Two major infrastructure
projects were formally approved
Sept. 26 at the Village
of Mokena Board of
Trustees meeting.
As part of its consent agenda,
trustees voted 6-0 to approve
site and development
plans for Accelerate Indoor
Speedway and Holiday Inn
Express.
Accelerate Indoor Speedway
is to be located at 8580
Spring Lake Drive, Lot 19 in
Corporate Corridors North,
while Holiday Inn Express
is to be located at 19220
Greenwich Drive.
For Accelerate Indoor
Speedway, trustees formally
approved site, landscape and
photometric plans for the
project, as well as light fixtures
and building elevations
with “a stipulation that additional
concrete pavers be installed
around the perimeter
of the southern landscape
paver area,” per the motion
by Village Administrator
John Tomasoski.
Trustees approved the site
and landscape plans for Holiday
Inn Express, as well as
the light fixture cut sheet and
building elevations.
Tomasoski said these were
the last steps in the development
process for the “two
substantial developments.”
“This is going to be approximately
6,400 square
feet,” he said of Accelerate
Indoor Speedway. “It is going
to be an indoor, electric
go-kart [facility] with a restaurant
and bar. It will be located
on Spring Lake Drive
next to Rasmussen College.

A brief recap of action from the Sept. 26 meeting of the
Mokena Village Board
• Trustees voted 6-0 to award a contract to D
Construction Inc. of Coal City for the parking lot
pavement projects at the Public Works garage and
the ESDA building. The contract was in the amount
of $73,568.65 – approximately 33 percent less than
what the Village Board budgeted for the project.
• Trustees also voted 6-0 to approve single-lot
annexations at 19934 Hillgate Road and 19944
Hillgate Road into the Village. The property owners
requested the emergency tap-on to the Village’s
sanitary system after a private septic system failure.

Tomasoski said Holiday
Inn Express will have 96
rooms and four floors.
“All said, it is going to
be a catalyst for development
on both corridors of
LaGrange [Road] and 191st
[Street], and the anchor of
our Meridian Centre going
forward, which is on the
southwest corner of [those
streets],” he said.
Tomasoski said both projects
are expected to break
ground this fall and be completed
sometime in 2017.
“I would like to briefly
mention the unsung heroes
… our plan commission
and [other] committees,”
Tomasoski said. “A lot of
hard work and effort goes to
this point. It will be the final
votes tonight, and I think
these are both substantial development
projects.”
Trustee John Mazzorana
said he agreed with Tomasoski
that these developments
would further develop
those corridors.
“We talk about the generation
of sales tax and so forth,
but these developments are
even better, because there is
a 5 percent amusement tax
on the raceway development
and then there is a 5 percent
hotel tax,” Mazzorana said.
“These generate a great deal
more revenue to the Village
than other types of development
that generate the 1
percent sales tax. When you
see a lot of hotels and a lot
of these types of businesses,
you’re looking at an area
that is doing very well. It’s
very encouraging to see these
types of developments.”
Mayor Frank Fleischer
also agreed.
“Not everybody is going
to have this type of raceway
facility, so this is going to
make Mokena a destination
for this type of activity,”
Fleischer said. “We’re
definitely looking forward to
you folks breaking ground.”
Fleischer also mentioned
that he heard from staff and
the business owner that projections
are that more than
100,000 first-year users would
be coming to the facility.
