PULLING OUT ALL THE STOPS
IT’S WAR: Joining in
the fun at the Bathurst
Water woes
Flow of water project stemmed by bad management
JON HOUZET
SERIOUS problems
in the Ndlambe
bulk water supply
project have
come to light
after a source
close to the project leaked
information revealing bad
decisions, a massive waste
of taxpayers’ money, and
highly questionable and
possibly corrupt contract
appointments.
TotT was provided with
minutes of meetings, official
reports, e-mail exchanges
and letters pertaining to the
project going back to 2013.
The main parties are the
implementing agent and
main contractor Amatola
Water, the Department of
Water Affairs (DWA) and
Ndlambe Municipality, with
various appointed
subcontractors also
mentioned in the documents.
Projects were delayed by
months and even years, at
ever-increasing cost;
contracts were terminated
after botched jobs and had
to be redone at a cost of
millions of rands; water
leaks wasting millions of
litres a month were not
being attending to. In one
instance, a subcontractor not
named in an award letter
was found working on a
project without any
notification; and expert
advice by engineering
consultants was ignored.
There is more information
than can be captured in a
single story, so TotT will
focus on various issues over
the next few weeks.
Two of the most
controversial contracts in the
bulk water project involved
the supply of water to
Alexandria, which comprised
the laying of a 10km pipeline
from the Cannon Rocks
reservoir to Fish Kraal
(contract 14), and a 13km
pipeline from the Fish Kraal
reservoir to the Alexandria
reservoir (contract 15).
Both contracts were
originally awarded to
Ukamva in May 2013 and
A TALE OF TWO LEAKS
WHARF STREET LEAK: Left, business owners in Wharf Street complained
about a leak in their street last week which had hindered the repaving of
the road. They said it appeared to be an old leak from a few years ago that
had not been fixed properly. They said contractors working on the road
were told by an official in the infrastructure directorate that it was a
‘natural spring’ and to just to cover it up. Ndlambe Municipality has not
responded to questions
WATER OVER THE BRIDGE: (Picture above) A concerned resident reported a
burst pipe on the Nico Malan Bridge on Monday afternoon that had
collapsed a hole in the pavement. The municipality did not initially respond.
Later that evening the DA e-mailed a notification that residents on the west
bank would have no water until the early hours of the following morning,
but it appears to have been repaired before then Picture: AMANDA MOULD
asked for his identity
to be kept
confidential, said the
awarding of this
contract to Ukamva
was against the advice
of Aurecon, the
engineers appointed
to look for
subcont ractors.
“Aurecon’s choice
was overruled by
Amatola Water,” he
said. “The original
contractor [Ukamva]
had no capacity when
he started. But he was
able to get loans for
plant.”
After numerous
delays and botched
jobs, the Ukamva
contract was
terminated in
November 2013.
Amatola Water
initially tried to
complete the work
itself, but fell behind.
A contract to fix a
section of the pipeline
in contract 15 was
awarded to Give
Ziyawa Construction,
owned by Chris
Gidana. Gidana is the
husband of Asanda
Gidana, who at the
time was programme
manager for regional
bulk infrastructure at
the Department of
Water and Sanitation
(DWS) and is currently
director of operations
at Amatola Water.
In the minutes of a
“Ndlambe
inter vention” meeting
on November 5 2014,
it was recorded that
Asanda requested that
she be recused due to
a potential conflict of
interest on contract 15.
The meeting agreed
and said in future
another DWS official
would represent DWS
on the intervention
meetings, but Asanda
would be kept on the
distribution list.
Give Ziyawa was
originally awarded a
contract for
R2.6-million for a 5km
section. The rest of the
pipeline was going to
be divided among
CRIMEBRIEFS
THE past week had been significantly quieter
in terms of crime in Port Alfred and
surrounding areas, with burglary incidents
lower than they have been in months.
However, petty crimes such as shoplifting
have been on the rise over the last few weeks
as well as an increase in reports of suspicious
activity. But few of these resulted in crime.
What can be concluded from these reports
is increased vigilance, and that residents are
practising basic safety precautions in keeping
their neighbourhoods safe.
Rice thieves at Zama Zama Shop
Last Wednesday, MultiSecurity control room
received a panic signal from the Zama Zama
Shop in Runeli Drive. Response officers
attended the scene and reported that two
suspects stole two 5kg bags of rice.
Harassment at VW Market Square
MultiSecurity response officers were
dispatched to VW Market Square last Friday to
assist with a mentally disturbed man who was
harassing staff and customers. The same man
returned the next day and was again removed
by SAPS.
Cellphone stolen at Southwell Manor
In the early hours of Saturday morning, the
MultiSecurity control room received a phone
call from a woman at Southwell Manor who
was not a MultiSecurity client, but reported
that a suspect had stolen a Samsung S3 cell
phone and had jumped off her balcony.
Response officers attended the scene and
reported that the suspect had gained entry by
climbing up the drain pipe and climbing
through the open bathroom window.
‘False alarm’ of assault
In an incident that seemed to generate greater
response than required, just before midnight
last Saturday the MultiSecurity control room
received a phone call from a client who
reported that a man living on his premises
had been assaulted.
The assault victim reported that he had only
suffered a cut to his hand and that he did not
want an ambulance.
other subcontractors.
“But Amatola Water
kept giving Give
Ziyawa more work,”
our source said.
The full extent of
contract 15, worth
R13-million, was
awarded to Give
Ziyawa in August 2014,
with a projected
completion date of
December 15 that
same year.
