Enviro awards - St Christopher's
still number 1 in EC
Continued from Front Page...
Six regional champions in
each category made it to the
finals.
Speaking at the event, Hon
MEC Sakhumzi Somyo who
was represented by the managing
director of the department
Mr Albert Mfeyana said:
'The department is investing a
lot of money in this competition
because they know these
learners are the ones to proffer
solutions to the numerous
problems plaguing our planet
and it is imperative that they
get exposed at an early age'.
The themes for this year’s
competition were: Save the
Earth (Primary School)
and sustaining Our Economy
through Ecological Infrastructure
(High School).
The competition attracts prizes
ranging from five thousand
rand (R 5000) to
twenty thousand rand (R 20
000) at the regional level and
twenty five thousand rand
(R25 000) to one hundred
thousand rand (R 100 000)
at the provincial level.
The chairperson of the environmental
science committee
at St. Christopher Mr
Ernest Egbe said: 'Our
school has become more environmentally
friendly in the
past four years as we have a
lot of environmental science
projects'
'This competition is good for
all learners but preparing for
it requires a great
deal of hard work, dedication,
research and presentation
skills.
'I am proud of my learners
once again” he concluded.
Spanish-style fish stew
• 1 tbsp olive oil
• 1 onion, finely chopped
• 3 cloves garlic, crushed
• 2 sticks celery, finely sliced
• 1 bulb fennel, finely sliced
• ½ tsp chilli flakes
• 2 tsp mild Spanish paprika
• 1 litre salt-reduced fish or
chicken stock
• 2 x 400g tins chopped tomatoes
• 2 bay leaves
• 1 tsp sugar
• 800g mixed seafood, such
as white fish fillets, prawns,
mussels, scallops and calamari
• 1 tbsp lemon juice
• 3 tbsp chopped flat-leaf
parsley, plus extra leaves to
garnish
• Lemon wedges, to serve
Method
Heat the olive oil in a large
saucepan over medium heat
and saute the onion, garlic,
celery and fennel until soft
but not coloured. Stir in the
chilli and paprika and saute
for a further minute.
Add the stock, tomato, bay
leaves and sugar. Bring to
the boil, then reduce the heat
and simmer uncovered for 25
minutes. You can cool the
fish stew base at this stage
and freeze
until required. Otherwise, carry
on with the recipe.
Add the seafood to the pan
and gently submerge it in the
liquid. Cover and simmer for
five minutes until the fish is
just cooked. Gently stir in the
lemon juice and parsley and
season to taste. Garnish with
extra parsley leaves and
serve with lemon wedges.
AWARD TIME: King Lion Brian von der Decken receiving an award at the
Lions 410D conference held in Swellendam at the weekend
Peace Poster Contest – the
entries from our District were
on display for the delegates
to view, and the Lions
Snugglers – the sleeping
bags made from newspaper
and plastic, and a
presentation by Mr Marais
Steyn on organ and tissue
donation which was very
informative and inspiring, a
parade along the main street
in Swellendam received
waves and cheers from the
public, and there was plenty
of fellowship and fun at a
Meet ‘n Greet on the Friday
evening and a Theme
Evening on Saturday where
several Clubs performed skits
to the amusement of all
present.
Awards were presented to the
winners of the various District
Competitions and the KWT
Lions Club won the Top
Newsletter and Top Secretary
[Lion Francois de Villiers was
last year’s Club Secretary]
Awards as well the awards for
raiding other clubs and for
retention of members.
”It is hard work recruiting new
members,” Brian von der
Decken commented, “and
we do our best but it is of
perhaps greater importance
retaining those that we have
in the club because much of
the time spent of bringing in
new members is wasted if
they do not stay in the club.
'It is also very importance for
morale and for gaining new
ideas that clubs raid one
another although the cost of
travelling and the safety on
the roads makes this difficult.
We do have great fun, though,
when we go on raids.”
The KWT Lions Club is proud
of the service that its
members are able to perform
in our community, which is
largely thanks to the support
of the businesses and the
media and always
encourages service-minded
volunteers to join a service
club and to help to make a
difference in the lives of
those in need.

