A watchable wildlife area, featuring stream-riparian
and wetland habitats, is located in Reilly
Canyon, which is accessed further west on Highway
12. The canyon also has one of the world's
best exposures of the K-T geological boundary that
marks the extinction of most life forms, including
dinosaurs, 65 million years ago.
The south shore has trails, a summer campground,
and a boat ramp. The 800-acre lake is
used for motorized boating, non-wake watercraft,
and water and jet skiing. Boat, shore, and ice fishing
are very popular, and hunting is permitted on
a seasonal basis (state licenses are required).
Trinidad Lake State Park is managed by Colorado
Parks and Wildlife through a partnership
with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. The
USACE has a free exhibit about the dam, constructed
in 1978, in their office at the intersection
of the dam road and Highway 12.

When you’re done in Trinidad, continue heading
west on Highway 12 up into the mountains to
reach Monument Lake, 37 miles west of Trinidad.