“At one stage, Water
Affairs insisted on
weekly progress
reports. That lasted
about a week, then it
became fortnightly
and then monthly,” our
source said.
The minutes of the
November 2014
meeting record that
Ndlambe’s former
deputy infrastructure
director Richard Pote
pointed out
“inconsistencies and
false information” in
the weekly report.
Construction on
resources were
allocated to contract
15, with a view to
getting that section
completed as soon as
possible, to supply
water to Alexandria.
Even so, further
delays caused the
project to be
completed months
after the projected
d at e .
Now there is a
completed pipeline
between Cannon
Rocks and Alexandria,
but it is not being
used because the
Cannon Rocks reverse
osmosis plant does
not produce enough
water to also supply
Alexandria, our source
said.
TotT sent questions
caught the attention of
Dutch record company
Wolf Rage Recordings,
which has signed him
With over 11 000 hits
Producing and
mastering music has
been this Port Alfred
High School
mat riculant’s passion
since he was 14 years
old, when he started
showing an interest in
electronic music.
His dad bought him
a turntable and, since
then, Howard has
grown his passion into
an art the whole
family is proud of.
Earlier this year,
Howard spent some
time in Johannesburg
where he underwent
an intensive training
programme and
received a DJ
qualification that will
give him an edge in
the industry, when he
pursues a degree with
an audio college
studying sound
engineering.
For production
purposes Howard uses
and Presonus, and
describes his style as
KEYS TO THE FUTURE: Port Alfred High School pupil and DJ Damian Howard has recently enjoyed
success with his latest computer-generated track, ‘Everybody Jump’. Earlier this year, he was also
signed by a Dutch record label and has received lots of exposure through social media platforms
i n t e g r at i n g
elect ro-house,
progressive house,
deep house and “big
room”.
“I have always loved
music, but after
getting tired of
listening to other
people’s music and
imagining what I could
do with it, I decided to
create my own,”
Howard said.
As far as early
influences are
concerned, Howard
looks up to artists like
DJ Blend – a
Mexican-American
producer, whom he
describes as a genius
behind a turntable –
and the likes of South
African favourite DJ
Fr e s h .
After spending some
time on an exchange
programme in
Germany, Howard
squeezed in some
time to explore the
nightlife and
discovered a taste for
the growing European
market in EDM.
With big dreams set
on collaborations one
day, with local and
i n t e r n at i o n a l
headliners such as
David Guetta and DJ
Fresh, Howard spends
his free time creating
new rhythm and hard
rock sounds with
different artists from
around South Africa,
which take hours and
hours to blend, using
vocals and beats from
a range of genres.
Although mom and
dad are both
extremely proud,
Howard admits that
not everybody
understands the EDM
movement.
“They are very
supportive, but it’s not
exactly their taste. My
dad gets it a bit more
– he is the cool one,”
Howard said.
For now, Howard
continues to juggle
school, family and
music while
cultivating a name for
himself in the industry.
His music can be
bought on iTunes and
Bathurst Agricultural Museum
Farm Fair on Saturday.
The latest open day at the
museum was its best yet, with
something for young and old alike.
Visitors were greeted by the
sight and sound of blacksmiths at
work in a makeshift forge under
the Pike’s Post awning.
A long-cherished plan to have a
permanent forge built at the
museum is closer to fruition, with
foundations prepared at the site.
One of two local blacksmiths
doing demonstrations at the
museum, Jon Pieters, said the
Eastern Cape Blacksmiths
Association had been established
about three months ago.
“We plan to have a blacksmiths
convention here from June 28 to
July 4, with people coming from all
over the country,” Pieters said.
Around the corner from the
smithy, the Bathurst Dance Sport
group was conducting ballroom
dancing demonstrations at Pike’s
Po st .
The serious young dancers from
and adults.
Herman Paul was pottering
around the vintage engines on
display in the museum, donated by
various people and painstakingly
restored and kept in working order
by Paul and fellow enthusiasts.
Gary Grey drove around in a 1955
Field Marshall tractor, which bore a
notice inviting all women to sit in
the driver’s seat for five minutes
without smiling.
Mills returned with fun
boeresport activities for the
children, including sack,
egg-and-spoon, hoop and
three-legged races, tug of war (with
their moms) and horseshoe toss.
Later some adults also took part in
the sack races and tug of war.
The Keiskamma Music Academy
strings section played relaxing
classical music while the ballroom
dancers returned to the floor, and
members of the audience enjoyed
tea and cake or a drink from the
produce was also on sale.

Music, art mix to set tone
at next Classics evening
Novel take on
Messiaen’s
compositions
RICHMOND House Music Room will
host a collaboration between a
pianist and a painter at the next
Classics at the Castle event –
never before staged in Port Alfred.
This unique music and visual art
presentation on May 28 by artist
Heleen du Preez and pianist
Benjamin Fourie, features the work
of Olivier Messiaen (1908-1992) –
an extraordinary 20th-century
composer, pianist and organist.
Fourie, who performed at
Classics at the Castle last year,
returns to play Messiaen’s Vingt
Regards sur l’E n fa n t - J é s u s (20
Contemplations on the Christ
Child) surrounded by an exhibition
of Du Preez’s 25 paintings, which
were inspired by the music.
Messiaen was a child prodigy
from a literary background and
also a devout Catholic. He became
one of the most acclaimed
composers of the last century,
creating this epic work during
World War 2 in 1944, in Paris.
Having been a prisoner-of-war
himself, he searched for a
language of mystical love amid the
most depressing turmoil of war.
