MORRISSEY MANCHESTER GIG
He might not be Manchester’s favourite son
(after all, you don’t earn a reputation for
being outspoken by making friends and
being moderate), but Morrissey is certainly one of
the city’s most distinguished. From seminal group
The Smiths to celebrated solo outings, Morrissey
has ridden the wave of success and artistic integrity
right across the decades, never compromising his
sound or views.
It’s an approach that’s clearly paid off. Announcing
his only UK gig of 2016 was to be held at the
enormous Manchester Arena, tickets didn’t last long
when they went on-sale and were snapped up (and,
disgracefully, resold) in record time. Of course,
when you’re an artist with a back catalogue as rich
as Morrissey’s, such a situation is essentially an
everyday occurrence.
Eschewing the idea of putting on a gig at one of
the stadiums in the city (as the Stone Roses did at
the Etihad Stadium in June), Morrissey continues to
prove himself as an iconoclastic figure, operating
on his own set of rules and morals that rule how he
works.
Due to occur on Saturday August 20th, the gig is
his first in Manchester since 2012 and will be part
of an international tour in 2016. Support will come
from Irish singer/songwriter Damian Dempsey.