FRIDAY 7 OCTOBER 2016 THE BUGLE 5
SPCA Bikers Breakfast raises big bucks for King SPCA
DESPITE poor weather and
poor attendance at this
years Rotary SPCA Bikers
Breakfast held at the Dale
College rugby fields at the
weekend an impressive
amount of close to R26 000
was raised for the King SP-
CA.
This event takings were
matched by King Rotary to
make a handsome figure of
just short of R26 000, according
to SPCA chairperson Annette
Rademeyer.
A raffle draw added to the
coffers and several bikers
walked off with great prizes.
'We sold 70 breakfasts,' said
Annette adding that she was
not sure how many biker
attended – I didn’t count
them but I estimate maybe
20 – 30.
'We usually have 150 and
more. The weather played a
huge role,' Annette said.
The SPCA would like to thank
the KWT Rotary Club and
Anns for their hard work and
support on Sunday.
'Many of them would have
liked to stay warm under the
duvet I’m sure, but they
came out and worked to turn
it into a very successful
event,'she said.
'To the SPCA committee who
jumped in and helped and to
the bikers - you guys
rock...some of them (the
bikers) even arrived in their
cars instead of on their bikes
because of the rain but
DONORS: Members of the Skulls and Carbon after donating R5 000 to the
King SPCA at a Bikers Breakfast on Sunday
support they did,' said Annette.
She said the event was the
SPCA's biggest annual fundraiser.
'This year Rotary decided to
match what we raised... up
to the amount of R12
000...thank you so much to
the Rotary Club for your support.
'I am truly humbled by this
fantastic result - despite the
rain. But I am happy for the
rain too because we need
grass to grow for the animals
who have nothing to eat in
the veld so it was a win/ win
all round.'
One of the highlights of the
event was a cash donation
of R5 000 by motor bike
clubs Skull Wings MCC and
Carbon MC.
“We raised the money at an
event called the Iron Saddle
held in Winterstrand,' said
biker Shane Luck.
“We decided this year that we
would donate the proceeds
from the event to the King
SPCA,' he said.
'The reason they made the
donation to the SPCA is that
Shane’s dog was sick with
billiary some time ago and
he tried to get help for the
dog and no one would help
him.
'He drove all the way to King
to bring his dog to the SPCA
for treatment and was
helped immediately without
any demands being made
for money up front. His dog
survived the billiary and he
still has it today.
'He was struck by the compassion
showed towards his
dog and the willingness of
King SPCA staffers to assist
him when he desperately
needed help for his dog,'
said Annette.
The event was attended by
motorcyclists from Harley
Davidson, Ulysses, Tribal
Cats, Midnight, Motto Mecca,
Carbon, Skulls, Unforgiven
and Border Bastards.
The car of the event went to
a BMW i8 owned by Gordon
Nicholson of East London.
Miss SPCA this year was
Jenny Moss who collected
funds by “walking around
with an SPCA money box.'
“I am a strict vegetarian and
an SPCA volunteer worker...
I love animals,' she said.
Biker Geoff Willmers and his
wife Julie braved the weather
and 'came by car'“When
we left East London it was
pouring with rain so we decided
to come by car,' Geoff
explained.
'We wanted to support the
King SPCA and decided rather
than miss we would use
four wheels to make the
breakfast.'
The event also marked the
birthday of Rotary Ann Jenny
Heathcote.

Rotary organises eye tests for learners
THIRTEEN learners from
Schornville Primary school
had their eyes tested last
week as part of a Rotary drive.
The eye tests were done by
DM Optometrists at no cost.
Senior Elna Heuer also received
a set of bio-focals on
the day after she approached
Rotary.
“I am so happy about what
Rotary did for him. I can see
better and read now,' said
Elizabeth.
On the day twenty-five learners
were meant to have their
eyes tested but only 13 arrived
at school,' a school
spokesperson said.
“The balance will have there
eyes tested at a later date in
October,' said Rotary president
Dave Heathcote.
He said that every year Rotary
held a project which focused
on the youth as the
recipients and this year 'eye
month' was our deciding factor.
