure
a venue. Then start booking your florist, caterer, photographer, and band, Don't
forget the dress!
The Slate Quarry Mural and Hoist Dedication
The Slate Belt Community Partnership held a ceremony on Saturday, September 17th, to dedicate the “The Slate
Quarry” Mural and Hoist in downtown Bangor. The mural is painted on the Hometown Brand Center building
on First and Market Street. The mural depicts the slate workers and the hoist. Jim Gloria, Totts Gap Art Institute
Founder/Director along with a group of volunteer young artists spend countless hours working on the mural.
Two of the men who worked in the quarry are portrayed in the mural, Andrew Polo and Larry Altorfer, whom both
attended the dedication. The Hoist was
manufactured by S. Flory Maufacturing
Co. in Bangor in the early 1900’s, it
was used in the Jackson Slate Quarry
in Pen Argyl, it is 116 years old. It now
resides at it’s new home in Bethel Park
in Bangor thanks to project leader and
MAGNESIUM DEFICIENCY
By Jackie Talero-Rueda, The Crunchy Mom
I’ve written briefly about Magnesium in the past
and how it’s important for a healthy immune system.
Magnesium is needed for that and so much more.
This mineral is used by every organ in your body
including your heart, muscles, and kidneys. Most Magnesium is stored
in your bones and organs and about 1% is found in the blood. This
makes it nearly impossible to know if you are deficient by getting
blood work done. "Magnesium is involved in over 300 biochemical
reactions in your body. It affects everything from your heartbeat to
your muscles to your hormones. Studies have shown that only about
25% of U.S. adults are at or above the recommended daily amount
of 310 to 320 milligrams for women and 400 to 420 for men," says
Dr. Danine Fruge, Associate Medical Director at the Pritikin Longevity
Center in Miami, Florida. Magnesium is also found in more than
300 different enzymes in your body and plays a role in your body's
detoxification processes, making it important for helping to prevent
damage from environmental chemicals, heavy metals, and other
toxins. Early signs of Magnesium deficiency include loss of appetite,
headaches, nausea, fatigue, and weakness. An ongoing Magnesium
deficiency can lead to more serious symptoms, including: numbness
and tingling, muscle cramps, seizures, personality changes, abnormal
heart rhythms and coronary spasms (mercola.com). If you suffer
from leg cramps, insomnia, anxiety, high blood pressure, fatigue, and
migraine headaches like me, you could very likely have a Magnesium
deficiency. Since at least 75% of the population is deficient it is
even more likely that you are part of that statistic. My migraines
decreased a lot after my doctor told me to take high dose Magnesium
oxide that was intended for constipation. Were my headaches due
to the constipation or due to Magnesium deficiency? Or maybe the
Magnesium relaxes and allows my body to do it’s job. Or maybe the
detoxing effect helped. I am not sure but either way the Magnesium
improved my health. There are different types of Magnesium one
can take. Magnesium oxide and Magnesium citrate have a laxative
effect when taken in higher quantities. Magnesium oxide is used in
many colon cleansing products. Magnesium Glycinate is a chelated
form of Magnesium that usually provides better absorption and
bioavailability and is typically considered ideal for those who are
trying to correct a deficiency. Magnesium Threonate is an excellent
Magnesium for brain health as it is said to reach and cross the blood
brain barrier. Magnesium can also be absorbed through the skin by
using Magnesium oil, cream, or salt baths like epsom salt. Whatever
type of Magnesium you choose please remember to consult with your
physician first for appropriate dosing and type of Magnesium. Do your
research as there are many more types of Magnesiums that I didn’t
cover and you or your loved one could also
benefit from.
Kate Moretti – The Vanishing Game
By Kerri Tollinger
A funny thing happened on Facebook. I entered
a contest and won The Vanishing Year by Kate
Moretti. I was instructed to give my name and
address for the author to mail me my book. When
she replied that we were “neighbors”, I knew that
I wanted to let all my other “neighbors” in the
area know about this New York Times Best Selling
Author who was living in our backyard.
Moretti grew up in Martins Creek, which is the
setting for her character’s getaway home in her
newest novel The Vanishing Year, which is due to
be released on September 27th, 2016. Little clues
here and there capture the charm of the little town nestled on Route 611.
Moretti started her writing career while she was on maternity leave in 2010.
