If you’ve ever wanted to make our world a
little greener—whether right here in New
York or in a desert region such as Israel—
the Sam Pomeranz Jewish Community
Center of Syracuse can help. And, you
don’t have to travel far to make it happen.
The JCC of Syracuse recently kicked off
a fundraiser to have trees planted here in
the United States and at various locations
around the world such as Israel, Africa
and Asia. Those looking to support this
initiative may purchase a “Plant a Tree”
card from the JCC. Then simply go online
according to the instructions on the card
to have a tree planted at one of more than
35 reforestation sites around the world.
Each card costs $18 or you can buy five and
get one free.
“Plant a Tree” cards may be purchased
over the phone or in person from the
JCC’s main entrance receptionist, Jerome
and Phyllis Charney Early Childhood
Development Program or Neulander
Family Sports & Fitness Center. Donors
may choose to have their tree planting
donation benefit the JCC’s After
School Program, Early Childhood
Development Program, Sports &
Fitness Center, PJ Library in CNY or
Seniors Department. Tree donations
also may be designated as a tribute in
honor or memory of someone special.
“We’re really pleased to be rolling
out this type of fundraiser,” said JCC
of Syracuse Executive Director Marci
Erlebacher. It’s a first for us and a
great way for our supporters to help
out their chosen JCC program while
making a positive impact on the
environment.”
As a dry desert region, Israel has
limited trees and no natural forests.
Thus all forests must be handplanted,
which Israel has done quite
successfully. In less than 60 years Israel
has become one of only two countries
with a net gain in its number of trees.