Vingt Regards is considered one
of the most awe-inspiring works for
Facebook question on
Wo r k e r s ’ Day meaning
draws varied response
TALK of the Town asked the
following question on Facebook:
What does Workers’ Day mean to
you?
Within a few hours we’d already
received a number of comments,
and it seems to have drawn quite a
varied response from the public at
large.
Dianne Miller wrote, “It means
another day South Africans across
the board sit around and waste valuable time to
improve the economy.
“We have so many holidays and we are a
truly lazy nation. I can’t even imagine how we
would function in the US for example when you
might get Christmas eve and Thanksgiving off.
Other than that it’s business as usual for all
sectors. I am annoyed that we still think we can
lounge around as ‘Rome Burns’. Get moving
people!”
Gavin Came responded to Miller’s post.
“No one in SA is compelled to take a public
holiday and many don’t. Anyway it’s great for
tourism so at least that part of the economy
gets a lift,” wrote Came.
After a long explanation of the history of the
day Bev Young wrote, “When I was in business
– it was a disruption to the week.
“Nog al, if the first was a Saturday or Sunday
then you had to close on a Monday. I personally
think there are too many public holidays.”
Jaco van Rensburg took the fiscal approach
and wrote, “Double pay”, while Ricky Collin
wrote, “Another day for those that do nothing to
do more nothing.”
Zimbini Matyolo wasn’t sure about the holiday
either when she wrote, “Have no idea! I just
thought maybe back in the day there was a toyi
toyi by workers and that’s why it’s a holiday. I’m
bothered by this wasteful week of kids sitting at
home doing niks!”
Unsure whether to brag or complain, Twan
EPIC PERFORMANCE: Pianist Benjamin Fourie will perform a unique
collaboration with artist Heleen du Preez at the next Classics at the
Castle event on May 28
piano ever composed and presents
extreme challenges technically and
in terms of interpretation.
Fourie says of the piece: “The
grand style of the music caters for
listeners, who are prepared to be
thoroughly immersed in art”.
Nature-lovers will be intrigued to
hear how Messiaen incorporates
the birdsong he loved. He regarded
birds as the “greatest musicians on
our planet”.
Fourie gave the South African
première of this work at the 2006
National Arts Festival and has
since performed it at several other
venues.
Du Preez, an artist from Lady
Grey, has done 25 abstract
paintings on the 20 parts of the
music and she and Fourie have
collaborated in various music/
visual art presentations, including
the 2014 Lady Grey Passion Play
w e e ke n d .
“The music of Messiaen always
intrigued me,” Du Preez said. “I
have the CD of bird-calls that
Messiaen wrote the piano notation
for. After attending Benjamin’s
performance of the entire Vingt
Regards I started visualising the
colours, lines and movement I
experienced.
Badenhorst wrote, “In the
entertainment industry, public
holidays don’t exist neither do
w e e ke n d s . ..lol.”
Russell Deutschmann wasn’t
holding back when he wrote,
“Another day for government to
party and spend public money
using workers as the excuse.”
Stu-Art Lavender wrote, “Should
be called “Jobbers Day” no one
ever asked me, EVER for work.”
But the simplest answer came from Gary
Purdon who wrote just one word: “Zip”.
Exhibition open for viewing from
14h30 for both concert-goers and other
members of the public, on a donation basis.
“When my husband passed away
in March 2011, the mystical/
spiritual quality of this
monumental work offered comfort
and I slowly began a process of
interpreting the first eight
movements visually, infusing my
mind with every note of the music.”
The Classics at the Castle
concert will start at 3.30pm with a
30-minute interval at 5pm and the
second half from 5.30pm-7pm.
Audience members are welcome to
chat to the artists during inter val
and before and after the concert.
“Art and music lovers will likely
experience this event as totally
absorbing and even transcendent,”
classics host Sue Gordon.
Tickets became available at KNA
on May 2.
Similar to last year when Fourie
performed in Port Alfred, an entire
three-part package has been
arranged. The full package
includes a special three-course
meal at the Wharf Street Brew Pub
and Restaurant after the concert
and art exhibition. Tickets for this
entire package (concert, exhibition
and meal) are R230 per person.
The price for the art experience
and piano recital combined, is
R100 and includes welcome drinks
and detailed programme notes.
OPINION
P ro j e c t
must be
p ro b e d
EVERY now and then a story comes around
that is too big to tell in one article.
In our small and mostly peaceful part of
the country we do not often get the kind of
stories told by the dailies, such as rampant
corruption in the Eastern Cape government
or the horrible way bodies were handled in
a state hospital morgue.
But the ANC has shown us that
anywhere there is a municipality, and
anywhere taxpayers’ money is handled,
there is sure to be irregular, fruitless and
wasteful expenditure, and highly
questionable contract appointments.
Such is the case with the Ndlambe bulk
water supply project, although in this case
the municipality appears for the most part
to be a passive accomplice while the main
contractor, Amatola Water, has been
making bad decisions which will have
far-reaching repercussions for consumers.
And the Department of Water Affairs has
also stamped its approval.
When TotT’s source handed over a thick
folder of documents illustrating the sorry
affair, it was with a poetic quip: “So many
contractual issues between the cup and
the lip, and there hasn’t yet been a sip of
wat e r ”.
Understandably, he wants to remain
anonymous.
When we reported on the Port Alfred
reverse osmosis (RO) plant project finally
getting off the ground a few weeks ago, we
thought we were telling a good news story.
