315-445-2360 | www.jccsyr.org Free JCC teen daytrip December 11 Local teenagers looking to explore and celebrate their Jewish heritage will have an opportunity to do just that during an upcoming road trip to Philadelphia. The Sam Pomeranz Jewish Community Center of Syracuse, in collaboration with area synagogues, will host a “JCC Teen Initiative” excursion for students in grades 8-12 to the National Museum of American Jewish History on Sunday, Dec. 11, 2016. The bus will depart at 8 a.m. from the JCC of Syracuse and return to the JCC around 10:30 p.m. This free outing includes roundtrip travel, museum admission, a guided tour and a kosher lunch and dinner. There are only 35 spots available on a first come, first served basis. The registration form is available from the JCC by calling 315-445- 2360 or visiting www.jccsyr.org. The “JCC Teen Initiative” daytrip is sponsored by the Joseph Elman Family Fund for Holocaust Studies at the Jewish Community Foundation of Central New York. “We are very excited to coordinate this trip and give local teens a chance to connect with the history of Jews in America,” said Marci Erlebacher, JCC PJ LIBRARY IN CNY – A JEWISH COMMUNITY PARTNERSHIP of Syracuse executive director. “With so much to do and see at the museum, this is a wonderful opportunity for our young people to appreciate who they are and discover their place in the Jewish- American experience.” Leading the “JCC Teen Initiative” excursion and traveling with the teens will be the JCC’s Mick Hagan, director of children and teen services. Hagan heads up a number of JCC teen programs throughout the year, including summer camps and the annual high school Battle of the Bands held each January. The National Museum of American Jewish History, located on Independence Mall in Philadelphia, Pa., was established in 1976 and is the only museum in the nation dedicated exclusively to exploring and interpreting the American Jewish experience. With more than 25,000 objects, the museum is the repository of the largest collection of Jewish Americana in the world. However there is a philosophical dimension as well. This idea may be found in the manner that the Chanukah lights are lit each night. On the first night of Chanukah we begin with one candle and add another each successive night. On the last night of Chanukah, eight candles are lit. This process is described in the Talmud as maalin meen hakodesh vein moreedein, we strive to ascend in holiness and not descend. This idea is very important in our daily lives. Additionally, it is an important teaching tool for our children. In general, Judaism frowns upon the status quo. In our lives, we are expected to grow in some way every day. Some growth may be remarkable while at times in very small increments. Our job is to look at ourselves daily and attempt to build upon our past experiences and forge ahead with a clear resolve to continue growing. This growth may be in many forms, religious observance, family relationships, character building, maturation and the list goes on. This year when we see the glow of the candles each night of Chanukah may they be a source of inspiration and motivation to all of us that each day brings the chance to make ourselves a little better, kinder and closer to our Jewish roots. Early bird registration starts February 1, 2017 Open to current JCC members. Program Hours Monday–Friday 7 am – 6 pm The 2016-2017 school year is currently underway and runs through June. There are still some spaces left in our 3- and 4-year old programs. If you are interested in enrolling your child for this year, please contact the Early Childhood Director at 315-445-2040, ext. 122, to set up a tour. Early registration for the upcoming 2017-2018 school year begins February 1, 2017. We will send current Early Childhood families and JCC members registration packets at the end of January. If you are currently not a member of the JCC and would like to take advantage of early registration, you may join the JCC in February. Enrolling your child early will guarantee classroom placement. Registration opens to the public on March 1, 2017. For each new school year your completed enrollment paperwork along with the $25 registration fee must be submitted. Additional enrollment paperwork will be sent home in May and must be returned no later than June 14, 2017. HOW TO REGISTER Age groups served Infant — 6 weeks – 8 months • Must be six weeks old by Sept. 5, 2017 Toddler — 18 months – 36 months • Must be 18 months by Sept. 5, 2017 Preschool • Must be age 3 by Dec. 1, 2017 Pre-Kindergarten • Must be age 4 by Dec. 1, 2017 Withdrawals, changes Enrollment in ECDP is a commitment to our 10-month school year which consists of three sessions: September–November, December– February and March–June. Any program withdrawals or enrollment changes must be made 30 days before the start of a session.
