14 | October 20, 2016 | The orland park prairie News opprairie.com Business Briefs Culver’s of Orland Park team member awarded VIP Scholarship It was 2012 when Orland Park’s Angie Berls first visited her local Culver’s on 159th Street. A high school student at the time, Berls would often dine there with her parents. Four years later, she is one of the most beloved team members the restaurant has employed since opening in 2010. A self-admitted math nerd, Berls planned to transfer as a junior this past August to Illinois State University, where she is to major in accounting. Her hard work at both Culver’s and Moraine Valley Community College have earned her three consecutive Culver’s VIP Scholarship Awards, the most recent honor coming in the form of a $2,500 honorarium, which will help offset her ISU tuition. She clocked out for possibly the last time this past July 28,a. Team members submit applications for funding, and judging teams are made up of suppliers, educators and friends of Culver’s. Since 1993, Culver’s has invested more than $3 million in student scholarships to nearly 3,000 team members. Avenue Animal Hospital to donate to Orland Township Food Pantry The Avenue Animal Hospital, 16736 Oak Park Ave. in Tinley Park, is conducting a food drive for both people and pets through mid-November. People are asked to donate nonperishable items. A portion of the proceeds are to be donated to the Orland Township Food Pantry, according to the organization. Orland Square to return Simon Kidgits Boo Bash Oct. 29 All junior superheroes, magical monsters, pint-sized pirates and picture-perfect princesses are called from 10 a.m.-noon Oct. 29 to Orland Square Simon Kidgits’ Boo Bash. Children 14 and younger are invited to show off their most creative and spectacular costumes at the annual event, which is to take place in the upper level Carson’s court, 288 Orland Square Drive. As part of the free, family-friendly event, attendees can enjoy a costume contest, spooky storytelling, fun treats, interactive games and a visit from extra special guests. The event is free for Kidgits Club members. People can sign up for a free membership at the mall office or online at www.simon.com/kidgits ahead of the event. Burger 21 goes pink in October by donating portion of sales from shakes, floats, fountain drinks sold Burger 21, a fast casual franchise with a location at 14650 S. LaGrange Road in Orland Park, is breaking out the pink straws in October to support the fight against breast cancer. The burger brand is partnering with National Breast Cancer Foundation during the month of October to donate 21 cents from each sale of fountain drinks, signature and classic shakes and retro floats, as well as kids fountain drinks, shakes and milks. Any beverage that sports a pink straw applies. All Burger 21 restaurants are participating in the fundraiser and encourage guests to visit their local restaurants during Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Proceeds will help support early detection, education, support services and research for those affected by breast cancer — a disease with which more than 240,000 women in the United States are diagnosed each year. Orland Park releases new LaGrange Road Widening update Submitted by Village of Orland Park The Village of Orland Park Friday, Oct. 14, released a new update for the LaGrange Road Widening Contruction project. For the next several weeks, multiple crews will be working north of 159th Street through 131st Street, in both the northbound and southbound directions. Work includes median concrete nose installation, brick paver stone placement, parkway grading, tree pit excavation, parkway sidewalk installation and street lighting. Most of this work is to require a lane closure to be able to maneuver equipment, material trucks and provide a safe area for crews to work. Sidewalk and street lighting work is ongoing along the parkways of the side streets throughout the corridor. Motorists are advised to expect delays while traveling through the corridor.
