16 | October 6, 2016 | The Mokena Messenger News mokenamessenger.com FROM THE FRANKFORT STATION Mayor Jim Holland announces re-election bid at campaign fundraiser Frankfort Mayor Jim Holland announced his intention to run for re-election Sept. 27 during his Taste of Frankfort campaign fundraiser. The event, held at CD&ME in Frankfort, featured dozens of restaurants and had hundreds of attendees. Holland outlined some ongoing projects, as well as his continued vision for the Village during the event. “Our community is going in a great direction, and we have new road projects coming up on Steger Road and Saint Francis Road,” Holland said. “We have new buildings going in along Route 45, and some new commercial development. “But, as important as anything, what we are striving for in Frankfort all the time is quality. We have to keep on that path.” Holland said there were more vendors — 25 total restaurants — at the event than ever before. Attendees Tom and Judy Filippo said they enjoy coming to the event to see all their neighbors and friends, as well as to support the mayor. “There’s just a feeling you get when you come down here [to Frankfort] and you’re on the green and everybody you know is there,” Judy said. FROM THE TINLEY JUNCTION Tinley officer honored for work with the elderly Dina Navas is the Tinley Park Police Department’s civilian crime prevention officer, and it is her job to make sure the elderly of Tinley Park are well informed. Navas accepted the 2016 Illinois Elderly Service Officer of the Year award presented to her Sept. 21 at the TRIAD Conference in Champaign. Tinley Park Police Chief Steve Neubauer and Sgt. Darren Persha were in attendance during the 40-minute ceremony, which was held at the I Hotel and Conference Center. Neubauer and Persha made the four-hour roundtrip to celebrate all of the hard work Navas has done for those within the community they are sworn to protect. “What Dina does, there’s not really a template for it; it’s pretty unique,” Neubauer said. “She seeks out things and issues that no one covers.” Navas started her career working for the Village of Tinley Park back in 1991, before getting her current title in 2005. Navas’ work allows her to help those who would not know who to turn to in difficult situations. She works with five sworn officers to provide services to the elderly of Tinley. “She’s filling in the gaps,” Neubauer said. “Dina helps people find ways to resolve their problems and issues within the community.” Reporting by Brittany Kapa, Assistant Editor. FROM THE LOCKPORT LEGEND Illinois State Museum Lockport Gallery reopens One of the most culturally significant locations in Lockport’s historic downtown area has reopened its doors to the public. The Illinois State Museum Lockport Gallery was closed roughly one year ago because of State budget concerns, but it reopened Sept. 24 as part of the Summer Art Series festivities happening downtown that weekend. “Understanding that this regional location is available again was meaningful,” Lockport Mayor Steve Streit said. The ISM Lockport Gallery closed its doors at the end of September of this past year, when the State took over payments of the rent from the City of Lockport, after the City started paying them the month before, as previously reported by The Lockport Legend. Since then, the State has been in discussions with Streit and the City of Lockport, trying to come up Please see NFYN, 19 Police Reports Police: Mokena woman involved in vehicular crash drove after drinking Amanda Conley, 23, of 9512 Birch Ave. in Mokena, was charged with DUIalcohol, DUI-BAC over .08, driving with expired registration, failure to yield before turning left and accident: property damage. Police reportedly received a call and responded to Birch Avenue and LaGrange Road for a two-car collision. Upon arrival, police found a 2003 Ford Taurus allegedly driven by Conley facing west on Birch Avenue. Police reportedly observed “severe rear passenger side crush damage, with the rear passenger wheel and axle broken.” Police also reportedly observed a second vehicle with heavy front-end damage. The driver of the second vehicle reportedly told police that he was traveling north on LaGrange Road when the “Taurus turned left in front of him, failing to yield to his right of way,” causing the collision. When speaking with Conley, police said they noted that she was holding a cold bottle of water and was chewing gum, and that they could “immediately smell a very strong odor of an alcoholic beverage emitting from her breath.” Police reportedly also “observed here eyes were bloodshot and glassy.” When Conley asked for proof of insurance, police said the driver of the Taurus was “unsteady and she exhibited poor balance.” When Mokena Fire Protection District paramedics arrived on the scene, Conley allegedly refused transport to a hospital. Conley reportedly refused to take any sobriety tests, including a breath alcohol test, after which she was placed under arrest. Later, Conley’s blood alcohol sample produced a .274 blood alcohol content. Sept. 25 • Joseph Serczyk, 20, of 17933 School St. in Lansing, was charged Sept. 25 with driving on a revoked license and a traffic sign violation. Police reportedly observed a 2002 GMC Jimmy allegedly driven by Serczyk fail to stop at a stop sign 195th Street and Breckinridge Drive in Mokena. Police conducted a stop to later find that Serczyk reportedly had a revoked license. Sept. 22 • Melissa Moore, 50, of 10618 St. John Drive in Mo- Please see Police, 18 Mokena resident arrested following alleged theft of firearms from New Lenox home James Sanchez Contributing Editor Three people were arrested Friday, Sept. 30, after one allegedly took four guns from a New Lenox residence and Rudnicki sold them. Police arrested Brian Rudnicki, Trenton Felkamp and Gianna Davenport after an investigation that stemmed from a Sept. 24 report of firearms theft from a residence in the 2400 block of Jackson Branch Drive in New Lenox, according to a press release issued Sept. 30 by the New Lenox Police Department. Rudnicki, 20, of 19429 Foxford Lane in Mokena, was charged with aggravated possession of stolen firearm, unlawful use of a From Sept. 30 weapon by felon, possession of a stolen firearm and possession of firearm without a FOID. Felkamp, 18, of 7717 Jefferson Court in Frankfort, was charged with aggravated possession of stolen firearm, aggravated unlawful use of weapon and possession of a controlled substance. Davenport, 19, of 7717 Jefferson Court in Frankfort, was charged with aggravated possession of stolen firearm. The report stated Rudnicki was inside the residence, visiting with a friend who resided there, when he took two semi-automatic handguns and two revolvers from a safe. Rudnicki denied any involvement in the theft until detectives discovered evidence that revealed he had possession of the firearms at one time, police said. Rudnicki sold the guns to Felkamp, and Davenport assisted in the sale by driving Felkamp to make the purchase, according to police. Detectives were able to locate Felkamp and Davenport outside of their residence in Frankfort and take them into custody, police added. When Felkamp was taken into custody, detectives reportedly recovered one of the stolen firearms and found he was also in possession of a substance suspected to be ecstasy. Rudnicki reportedly was arrested Sept. 27. His bond was set at $250,000. Felkamp and Davenport were both arrested Sept. 30 and transported to Will County Adult Detention Facility pending bond hearings, according to police.