But since then, we have heard disturbing
things about the unsustainability of the
boreholes Amatola Water is using and how
farmers have already been affected by a
dropping water table, making their own
boreholes useless and drying out their
wetlands.
That story has still to be told.
Our source told us to ask about the cost
of the RO plant – which seems to have
tripled in price since early estimates – and
about the affordability of RO technology in
general, in an area where the municipality
is billing consumers for just 47% of the
water it supplies, meaning the remaining
53% is given away for free, or lost to
wa st e .
At present, there is cross-subsidisation
between all the towns and villages in
Ndlambe, which has created a buffer for
the areas with the most expensively
produced water – Bushman’s River with its
desalination plant, and Cannon Rocks
which has an RO plant.
When we all are on RO water, depending
on sustainability, we will be paying a lot
more.
Other decisions have already been
costing taxpayers money, like the
appointment of an incompetent contractor
on a multimillion-rand pipeline job. And to
save the day, in steps his replacement who
appears very well connected.
Time to change leaders
A NUMBER of the largest
political parties in the
country recently launched
their election manifestos.
As usual, the ANC had a
lot to promise with little to
show for past empty and
broken promises.
They even focused
attention on stopping
corruption, forgetting that
their own president and the
president of our country
has much to answer for.
Then, we had the EFF
Someone in municipal high
can the EFF, and indeed
Blade Nzimande, an ally of
the ANC, add to
communism that the
Russians failed to do?
On Workers’ Day, we had
We must acknowledge
that South Africa has made
significant progress in
many ways since 1994.
The ANC has, however, in
the same period moved
away from the principles of
Nelson Mandela and is
taking South Africa in the
wrong direction.
South Africans face a
choice. We can choose the
status quo, or we can
choose the change that the
DA-run local municipalities
can bring.
DA local governments
will be honest and
responsive to provide
better services and work
towards creating more jobs
and opportunities for all.
The DA will invest in
infrastructure and provide
an environment conducive
to private sector investment
and interact more closely
with business chambers,
small and micro enterprises
and economic development
The DA has a good track
record where they govern in
the Western Cape and
proves that real progress
and change is possible.
The DA will bring change
that will move South Africa
forward again.
This is the change that
will stop corruption, create
bring freedom, fairness and
HUFF AND PUFF: The train engine known as Blackie, after it was restored and put on display in
Cape Town
The tale of Blackie,
SA’s first locomotive
Engine No9 a noble workhorse of note
SERENDIPITY
... with Bev Young
THERE is a sad tale of a noble train engine – a
workhorse of note used in the construction of
the Port Alfred Harbour in 1874.
In the years 1853 and 1855, the Cape Town
Railway and Dock Company was granted
approval, by Act 10 of June 29 1857, to
construct a 92km-long railway between Cape
Town and Wellington. The company appointed
Messrs E&J Pickering as contractors for the
construction of the line.
The company ordered a locomotive from
Scotland for use as construction engine.
The locomotive was built in 1859 by
Hawthorns and Co, Leith, works number 162. It
was a 0-4-0 side-tank locomotive and was built
to run on a 1435mm broad gauge. The
locomotive arrived in Cape Town on September
8 1859 and has the distinction of being the first
locomotive in South Africa.
On July 4 1874, the rebuilt engine No9 was
shipped to the Kowie, to be used in harbour
construction at the Kowie Harbour at Port
Alfred, which was being undertaken by the
Kowie Harbour Improvement Company. It left
Cape Town on board the ship Compage and
arrived at Port Alfred on July 11.
In Port Alfred, engine No9 was officially
named Frontier. Since it was painted black at
the time, it came to be affectionately known as
Blackie. It was reassembled and put to work on
the west bank of the Kowie River, but it derailed
upon reaching the first curve on the existing
rails, which had been laid for ox-drawn wagons
and were not fish-plated together.
It was found that the curves were too sharp
for the locomotive and, during the repairs, the
flanges on the second pair of coupled wheels
were removed.
The engine Blackie was also restricted to a
3.2km/h speed limit. As pressure of work
demanded, it became necessary to regularly
ferry the locomotive from one bank of the Kowie
to the other, until a second locomotive was
obtained in 1877, an 0-4-0 saddle-tank engine
named Aid.
Blackie worked on the Kowie project until
1883, by which time it was completely
unserviceable and abandoned on a siding.
For some bizarre reason, with hectic
construction in the area, Blackie was dragged
to a position along the cliff area and forgotten.
It was later found buried, at a Mr Grogan’s
house in Beach Road.
In December 1897, a big South African
exhibition took place at Grahamstown. Blackie
was repaired, repainted, and railed to that town
to be placed on show, albeit without side-tanks.
When the exhibition drew to a close at the
end of January 1898, the locomotive was placed
in storage in Grahamstown. It remained there
until the newly established South African
Railways decided, in 1913, that it should be
placed on permanent exhibition at Cape Town
S t at i o n .
The engine was repainted in the green Cape
Government Railways livery, railed to Cape
Town and plinthed on the old Cape Town
Station's concourse, at the ends of Platforms 3
and 4.
Answer: I am the “Go to
Gopher” at El Shaddai
Christian Academy. I am the
bus driver, technical advisor
for computers and printers,
media liaison, admissions
and tour coordinator, general
dog’s body and I love it.
Q: What made you get into
that line of work?
A: I loved the school and
wanted to use the gifts and
talents God gave me to be of
help.
Q: Describe the most
memorable experience you
have had in your line of
work.
A: I have had so many but the
most memorable is when I
take children on outreaches
to the retirement homes and
see the joy on the faces of
those we visit.
