The apprenticeship consists of a total of 6,300<br />
hours, which is supplemented by 144 hours of apprenticeship<br />
class training per year, totaling 432 hours.<br />
Apprentices also donate their time to help out on<br />
multiple roofing projects that help non-profit entities<br />
throughout the South Bend region with their roofing<br />
issues and needs. The program is registered with Helmets<br />
to Hardhats and the U.S. Department of Veterans<br />
Affairs, so veterans can use their GI Bill benefits<br />
during their apprenticeship.<br />
Local 23 journeypersons benefit from the program as<br />
well. Journeyman upgrade training is available, and all<br />
courses are registered with IVY Tech Community College,<br />
so participants receive college credit at no cost once<br />
each course is completed. The courses that are provided<br />

The journeyman upgrades are fairly new to the program—they<br />
were introduced in 2013. Other recent changes<br />
to the program include first aid/CPR training and<br />
improved record-keeping programs for training and<br />
hourly credits. Instructors are also actively recruiting new<br />