“We believe that both child
and parent need to be made
aware of any health or medical
conditions that need to be
treated in its early stages as
the youth are the future'
He said the eye testing went
off well and of the 13 learners
tested 4 needed spectacles
'and received them before
they left the premises.'
'There were children that
were unable to make it so
Dean has set aside the 28
October to examine them. He
has made arrangements with
teachers to bring them in for
the eye testing,' said Dave.
He added: 'This is great Free
service to the community and
Dean should be applauded.
Well done to also Peter and
Prittee Dhaya for all that they
did to make the testing possible
and for providing the kids
each with a party pack.
'I have given Dean Radue a
framed photo thanking him
and his staff and have also
arranged with The Bugle to
publish an article thanking
him,' said Dave.
One of the learners tested,
Grade 3 learner Athuke
Mkontwana said:' I have also
Kuselo to host My Hero Day
KUSELO Child and Youth
Care Centre will host their
annual My Hero Day to honor
those organisations who play
a valuable part in the daily
lives of vulnerable children
who are at risk or in crises.
The event takes place at
Kuselo in Quzini next
Wednesday starting promptly
at 10am.“On this day children
in our care will hand over
appreciation certificates
to special invited guests
from various organisations
and departments who have
made a valuable difference in
their lives,' said Amanda Coetzee,
a director at Kuselo.'It
is important to Kuselo CYCC
that children in our care who
are at risk or in crises to be
thankful and appreciative of
officials and persons who
have gone the extra mile to
help them, especially those
persons who have helped
them to overcome their trauma
and abuse or assisted
them to be out of harms way.
“Our children wish to dedicate
this day as a special MY HE-
RO DAY whereby they honor
these persons. The children
are preparing a small event
for the invited guests,' said
Amanda.She said to all the
officials of Welfare Organisations
and Departments who
deal with children in crises '
we as Kuselo wish to thank
you for your hard work, because
of your dedication and
commitment to child care,
children's lives are saved,
they have a better and brighter
future because of your intervention'.
'Please join us on this day
and make this day a memorable
day for the children, concluded
Kuselo CYCC gets
ready for 'intake'
THE Department of Social
Development Amathole Municipality
District has verbally
confirmed approval of Kuselo
CYCC's residential care facility.
'The approval is now in Bhisho
being signed. It is hoped that
the certificate of approval will
be issued this week,' according
to Founding Director,
Amanda Coetzee. 'It has been
a long and difficult road
getting the centre registered
as a Protection site, this
certification will allow us to
house and care for abused,
abandoned and neglected
children who are removed
from their homes through the
courts and willplaced into our
care.
'The difficulty in registration is
due to the demarcated location
where the centre is
situated between Stutterheim,
Amathole and Buffalo City
Metron,' said Amanda.
She said the Demarcation is
now all done 'so now the Amathole
Municipality has registered
our Centre within their
district.'A special thank you to
staff of the Department of Social
Development, Stutterheim,
Amathole and Buffalo
City for all the efforts and assistance
given to Kuselo CY-
CC in their struggle for
registration.
'Your determination and support
is highly appreciated.
The centre is legally approved
and is able to operate and
function as a residential care
facility,' said Amanda.
She also thanked the community
and public for all their
support, assistance and commitment
throughout this difficult
time.
“Without your love and care
this registration would not
have been possible,' said
Amanda.
'The centre structure is ready
for intake. Once the certificate
is received this week,
children will be placed immediately
into our facility.
'We appeal to the community
to support these children as
we are in urgent need of food,
clothing of all sizes and
bedding.
“Our premises will house and
care for 60 children. Ages will
range from 0 - 18 years.
'Please help us to stock our
store before the children
arrive so that we can provide
them with 3 meals a day and
a loving home away and free
from abuse and violence, '
said manda.She said this was
an exciting time for Kuselo
staff who have been waiting
patiently to open the doors
to children at risk and in crisis.
“Not because of just getting
children but because we will
be able to give them a home
where we can care for them
and they will no longer have
to fear hunger or abuse.
'We can show them love and
compassion, help them to
overcome their trauma and
in so doing help them to grow
into the person they are
intended to be.
'This can only be possible
with the support of our
community and public. As a
Non Profit Organisation we
are currently not funded by
any Government Department
and therefore request all the
assistance we can get to care
for these children,' concluded
Amand.