Q: What do you do to
unwind when you are not
working?
A: I like to walk on the beach
and just soak in the treasure
around me.
Q: What is your motto in
l i fe?
A: Live as Christ intended me
to live.
Q: What makes you happy?
A: Dancing for God.
Q: What makes you angry?
FA C E 2FA C E
... with Amanda Mould
A: Abuse of power and
authority, abuse of children,
women and animals.
Q: What do you think about
the youth of South Africa?
Do you have any advice for
t h e m?
A: We are living in a
fatherless society making our
youth not know their role in
life. The youth need to
discover that they are
fearfully and wonderfully
made and that God has plans
to prosper them and not to
harm them. Seek God and
you will discover who you are
meant to be.
Q: What do you like most
about Port Alfred?
A: It is a little piece of heaven
on earth. I see God’s
handiwork in the creation
around me and the people.
Q: If you could change one
thing about Port Alfred ...
A: That men and women of
integrity and honesty govern
and run our town so that we
can be the town God meant
us to be.
Q: What is your favourite
music of all time?
A: Christian rock – Chris
Tomlin, Michael W Smith,
Mercy Me, Sanctus Real,
Tenth Avenue North, Kari
Jobe, Newsboys and so much
more.
Q: Three wishes for South
A: A nation under God; men
to become the men God
intended them to be; and for
the youth to realise their
potential and work hard for it.
Q: Who is your role model?
A: Jesus Christ.
Q: Who would you take on
the TV show, The Amazing
BUSINESSFORUM
The necessity of
a funeral policy
Burial costs can be as much as R50000
IT IS a natural reaction that
the very last subject most
people would prefer to
discuss is death and funerals.
Death is as much part of
the reality of life as birth, or
any other subject that we
would rather discuss. I can
assure anyone with doubts,
that death is not something
that only strikes “ot h e r
people”. Without trying to
scare my dear readers, I am
just trying to bring our
thoughts back to reality.
Together with other
increases in the cost of
living, funeral costs also
increase from year to
year. The actual cost of a
really ordinary funeral
today can amount to
anything between
R30 000 and R50000.
If I may ask the question:
“How many of us have an
extra R50000 lying around
just in case tragedy might
st rike?”
What will happen if anyone
in our family had to die
today? Will we be able to
raise R50000 in cash within a
day or two? Where will we
start? Will we try and obtain
a loan or overdraft from our
bank or will we run around
begging our relatives and
friends for loans or
contributions to enable us to
lay our loved one to rest in a
dignified manner?
I am certain that not even
one person would like to go
through such trauma during a
time of intense grief. I can
assure you that no funeral
undertaker will attend to the
burial or cremation without
the assurance that they
would be paid in full for their
ser vices.
How do we avoid such an
unpleasant experience during
this unsettling period? The
only easy way out of such a
predicament will be to invest
MONEY
M AT T E R S
... with Nico Human
a small monthly amount into
a funeral policy with a
reputable insurance
company. Please be aware
that there are many
unscrupulous operators in
this field, so it certainly
would be extremely wise to
deal only with a reputable
financial advisor who is
affiliated to a well-known
insurance company.
Very important details to
observe, when taking a
funeral policy, will be to
ascertain that all details of
the people covered by your
funeral policy, such as full
names of each person,
should correlate with their ID
document. Vitally important
is that their ID number and/or
date of birth is recorded
correctly. I have seen
numerous invalid funeral
policies over the years
recording dates of birth of all
insured persons as January 1,
with only the years that differ.
Upon claim stage, certified
copies of the deceased’s ID
document, as well as the
death certificate, should be
lodged together with the
death claim form. I am
certain that people will
most certainly realise
that if details on a
claim differs from the
original details on the
actual funeral policy
contract, it will most
certainly result in
non-payment of such claim.
Do yourself an enormous
favour and check that the
actual details recorded on
your funeral policy are
absolutely accurate. If in any
doubt, consult with a
reputable financial advisor as
a matter of urgency.
integrity and correct financial
advice, feel free to phone me
IT’S going to be laughs all the way at the 43 Air
School Bistro on Saturday May 14 when Flame and
Rob Knowles take to the stage to offer up their
special brand of comedy and song at the “not so”
Royal Variety Performance.
The last show in which the entertaining pair
performed together was a Valentine’s Day
special performance for the SPCA at the Port
Alfred Ski-boat Club.
“We had an idea to do the show at the bistro
and approached food and beverage manager
Mike Flint to see if he was interested,” said
Jeanne Harris Metter, known by her stage
name Flame.
Flint was excited, and immediately
booked Knowles and Flame for the
show on May 14.
“We have a lot of new songs and
new comedy to present,” Knowles
explained.
“It should be a great night, and
Mike [Flint] is putting on some
snacks for the intermission. He
was thinking of soup in a basket,
but that tends to be a bit messy,”
Knowles joked.
The show is planned to
coincide with Queen Elizabeth
II’s 90th birthday celebrations
taking place from May 12 to
May 15.
“The show will include
audience participation, which is
always a good thing,” Flame
said. “And the food will be served
during intermission.”
The show starts at 7pm and tickets
are R90 each.
operator – Alan Tours
in Port Elizabeth.
The cost is rather
high, but we can still
modify things if we get
more numbers. This
cost is based on only
six passengers sharing
three twin/double
rooms on the tour.
I have and am still
getting more options
should you be keen –
just let me know.
