Before coming to the NAWS Humane Society of Illinois, a police officer found tan-andwhite Pippi malnourished and wandering the streets of Chicago. “[The officer] knew that she would get euthanized if he brought her to another shelter, so he brought her to the Mokena NAWS,” said Maria Weber, bulk mail clerk at the Frankfort Post Office. “They think she has a ligament issue, and they’re hoping they can just splint it.” Pippi was one of four pups that greeted post office patrons at an adoption event that afternoon hosted by the post office and NAWS, located in Mokena. Inspired by similar events hosted by other community post offices, Weber reached out to NAWS to collaborate on a pet adoption event following the release of a new stamp series that features pets, she said. “The Aurora Post Office did an adoption event with The Humane Society [of the United States],” she said. “I wanted to do something similar so I asked our postmaster, and he was all for doing something for the community.” The United States Postal Service released the line of Pets Forever stamps, featuring 20 photographs of various pets from a hamster to a betta fish, this past August. She added that this was the first time the Frankfort Post Office had participated in an event of this nature. “This was a very unusual thing for the post office,” she said. “We don’t normally do anything like this.” With more than 50 community members stopping by to interact with the pups, the event also drew attention to the cause of NAWS. Angus, a 5-month-old shepherd-terrier mix, got a lead on an owner that afternoon, but NAWS manager Wendy Paul said that wasn’t the main goal. “We do a lot of outside events to give the animals exposure,” she said. “… The most important thing is that they get to interact at the events.” The Mokena NAWS offers a range of services including medical care, pet adoption, pet boarding, doggy day camp and pet grooming and spa services. All of the proceeds from the resale shop go toward supporting the animal rescue program, Paul said. Items can be dropped off at the post office at any time, Weber said. “We will take them for as long as they come in,” she said. “We can always have the carrier drop it off.” As of Sept. 18, all of the dogs who appeared at the event had been adopted except for Pippi, according to Stacy Gaskins, chairman of the board for NAWS.