If you are able to assist in
any way please contact
Amanda on 0725127227 or
email
kuselocycc@gmail.com to arrange
FRIDAY 7 OCTOBER 2016 THE BUGLE 9
Supplementary education can reduce your
child’s stress levels and help them achieve
Every parent wants their
children to enjoy school,
achieve well and go on to lead
happy and successful lives.
Today however, more
children than ever are
complaining of stress due to
the pressures of schoolwork
and impending exams.
Talking through problems,
identifying troublesome
subjects and asking teachers
for extra work can help
reduce your child's anxiety.
However, many parents are
now looking beyond school
for additional support in the
form of supplementary
education.
There are a number of types
of supplementary education
available and it is important to
choose the right one for your
child. Whether struggling or
not, each child needs to grasp
the fundamental skills that are
vital for academic progress.
Firm foundations must be
built in core subjects and
children need to develop the
confidence and study skills to
Iearn and achieve.
Kumon Education SA is one
of the supplementary
education providers available
in South Africa. Kumon offers
Maths and English
programmes, designed to
help each child to reach his or
her potential. By treating each
child as an individual, Kumon
provides a solid foundation in
the fundamentals of Maths
and
English and allows children to
develop life-long self-learning
skills.As a result, children are
given the self-assurance to
focus and excel at school,
and to develop the
transferable skills necessary
to succeed in life.
Talking about why she
enrolled her daughter with
Kumon, Mrs Daniels explains,
"I first became interested in
Kumon because my
daughter's school marks were
good for English but a little
disappointing for Maths. I
wanted to help her achieve
her best and a family
member suggested the
Kumon programmes, so I
enrolled both of my
daughters immediateIy."
But does Kumon really make
a noticeable difference? Mrs
Daniels definitely believes so.
"I have really seen the
benefits of Kumon, in
particular how it has helped
with schoolwork and made
my daughters' studies a lot
easier and stress-free. I have
also noticed the benefits of
Kumon in theirschool exams."
Mrs van der Merwe from
Randburg agrees that
Kumon does make a genuine
difference. "After six months
Pieter's work has
significantly improved and he
has moved well ahead of his
starting point," she explains.
This has been reflected in
improving test results
throughout his school year,
culminating in an excellent
school report."
In previous years, parents
may have perceived that
looking for extra help was
admitting failure, or that they
were being too pushy. Today,
thousands of parents simply
see it as a natural part of
being a parent. By providing
their child with that extra
support they can minimise
their chiIdren's stress and
give them the best possible
chance to achieve their
dreams.
Kumon has over 300 study
centres throughout South
Africa, Namibia, Botswana,
Kenya and Zambia. To find
SPAR FAMILY CHALLENGE TO RAISE FUNDS FOR REACH FOR A DREAM
If you have always wanted to
give back to
your community but had no
idea how, SPAR Family Challenge
has a healthy way to
help you do that.
The annual SPAR Family
Challenge fun run event on
October 8 will raise funds for
Reach for a Dream (RFAD) –
an institution for terminally-ill
children in the East
London area.
RFAD’s Eastern Cape
branch manager Ronell Davel
said they are very pleased
to have been this year’s beneficiary
because the money
raised would help terminallyill
children realise their
dreams.
“The East London community
are always supportive, not
just to us but to all the charities
and we are very grateful
for that,” she said.
By realising the dreams, Davel
said they want to bring
hope to the lives of the children.
“They forget all about their
treatment and the pain that it
brings. Their excitement is
priceless,” Davel said.
She said in one month, they
help realise at least 26
dreams. RFAD assists children
from three to 18 years
old, who are battling illnesses
such as leukaemia, HIV and
Aids, duchenne muscular dystrophy,
liver sclerosis, nephrotic
syndrome and cancer.
The SPAR Family Challenge
consists of 5km and 9.8km
runs. Participants in both races
will start from Beaconhurst
School then go along Avalon
Road, Imp Lane, Junction
Road and Hillcrest Drive and
back to finish at the school.
Eastern Cape promotions
and advertising controller Roseann
Shadrach said, with
their emphasis on family participation
and healthy lifestyles,
the SPAR Family
Challenge was a perfect fit
for the retailer.