I am also planning
May 5,
N E I G H B O U R LY NOTES
TOO good to last, the price of petrol went up by
12c per litre on Wednesday morning. The main
reasons given are a little nebulous. It is said that
the increase is due to fluctuations in the price of
Brent Crude but, as we’ve seen over the past six
months in Neighbourlies, the oil price has
remained pretty stable over the period, dropping
to even below the $40 (R591) per barrel mark.
Another reason given is a strengthening of the
rand against the dollar, but shouldn’t this make
the price lower rather than higher?
Anyway, whatever the reason, motorists have been
hit once again, and this increase will invariably be
passed on to the consumer in terms of higher
prices on the shelves due to an increase in
transportation costs. Diesel users, however, will
have to pay between 1c and 2c per litre less.
ALL the fuss around Ntokozo Qwabe, a leader of
the “Rhodes must fall” campaign and a
freeloading racist who is currently on a full Rhodes
scholarship at Oxford University in the UK, has
highlighted the fact that education does not
necessarily imply intelligence. Having refused to
leave a tip for a waitress at a Cape Town cafe,
which is his right, this young black gentleman
wrote on the bill, “We will give tip when you return
the land”. The strange little fellow has been
castigated, and even been subject to a three-day
ban from Facebook for his racist comments. He
bragged online that they had made the waitress
cry “typical white tears”, and that he was, “unable
to stop smiling because something so black and
wonderful had happened”.
There is also a petition to have Oxford University
revoke his scholarship which, according to a later
Facebook post, he is very amused over. Professing
to know all about the law, the unrepentant
hypocrite is prepared to defend himself in court
(that should be interesting) and is proof positive
that racism isn’t just a “white” thing.
DESPITE all the hype over Easter about the roads
being safer to travel during holiday season, more
than 30 people have succumbed to death through
injury on South African roads over the past long
w e e ke n d .
Transport Minister Dipuo Peters has called for
A SHARK’S TALE: Following rough seas and
Presidential status
for PAHS pupils
SEVERAL Port Alfred High
School pupils recently received
their bronze President’s Award
for Youth Empowerment.
The award programme
identifies development as one
of the cornerstones of
empowerment and has proven
itself to be a powerful
developmental tool for young
people. Ultimately the
programme focuses on how
pupils grow and cultivate a
sense of self-development.
The criteria for the awards
programme, in conjunction
with mentorship with the
award leaders, are that pupils
need to advocate skills
development, physical
recreation, community service
and an adventurous journey.
The involvement of the youth
in these activities changes
their perception of themselves
and their world.
The programme also teaches
them about vital issues such
as health, political and social
life as well as the environment.
Completion of the
programme also equips the
individual for further training
and fulfilling work. Both
tertiary institutions and
workplaces increasingly see
value in the award programme.
According to the President’s
Award programme, “As the
A sedentary bird
THIS week we are going to
take a walk into the forest in
order to “visit” our bird of the
week, the grey cuckooshrike.
This beautiful bird is a fairly
common resident and is still
found fairly regularly in the
right habitat. It lives in forests
and wooded streams –
particularly where the
trees are larger and the
canopy is a bit more
open.
One can usually find
it where there is plenty
of lichen and “Old
Man’s Beard” hanging
from the higher dead branches,
where it makes a cup-shaped
nest out of lichen to blend in
with the surroundings. In our
area, I have seen it at the
Alexandria forest (Woody Cape
section of Addo) and Waters
Meeting nature reserve, among
other places.
It is a medium-sized bird,
immediately recognised by its
uniform blue-grey coloration.
The black eye and beak stand
out against these soft hues.
The male and female are
similar in appearance, the only
difference being the males are
LET’S
CHIRP
... with Tim Cockcroft
slightly darker on the “lores” –
that is, the area between the
front of the eye and the base of
the bill.
I have found this bird quite
sedentary, meaning it stays in
its preferred spot pretty much
permanently. I have found them
in almost the same tree (or
patch of trees) time after time.
The grey cuckooshrike feeds
on caterpillars and other
insects, which it finds by
creeping and clumsily flapping
its way among the branches,
peering around and then
making short flights to grab its
juicy snack, before returning to
the perch to devour it.
It is always on the
move, albeit not very
quickly, and if you
happen to catch a
glimpse of it through the
forest foliage, all you
need to do is stick
around and wait. It will
eventually come and perch in
the open.
Well, that’s all for this week,
folks. Please remember I am
available for guided birding
tours in and around our area. I
can be reached at t i m w c ro f t @
gmail.com or 072-314-0069.
Until next time, happy birding!
TURNING IT INTO COMPOST
By now, residents will have noticed that garden
refuse containers have slowly but surely been
doing a disappearing act of their own around
Grahamstown, leaving local homeowners and
gardeners confused as to what to do with their
garden refuse, other than call in garden
services firms.
Enter Jeanine Rado, of Complete Compost.
She told me last week that Complete
Compost accepts all organic matter (garden
refuse), which they convert into compost.
The compost is then sold in bags or loose at
their premises, as well as potting and top soil.
“We aim to eventually recycle all of
G r a h a m st o w n ’s organic matter.”
Complete Compost is situated next to the old
Grahamstown Engineering site off Cradock
Road – enter the industrial area, turn left at the
T-junction and they are at the third gate on the
right, and can be contacted on 074-897-2942.
G R A H A M STO W N ’S GOT TALENT
AGENTS FOR THIS AND THAT
Five decades ago, Grahamstown estate agents
and attorneys’ firms were agents for a variety of
insurance companies and building societies.
Most of them are no longer in existence.
