Sandburg Standouts
of the Week
1. Emilyee McGiles
The Sandburg senior
golfer shot a 73 at the
Lockport Township
Sectional to advance to
the state finals. There,
she finished her season
by tying for 35th
with a two-day total of
157.
2. Jared Monnett
The Eagles football
kicker nailed the deciding
field goal from 35
yards out to help make
Sandburg’s road trip
to O’Fallon, Missouri,
worth it with a 32-29
win.
3. Dylan Violetto
The senior midfielder
for the Sandburg boys
soccer squad netted
the only goal in a 1-0
victory over Lincoln-
Way Central to end the
regular season.
Three hundred and five
miles and a six-hour bus
ride later, Sandburg students
stepped off the bus Oct. 14
in O’Fallon, Missouri, to
face their opponent the evening
of Friday, Oct. 14, Fort
Zumwalt West.
It has been a rough season
for Sandburg. The team has
experienced a slew of injuries
and some devastating
losses. But there also have
been moments highlighted
by wins, such as a comefrom-behind
win during the
Eagles’ homecoming game.
Sandburg improved to 3-5
in a non-conference game
against Fort Zumwalt West,
which fell to 5-4.
“To have an experience
like this — it’s a nice thing
to come down and make this
effort to drive six hours and
then come away with a victory,”
Sandburg coach Scott
Peters said in a phone interview
late the evening of Oct.
14. “It’s a relief.”
PRESSBOX PICKS
Our staff’s predictions for
the top games in Week 9
Lincoln-Way East (6-2) hosts Lockport (6-2)
Lincoln-Way Central (6-2) hosts Metea Valley (2-6)
Sandburg (3-5) hosts Lincoln-Way West (5-3)
Providence Catholic (3-5) hosts Mt. Carmel (4-4)
Andrew (0-8) hosts Stagg (0-8)
In a 32-29 win over Fort
Zumwalt West, it was Jared
Monnett’s last field goal from
35 yards out in the fourth
quarter that was the deciding
factor in the matchup.
“Jared battled some injuries
himself,” Peters said.
“Because of that, he struggled
a little bit this season.”
Peters said that it would go
down as a special moment for
Monnett during the secondto-last
game of his senior year.
This seemed to be the
game in which everything
clicked for the Eagles.
“Defensively, we did a
very good job of stopping
the run,” Peters said. “That
was big for us. We moved
the ball through the air. [Collin]
Friedsam did a good job
getting the ball to our playmakers
hands.”
Sandburg looks to finish
the season strong when it is
scheduled to take the its Orland
Park field at 7:30 p.m.
Friday, Oct. 21, against Lincoln-Way
West.
While no area teams
qualified for this past weekend’s
Class 2A girls golf
state finals, a half dozen
players still represented the
southwest suburbs there.
And those six individuals
emerged from perhaps the
top sectional in the state.
That was the Lockport
Township Sectional, which
was held Oct. 11 at Broken
Arrow Golf Club in Lockport.
At the sectional, two-time
defending state champion
Hinsdale Central (305) won
its sixth-straight sectional
title. Naperville North (315)
was second, while Benet
Academy (317) was third.
Sandburg (334) was
fourth, followed by Lincoln-
Way Central (336), while
Lincoln-Way East (349)
placed sixth, and Providence
(351) and Waubonsie Valley
tied for seventh.
Neuqua Valley (376), Oswego
East (400), Mother
McAuley (409) and Marist
(417) rounded out the scores
for the 12 teams.
That meant that the first
time in four years, Sandburg
was not at the state finals as a
team. The Eagles, however,
still sent a pair of players.
Those were senior Emilyee
McGiles (73) and sophomore
Hannah Kilbane (77).
McGiles picked a great
time to shoot her seasonbest
18-hole round. That allowed
her to become the first
Eagles girls golfer to qualify
for state all 4-years of high
school, and her 1-over tied
her for third place overall
with Hinsdale Central senior
Jessica Lee.
Naperville North junior
Lauren Nay was second with
an even-par 72.
“I really wanted to play
the best I could, and hitting
the fairways and greens
makes it easier,” McGiles
said. “I shot an 82 here in the
[SouthWest Suburban Conference
Blue] tournament,
but this was my best of the
year. This was the time to do
it, when it counts.
to continue it all four years is