She claims to have had the most perfect baby who did nothing but sleep and
she was bored. No, this is not part of her fiction. Moretti said she always wanted
to write, and made a goal to just finish her book. She did, and had it published.
Thought I Knew You made it onto Bookbub.com and screamed to #2 on the
Amazon book list, and then eventually made it onto the New York Times Best
Sellers list.
Moretti’s books include: Thought I Knew You (2012), Binds That Tie (2014),
While You Were Gone (2015) and The Vanishing Year (2016). The Vanishing Year
is a suspenseful novel that is set in New York City centered on a woman with
a sketchy past who is living a dream life, or is she? The Vanishing Year can be
found at Moravian Book Store, Barnes and Noble and Amazon on September
27th, 2016. A Release Party is planned at Moravian Book Store on October
7th, 2016. Pre ordering books would be the best idea, to insure that there are
enough books. More information is available at Moretti’s Facebook site: Kate
Moretti – Author, and on her website, www.katemoretti.com.
The Vegetable Garden
Pull out old vines and vegetable plants. Insect pests that feed on these plants
during summer and fall often lay eggs on old plants. If vines are left on the
soil surface, insect eggs will survive the winter and hatch in spring. If they are
not diseased, you can work the old plants back into the garden soil. This adds
organic matter to the soil and destroys insects and their eggs. You can use
well-rotted manure, compost, peat or leaves to add to the soil in the fall. Rototill
all these materials into the soil, mixing well to a depth of 8 to 12 inches. You’ll
want to leave one part of the garden intact. The area where you’ve planted root
crops can be mulched instead of dug up and worked. These simple tips will help
in preparing your vegetable garden for the off-season.
24 ARTS & ENTERTAINMENT
Tea and Biscuits
by Lee O'Donovan
Please Stand Up For The National
Anthem!
I sit on a wet plank of metal called a 'bleacher' with my
wife and other parents watching our children perform
on the field. The kids are wearing black, green and
white uniforms. Some play musical instruments, others
are clutching poles with flags attached. We all wait for the weekly high school
football game to begin. My daughter is in the "silks" (My wife's term for the
flag-wavers in a marching band). The marching band, silks and cheerleaders
are part of the expected pomp and ceremony presented at football games.
This cultural phenomenon amazes, and befuddles me. Apparently, in America,
a sporting event requires more than just the two competing teams, in America
a sporting event includes cheerleaders, a marching band, a group that waves
flags in a pre-arranged pattern, and folks dressed in costumes representing
animals,(mascots).
In Britain, we go to a sporting event to watch... ..the sport. There are no
cheerleaders, bands playing brass instruments and drums marching across the
field, no waving flags, no teams of girls flying in the air performing terrifying
looking stunts and pyramids!
A British game is about the sport, and American games are about the pomp!
When I first watched an Iron Pigs baseball game I was bemused (puzzled) by
the people dressed as cuts of meat chasing each other around the pitch,(field)
and the weird looking creature riding the quad bike was downright ridiculous!
However, after a season of attending all the games of our local high school
football and feeling a swell of pride in seeing my daughter march around waving
her flag, I think I get it.
I do applaud and appreciate the time and effort that the football players and
cheerleaders put into their performance. I am invested more in the marching
band and silks because my daughter is a silk. I make no excuses for my being a
proud father!
My daughter does this so that she can stand on a field and represent her
school full of pride and I can't express enough how proud of her I am. The game
that I go to is about two competing teams playing football, but for me, the pomp
that surrounds the game is what makes this event American and fun!
When I go to a game and stand for the National Anthem I do so out of
respect for the country and because I respect the effort that America puts into
celebrating its sports.
God Bless America!
Find Your Way
Touchdown
by Robert L Martin
One last drive is all we got
When our battle ends, so well we fought
We arose from volcanoes through all the cracks
Strewing fire like swarming maniacs
How dare you put yourself in our path?
Those who do will suffer from our wrath
We can move together through molten walls
Hearts pounding with marauding rally calls
Our downhill ride is the two minute drill
Moving straight ahead while time stands still
With runs and passes, we move the chains
Trepidation sinks in while power reigns
They saw us coming, their confidence quivered
They fell down, our final blow was delivered
A play action pass clogged up the middle
We ran a post pattern, we solved the riddle
Football is not easy
We play to win
But they do too
