supervisor to reflect recent research<br />

indicating a need for a stronger focus on<br />

improving principal performance. Hear<br />

what the University of Washington Center<br />

for Educational Leadership is <strong>learning</strong><br />

about this role and also hear from a central<br />

office leader about this effort in her district.<br />

Develop a deeper understanding of how to<br />

balance the roles of coach and supervisor,<br />

how to address issues of principal<br />

supervisor span of control, and ways that<br />

principal supervisors can be vital central<br />

office leaders.<br />

Stephen Fink is the<br />

executive director of the<br />

University of Washington<br />

Center for Educational<br />

Leadership (CEL),<br />

and affiliate associate<br />

professor of educational<br />

leadership and policy<br />

studies in the University<br />

of Washington College of Education. He has<br />

worked extensively with school and district<br />

leaders on improving the quality of instructional<br />

leadership. Prior to coming to the University of<br />

Washington, he spent 12 years as an assistant<br />

superintendent in the Edmonds School District,<br />

and was a principal and special education<br />

teacher in Idaho and Los Angeles. Fink is the<br />

co-author with Anneke Markholt of Leading<br />

for Instructional Improvement: How Successful<br />

Leaders Develop Teaching and Learning Expertise<br />

(Jossey-Bass, 2011).<br />

Max Silverman is the<br />

associate director of the<br />

Center for Educational<br />

Leadership (CEL) at the<br />

University of Washington.<br />

Silverman is a former<br />

principal and central<br />

office leader who leads<br />

CEL’s work focused on<br />

district leadership. In this role, Silverman has<br />

worked closely with the Bill & Melinda Gates<br />

Foundation and a number of districts including<br />

Seattle, Shelby County (TN), and Minneapolis.<br />

Susanne Jerde, Highline Public Schools,<br />

Burien, WA,<br />

Susanne Jerde is the<br />

chief academic officer of<br />

Highline Public Schools.<br />

She began her teaching<br />

career in Highline in<br />

1984, and since then has<br />

served as an elementary<br />

school principal, director<br />

of Title 1/LAP/ELL, and<br />

executive director supervising schools K-12.<br />

Jerde holds a superintendent’s certificate from<br />

Seattle University, a master’s from Seattle Pacific<br />

University, and a bachelors in elementary<br />

education from Central Washington University.<br />

practice from his organization’s network<br />

of United Kingdom and international<br />

schools drawn from recent work with the<br />

UK government using the Standard for<br />

Teachers’ PD.<br />

David Weston, Teacher Development Trust,<br />

London, England,<br />

david.weston@tdtrust.org; @informed_edu<br />

David Weston is the founder and chief executive<br />

of the Teacher Development Trust, and the<br />

chair of the United Kingdom Department for<br />

Education’s Teacher Development Expert Group.<br />

He is a school governor and a former secondary<br />

math and physics teacher. Weston speaks and<br />

writes frequently for education sector and<br />

national media and has had a number of radio<br />

and TV appearances on the subject of teaching,<br />

teacher development, and LGBT issues.<br />
