Kieffer offers outreach, information and
referral services to seniors in the DeWitt,
Fayetteville and Manlius areas. For more

Free presentation on peacetime draft Dec. 4
While the word “draft” can be used in
relation to a poorly insulated home or
professional sports teams, until 1973
most people associated the word draft
with compulsory military service. Well,
this is the “draft” that will be the focus
of an upcoming event based on a book by
Manlius, N.Y. resident Mel Rubenstein.
The Peacetime Draft During the Cold
War, a presentation by Mel and Mady
Rubenstein, will be given on Sunday, Dec. 4
at 1 p.m. at the JCC of Syracuse. The
event is free and open to the public. Light
refreshments will be served.
Rubenstein’s book, The Peacetime
Draft During the Cold War (2009), is a
compilation of contributed stories by local
men about their military service during the
period between the Korean and Vietnam
wars. The Dec. 4 presentation will delve
into many of the book’s stories with many
historical photos of the time. Also, several

transportation or
other services? The
JCC’s Neighborhood Advisor can help.
Sharon Kieffer, the JCC’s Neighborhood
Advisor, assists seniors age 60 and older in
the DeWitt, Fayetteville and Manlius areas
with outreach, information and referral
services so that they can remain living
independently in their homes. There is no
cost for this service, however donations
are accepted and appreciated. Kieffer has
many years of experience providing case
management services in the healthcare and
long-term care fields.
The Neighborhood Advisor program is
part of the Onondaga County Department
of Adult & Long Term Care Services.
