Chief Executive’s Report
Harbour Sport has been going from strength to strength in community development
leadership over the last year with ever increasing staff capability, strong community
influence and innovative projects and events at the fore.
Times continue to be trying for sports organisations whether it be financial, capability,
capacity, coaches, volunteers, innovation or competition for the leisure dollar. Harbour
Sport is not unaffected by restraints across the economy but have prioritised diversity
of income generation and innovation in sport to ensure we, as an organisation in
sports leadership, are in a position to support our stakeholders and the local Harbour
community in the years to come.
“Active Teens programme
was revamped and
refocused into 12 week
blocks. In the most recent
block the teens lost a
total of 18.3kgs body fat,
9.8kgs of body weight
and an 85% improvement
in fitness overall”.
New programmes and events developed this year include the MudRush pilot which was
held in December 2012 at Long Bay primary as a trial. Feedback was hugely positive
and the actual event held in September 2013 stood out as innovative and commercially
sound for Harbour Sport and its partners.
Active Teens programme was revamped and refocused into 12 week blocks. In the most
recent block the teens lost a total of 18.3kgs body fat, 9.8kgs of body weight and an 85%
improvement in fitness overall. Two boys really stood out, one went from an obese BMI
and is now in the overweight category and the other boy was exceptional, going from
obese to now being a healthy weight. He lost 7.9kgs of body fat and 23.6cms from his
girth measurements, originally this boy was very shy and not interested in exercise or
sport. He is now noticeably more confident and is going to join the gym and start boxing.
The SportsPasifik Project is aimed at increasing participation in sport and recreation.
Key aspects of the project include Equipped which is a project targeting Pacific Teen
Girls aged 13-17 years aimed to improve their skills and ability to sustain activity
through mentoring, fitness, nutrition and sports sessions. Twenty one Pacific island girls
are actively involved. PolySports is a holiday programme providing opportunities for
Pacific children aged 5-12years to be active and engaged in physical activity and sport
during their school holidays. A total of 82 children participated during the term 1 and 2
school holidays.
Club Workshops have had a makeover with new topics and there is a small charge for
attendance. “Six keys to a Great Club” workshop was a great success as it introduced
clubs to the self-assessment process. It was followed by a WOF workshop where
clubs completed the WOF with Harbour Sport’s support and the Funding Application
workshop where Lion Foundation presented to assist clubs to complete effective
applications. Other RSTS are replicating these workshops.
Our Bike projects have demonstrated excellent leadership and influence. These projects
are as diverse as assisting in developing bike tracks, running bikes in kindy programmes
through to leading guided rides for older adults and teaching Korean women to ride
bikes.
A new Side Line Behaviour project with GACU has been developed as a result of
requests for support from a number of RSOs due to the increase of inappropriate side
line behaviour. We have Partnership Agreements signed with three RSOs, football,
netball and rugby and are taking the six nominated schools and clubs through a process
of culture and values development which will see us pilot the model at the start of the
2014 season. The alignment of everyone involved, club/school, coaches, parents and
players along with the educational elements are the key differences that we hope will
make the model a success.
Harbour Sport has managed a full integration of a dedicated Customer Relationship
Management System (CRM). Harbour Sport now has a very clear overview of our
relationships and the work that we are undertaking in our community.