Digby & Francis on Church Square were
agents for Chubb Lock & Safe, Walpamur
Paints, National Venetian Blinds and Saambou
Building Society. The owner of Digby & Francis
in the 1960s was RK Wingfield-Digby, and in
later years, Chris Vandoros.
Stanley J Dold Auctioneers at 43 High Street
were agents for Natal Building Society, under
the ownership of Maurice Dold in the ’60s, and
later John van Wijk who, some years later,
moved to the Garden Route area.
FACING THE TRAFFIC
A local resident takes umbrage with people who
run or walk with their backs to oncoming traffic,
in some cases wearing earphones.
He writes: “I find it, as a motorist and cyclist,
extremely annoying and thoughtless of those
who transgress common sense.”
He would like to warn them of the danger of
such behaviour.
GOOD FINISH
Well done to Grahamstown athlete Malibongwe
Mbelu of Run/Walk for Life Athletics Club on
finishing an amazing 12th overall out of 575
finishers at the recent Sportsmans Warehouse
15km road race in Port Elizabeth.
The 43-year-old Mbelu completed the race in
56 minutes 35 seconds.
RUGBY GALORE
It’s a derby day of huge proportions in
Grahamstown on Saturday May 7 when the
SHOPPING AND SAVING
The following slogans appeared in a
Grahamstown publication in the mid-’60s:
Parisian Bazaars: “Where everybody buys
everything for cash and really saves”.
You may remember that PB Bazaars was one
of the early supermarkets in town, on the corner
of High and Hill Streets, where Truworths is
t o d ay.
LOOKING RUBBISHY
Two or three weeks ago I wrote about the large
mound of garden refuse dumped at the
entrance to the lane between Hillsview Road
and Beadle Street in Sunnyside.
A resident in the area is unhappy about the
situation and says people cut and trim trees in
their gardens and dump it there.
“And it’s weeks before it is removed,” she
says. But that’s not all.
Another garden refuse dump is developing
about 100m further up the road.
It seems there are some people who have
absolutely no pride in their neighbourhoods.
TO THE WATERS OF ENGLAND
Congratulations to Caitlin Little of Diocesan
School for Girls, who was selected for the SA
Schools’ Rowing Union Under 17 team that left
for England last week to take part in various
GROOVY IN A CAN
Back in the late ’60s/early ’70s, Groovy fizzy
soft drinks came in cans, probably one of the
first, if not the very first, soft drink to be sold in
cans in South Africa. Who remembers them?
Talking about cans, I still have (I’m not sure
why) a can of Castle Lager Beer (still full)
purchased in Hout Bay, Cape Town, in August
1965, while on holiday there.
The can is a bit rusty these days, and I’m
wondering if the 51-year-old contents might also
taste a bit rusty! Also, I wonder what that can of
beer cost back in the ’60s.
Rodney Austin with 55, closely followed by Brian
Then the weather changed and winter showed
up with temperatures of 11-17° C being recorded.
Last Saturday the first round of the ladies’
Colleen Timm and men’s Moore Shield was played
at Port Alfred BC. Kenton ladies won this round but
the men lost theirs. Two more rounds still to play.
last Saturday.
Forty-five riders from across the
country attended the event, which
showcased bikes from pre-1965 to
more recent scramblers pre-1996.
Some riders brought more than one
bike to ride in several classes.
One of the organisers, Rob Wicks of
held the event in Bathurst in 2012.
“The guys like the course – it’s one
of the only natural grass courses in the
Wicks and fellow organiser Dave
Last Tuesday this week we played our Megabucks
competition with Siggie Rohrs’s team of Judy
Hunter, Ronnie Smith and Flame Metter defeating
Bob Ford’s team 8 / +11.
In the runner-up spot, Rodney Gradwell’s team
defeated Harold Bodill’s team 8 / +8. The winners
shared the “big bucks” that we give away on
Megabucks competition. The rest of the games on
the day all went to a one shot difference.
Last Thursday we played snowball competition
and winner on the day was John Hubbard’s team
of Mike Pfotenhauer and Jackie Watson who
defeated Mike Tomlinson’s team of trips.
The score for this competition is irrelevant with
four ends being drawn. The score of seven was
drawn and the Hubbard team were the only team
to match this score so they shared the small kitty
that is not being given a chance to grow. It is
being won almost every week.
September. Well done
to the few players who
The entry list for the
on the board so please
The closing date for
that from May 1 our starting times reverted to the
winter times. Start to play bowls at 1.45pm so your
tabs are required to be in by 1.30pm.
Friday night’s Round 7 of the Night Bowls
competition ended up being postponed due to
weather conditions. We had to make a decision by
3pm for various reasons so people can make their
arrangements and by 6pm that evening some
thought that we had made the wrong decision.
But between 7 and 7.30pm it turned out that the
convenors had made the correct decision, anyway
the weather was really miserable. So the next
round will be played on Friday May 13 and the final
will move out by one week.
On Saturday the three coastal clubs travelled to
Port Alfred Club for the first round of the Colleen
Timm/Moore Shields competitions. Kenton ladies
ended a very good day ending with a full house
four points and Sh/prof of 28, in second place was
Port Alfred with one point and shot profit of -7
while Kowie want it a day to be forgotten on one
point and -21 shot profit.
The men’s teams of Kowie had a very good day
with two wins for a four point and 13 shot profit to
win the day. Port Alfred had two points with -4
shot profit and Kenton came in next with zero
points and shot profit of -9. This competition
consists of four rounds through the year.