She said participants would
be treated to some spectacular
entertainment, including a
special performance by comedian
Gino Fabbri and emcee
Graham Gordon. There
would also be lucky draw
incentives, one of which is a
spa treatment and a lunch at
Miarestate Boutique Hotel
and Spa.
Runners and walkers can
enter
on www.sparfamilychallenge
.co.za or at cycle shops in the
city until October 5. Registration
is from 10am to 7pm at
the Beaconhurst sports field
on the day before the event.
INVITATION TO ALL ART
LOVERS
An art exhibition, with 39 local artists participating, will be held
at Kings Mall from 8 – 15 October in shop 11 which is situated
close to Pick ‘n Pay.
All funds raised during this event, that is being organized by
the Gonubie Lions Club in conjunction with King's Mall, will
go towards the Carel du Toit Centre where deaf children are
taught to speak.
Viewing hours will be from 10:00 to 18:00 daily and all readers
are cordially invited to pop in to admire our local talent.
FRIDAY 7 OCTOBER 2016 THE BUGLE 13
Dimbaza to rise out of the ashes
MORE than R300-million has
been earmarked for revitalising
the Dimbaza industrial
hub, with a number of projects
and jobs in mind to boost
the economy in Buffalo City
Metro.
The hub was once an active
industrial node under the
apartheid government, but
over the last decade many
companies have pulled out
and several factories in the
area now stand abandoned.
A start-up budget of R344-
million is to be spread across
three years for the Dimbaza
industrial hub and the establishment
of an industrial eco
park.
In the 2016-17 financial year,
R118-million will be spent, in
2017-18, R172-million, and
the year after, R54-million,
mainly from the Department
of Trade and Industry (DTI).
The Eastern Cape Development
Corporation (ECDC) is
spearheading and managing
the project, and if council
approves, BCM will play a
role in upgrading the bulk
infrastructure, issuing planning
approvals, environmental
health permits and
re-zoning processes.
A food factory, recreation and
eating space, retail centre,
upgrading of roads and infrastructure
are just some of the
projects in the pipeline for the
area.
BCM’s new council speaker,
Alfred Mtsi, said the new
council would discuss and
decide on the Dimbaza Industrial
Hub and Eco Park
projects soon.
Road construction in King
causing major hassles
OUR main roads are in such
bad condition after the construction
company who is supposed
to be repairing another
section has had to dig up
(due to infracture upgrades)
and leave 'hazardous conditions'
for motorists.
Now there are these huge
'potholes' just getting bigger
and more dangerous.
Who is going to pay for our
vehicles suspension, tyres
and rims to be repaired! Most
insurance companies do not
pay for tyres damaged by potholes.
I just wish they would start a
section get finished then
move on. This is going to
cause the closure of businesses,
which leads to unemployment,
etc, etc, etc.
Did the person who approved
the work really think about
what they were doing. They
should have never closed off
the entire section of Grey
street. Maybe only half, then
get it done then the other half.
And another one, our fuel bill
has gone up because of the
long wait in queues or stop
go's avoiding holes or the
detour we have to travel to
get to work.
DA councillor Annette Rademeyer
responds: I drove
through town and the suburbs
this week and I am horrified at
little bits being dug up all over
the place and the trenches
etc and today I hear that the
N2 from just outside King to
Breidbach will be closed and
residents must use alternative
routes when going to EL!
That's going to be fun. I am
writing to the SANRAl engineers
who had a meeting at
the golf club and who undertook
that the process would
be as little disruptive as possible.
I will also insist that they fix
the trenches - someone is
going to get killed hitting one
of those and flipping their car.
*The Bugle is waiting for a
response from SANRAL regarding
the situation of the
road upgrades in King.

Core strength .
AS a runner of many years I
have often heard people talk
about how important core
strength is.
But as many runners do, I
have ignored this over the
years, to my detriment. As
one gets older Core strength
becomes even more important
and runners/walkers and
generally anyone doing exercise
of any sort should try to
focus on core strength sessions
at least twice a week.
