The project will serve teens and young adults attending alternative schools, General Equivalency Degree (GED)<br />
classes, and after-school programs in underserved Chicago neighborhoods.<br />
MINDPOP<br />
$30,000 Austin, TX<br />
To support Emerging Teaching Artists, a professional development project. Teaching artists will learn effective<br />
strategies <strong>for</strong> teaching art in schools and community settings, followed by mentoring with a master teacher,<br />
classroom experience, and job placement. Teaching artists who complete <strong>the</strong> training are invited to attend<br />
ongoing advanced professional development program, FLASHDRIVE and network with organizations, funders,<br />
and o<strong>the</strong>r working artists and teaching artists.<br />
MacPhail Center <strong>for</strong> Music (aka N/A)<br />
$10,000 Minneapolis, MN<br />
To support <strong>the</strong> ECM (Early Childhood Music) Online program. Professional teaching artists will use video<br />
conferencing to deliver music instruction to students in early childhood classes in rural Minnesota communities<br />
and small cities. A MacPhail teaching artist will make one in-person visit to each classroom and <strong>the</strong> program<br />
includes training teachers to integrate music into <strong>the</strong>ir classroom teaching. Online School Partnerships will<br />
provide access to specialized music instruction that is o<strong>the</strong>rwise not available to towns and cities outside major<br />
metropolitan areas and enhance existing public school music programs.<br />
Manhattan School of Music<br />
$20,000 New York, NY<br />
To support Camp MSM, a residential vocal and instrumental music summer camp. Set on <strong>the</strong> Manhattan School<br />
of Music conservatory campus in New York City, and offering a residential option, <strong>the</strong> Camp provides intensive<br />
instruction in musical <strong>the</strong>ater and instrumental music to middle school and high school students. Each student<br />
receives a private lesson each week in <strong>the</strong>ir primary instrument and also participates in ensembles such as flute<br />
choir, guitar ensemble, and Latin jazz band. Students choose from elective classes such as improvisation,<br />
conducting, audition techniques, chamber music, songwriting, composition, and advanced music history.<br />
Instrumental majors participate in both large and small ensembles and vocal majors prepare two fully staged<br />
<strong>the</strong>atrical productions with costumes and scenery.<br />
Marwen Foundation, Inc. (aka Marwen)<br />
$20,000 Chicago, IL<br />
To support <strong>the</strong> Marwen Studio, a free program which offers out-of-school visual arts courses. Practicing artists<br />
design and teach sequential, hands-on art-making courses in a range of disciplines, including visual arts, design<br />
arts, media arts, and mixed media. Project partners include HIVE Chicago, <strong>the</strong> University of Chicago, and <strong>the</strong><br />
Chicago Architecture Foundation.<br />
Massachusetts College of Art and Design<br />
$10,000 Boston, MA<br />
To support <strong>the</strong> Summer Studios Youth Program, a visual arts immersion experience <strong>for</strong> high school students.<br />
Taught by local artists and art educators, students will have a foundation in both 2D and 3D art-making.<br />
Students also will have <strong>the</strong> option to participate in an elective studio from <strong>the</strong> following areas: painting from<br />
observation, graphic design, fashion design, photography, jewelry and metalsmithing, and illustration. Students<br />
will develop critical thinking skills through <strong>the</strong> study of art history and gallery visits.<br />