We played “fun bowls” on Freedom Day and on
Monday, another public holiday, we played another
“fun day” bowls with a braai in the afternoon
because we had no bowls at our club on Saturday.
I will report on the two fun days in the next issue.
organisers and referees
in having a smooth
championship.
The A section dates,
which will be in August,
will be announced in
due course.
There are still a few
openings for players
who would like to go to
East London on June 12
for a fun day to be
played with St Andrews
Club.
We wish Anne
Young Mcgregor snaps up
longboard U14 champion title
LOUISE CARTER
AFTER three consecutive
years of competing in the
South African Longboard
Championships, local junior
star Kye Macgregor has
finally brought the under-14
champion title home.
Kye, his father, David, and
brother, Cuan, have each
won titles in their respective
divisions and have
established the Macgregor
clan as not only champions
on the shortboard, but
masters of the old-school
longboard.
Longboard surfing differs
significantly as it requires a
surfer to combine a surfing
technique made popular in
the ’60s with modern styles.
For a longboard surfer, the
judges look at a surfer’s
ability to “wa l k ” across the
board, in a criss-cross
manner to the front – this is
called a hang-ten, or a
hang-five depending on
va r i at i o n s .
The championships took
place in the cold Mossel Bay
water at the challenging
Inner Pool in an area known
for its rocks, powerful waves
and great white sharks.
Young Kye, however, is no
stranger to the area having
previously surfed there for
Dave won last year and
Kye’s older brother Cuan,
who doubled up as contest
a few years back.
This year Cuan performed
well overall in the
competition, placing ninth in
the open division.
“The weekend is one of the
highlights of the year for my
family. Kye is still not too big
to cuddle with me in the
back of my van after a long
day of surfing, ” Dave said.
Dave praised Kye’s
sponsor Billabong for their
support, team manager
Grant Beck, the EP team,
family, and Des Sawyer. As
far as Kye goes, although he
focuses on shortboard, he
believes junior longboarding
is doing well in South Africa.
V I CTO R ’S FINISH: Bearing the number one and
first across the finish line in the Siza Vitality
Half Marathon last Saturday was accomplished
East London runner Lusapho April
April, Xiniwe win big in Siza Vitality Half Marathon
TOP WOMAN: Zintle Xiniwe of Cape
Town was first woman home in the Siza
Vitality Half Marathon on Saturday
JON HOUZET
WET and cold
weather did not
deter nearly 500
runners taking part
in the second
annual Siza Vitality Half Marathon
in Port Alfred last Saturday.
The race, which started and
ended at Port Alfred High School,
drew 456 runners – more than
double the number of participants
of the inaugural race.
It also drew top marathon
runner Lusapho April, who came
first in 1:06:06, beating last year’s
winner Melikhaya Frans of
Uitenhage by 14 seconds, and
also shaving two minutes off
Fr a n s ’s winning time last year.
East London-based April,
who has established a name
for himself in overseas
marathons, received
raucous cheers when he
approached the finish-line.
In third place was last year’s
runner-up, Chabeli Nyedimane of
B l o e m fo n t e i n .
With stronger competition
among the top runners this year,
another favourite last year’s
third-placed George Ntshiliza of
Port Elizabeth, finished seventh.
Among the women, Zintle
Xiniwe of Cape Town came first in
1:20:49, followed by Bulelwa
Simae in 1:21:11 and Ntombesintu
Mfunzi in third place at 1:22:07.
Xiniwe described it as a good
race, not at all difficult.
“But I ran a bad time today. I
used to run a half marathon in 73
or 74 minutes. Today I ran 80,”
she said.
Among the Ndlambe runners,
the top three finishers were
Phumzile Nelo (1:19:04), Sizakele
Dayimani (1:19:29) and Zandisile
Dzudzudzu (1:19:43) – who were
also the top three last year – but
with Nelo and Dzudzudzu
‘Final results will be
e-mailed to us today
[Tuesday] and we
will call the winners
and pay them’
switching places this year.
First Ndlambe veteran home
was Carriot Galela, 47, followed
closely by his brother Elvis Galela
of Port Elizabeth, who was also
the first runner home in the 60-69
categor y.
This year’s event included a
5km fun run, complete with prize
money for the top three finishers,
but no times were kept.
The occasion was a festive
event, with at least two runners,
local DJ Kalani and Hanlie van
der Westhuizen of Despatch
celebrating their birthdays on
race day.
“It’s exciting. I’m so impressed
we’ve more than doubled the
numbers from last year,” Siza
Vitality founder and chairman
Xolani Masiza said.
“We ’re growing from strength
to strength. Even with the rain we
got the entrants. We even got
people from Mpumalanga and
two ladies from the Western
Cape,” he said.
The top three finishers –
overall among men and women –
received cash prizes of R10000
(first), R5000 (second), R3000
(third), R1000 (fourth) and R500
(fifth). As well as additional
prizes for age-group categories,
there was also an incentive for
local runners, with cash prizes of
R1 500 for first, R1 000 for second
and R750 for third – for both men
and women in the open and
veteran categories.
But Galela told TotT on Monday
he had not received his prize
money. TotT asked Masiza and
Siza Vitality CEO Noluthando Vithi
to comment on his claims.
Vithi assured that the veterans
would still get their prizes. “The
final results will be e-mailed to us
today [Tuesday] and we will call
the winners and pay them
a c c o r d i n g l y, ” she said.

À
AND THEY’RE OFF: The start of the Siza Vitality 5km fun run at Port Alfred High
School on Saturday drew an appreciative field of runners, who are helping to
grow the event