There is no clear definition of
Core Strength training but
basically it will always entail
components of balance and
stability, abdominal and lower
back work, and all the muscles
of the trunk.
You can do your own core
training at home by incorporating
abdominal work, plank
etc but to get the best results
get hold of your local gym
and see if any programmes
/classes that are being held
focus on this .
As your core becomes stronger
you will notice a marked
improvement in your running,
especially on the hills.
One does not realize the
importance of your Glutes
(bum muscles ), for instance,
until you start doing proper
core strength work.
Overall body strength starts
from the core !
All very spacious, 2 with fireplaces & built-in-cupboards. Spacious lounge
with fireplace, dining room, single bathroom, large kitchen, separate
laundry, fully installed alarm system with beams all-round the house,
electric gate and boundary wall / fence all around the property,
single car port as well as a large workshop. R1.3 Million.
The Ventriloquist
A young ventriloquist is touring the
clubs and stops to entertain at a bar in
a small town. He's going through his
usual run of stupid blond jokes, when
a big blond woman in the fourth row
stands on her chair and says: "I've
heard just about enough of your
denigrating blond jokes!
What makes you think you can
stereotype women that way? What
does a person's physical attributes
have to do with their worth as a human
being?
It's guys like you who keep women
like me from being respected at work
and in my community, of reaching my
full potential as a person ... because
you and our kind continue to
perpetuate discrimination against not
only blondes but women at large ... all
in the name of humor."
Flustered, the ventriloquist begins to
apologize, but the blond stops him.
"You stay out of this. Mister, I'm talking
to that little jerk on your knee!"

NAAICE !
It was a nice clean sweep for
the South African teams this
last weekend with our rugby
and cricketers leaving the
Aussies thinking “what happened
?'...hopefully, this
“momentum” can be carried
through for the remaining
three 50-over tests....and
while on clean sweeps, The
Earl and staff had some clean
sweeping to do of their own
on Sunday after about three
hundred bikers converged on
The Ritz for an all night
party/sleep over on Saturday
afternoon. Anyway, a very festive
time was had by all, despite
those sleeping in tents
in all that rain, for the Motor
The commitment by all is
fantastic to see on a weekly
basis .
Notably also this weekend
the Gratz family had a full
turnout and they ALL had
barcodes this time. 'Well
done Wayne, Megan, Sarah
and Bridget,' said Mike.
He said it was fantastic to see
so many families turning out
every weekend.
RYDER CUP
The Americans beat Europe
on the weekend, 17-11. Formula
One racing is not exactly
on the top over the writers
viewing list, but, it is a whole
lot more palitable than listening
to those loud, uncouth
baying and whooping American
spectators around the
golf course...it became quite
frustrating for the Europeans
who were subjected to sledging
and insults from the sides
over the fairways, and, one of
the British commentators
used an apt phrase to describe
that racket as
“mindless”..spot on, Boetie.
TECHNOLOGY ?
It's quite frustrating phoning
varies company offices that
we all have to deal with..
banks, insurance, doctors etc.
You always end up taking to a
phone “secretary” who gives
you multiple options, except
the police who don't answer
the phone or take their time
doing so. However, all is not
lost, someone supplied this
/ costume and see how many
family members you can
entice to join us! Just a
thought,' he urged.
For the record : L Shush was
1st ( 18.25) M Gqotile, 2nd,
S Ngqoba 3rd. In the Ladies
Nosintu Macanda was 1st
(26.26 ), Michelle June Ferreira
2nd, and Leche Smith 3rd .
'Well done all of you see you
on Saturday,' concluded Mike.
Parkrun gets the youngsters out
commented on the speed of
many of our young runners
as well, added Mike.
He said so many milestones
are being reached on a
weekly basis that it is difficult
to keep up but here goes:
Tarryn Willard volunteered for
the 25th time, Margaret
Foxcroft did her 30th Parkrun,
Andre Johannes (20 ) Lynn
Ikin (20), Bukhosi Ndakisa
(10), Mwelase Puza (10),
Lynn Neuper (25 ) with her
dog doing about 20 I reckon!).
'There are so many more
runners in the high 20's etc
and I will try and acknowledge
all as the weeks go on,'
said Mike.
