$30,000 Los Angeles, CA<br />

To support <strong>the</strong> presentation of <strong>the</strong> 30th annual International Association of Blacks in Dance (IABD) conference in<br />

Los Angeles, and <strong>the</strong> presentation of dance works on <strong>the</strong> company. The 2018 IABD conference is an educational<br />

engagement and outreach event that brings toge<strong>the</strong>r students from across <strong>the</strong> world to experience dance<br />

per<strong>for</strong>mances, classes, and workshops with leaders in <strong>the</strong> field. The company will host <strong>the</strong> conference in Los<br />

Angeles. In addition, choreographers Lula Washington and Tamica Washington-Miller will set works on <strong>the</strong><br />

company to be per<strong>for</strong>med at <strong>the</strong> conference.<br />

Miami City Ballet, Inc. (aka Mimi City Ballet)<br />

$60,000 Miami Beach, FL<br />

To support <strong>the</strong> creation and presentation of <strong>the</strong> "The Fairy's Kiss" by choreographer Alexei Ratmansky. Former<br />

artistic director of <strong>the</strong> Bolshoi Ballet and current Artist-in-Residence at American Ballet Theatre, Ratmansky will<br />

set <strong>the</strong> ballet to Igor Stravinsky's score of <strong>the</strong> same name. The ballet will feature a large cast of 20 to 30 dancers,<br />

and original costume and set design that will brea<strong>the</strong> new life into a classical ballet that links literature, music,<br />

and design to dance. Accompanied by a live orchestra, <strong>the</strong> work will premiere at three per<strong>for</strong>ming arts centers in<br />

South Florida: <strong>the</strong> Adrienne Arsht Center in Miami, Broward Center in Fort Lauderdale, and Kravis Center in<br />

West Palm Beach.<br />

Milwaukee Ballet Company, Inc. (aka Milwaukee Ballet)<br />

$10,000 Milwaukee, WI<br />

To support <strong>the</strong> creation and presentation of a new work by Milwaukee Ballet dancer and Choreographer-in-<br />

Residence Timothy O'Donnell. The ballet will feature <strong>the</strong> male Milwaukee Ballet company dancers and deal with<br />

<strong>the</strong> subject of male depression. The work will be per<strong>for</strong>med as part of a mixed repertory bill that includes "La<br />

Sylphide," a ballet that will showcase <strong>the</strong> female dancers of <strong>the</strong> company. Presented at <strong>the</strong> Marcus Center <strong>for</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> Per<strong>for</strong>ming <strong>Arts</strong> in Milwaukee, <strong>the</strong> new ballet will be set to music by composer Ezio Bosso, per<strong>for</strong>med live by<br />

<strong>the</strong> Milwaukee Ballet Orchestra.<br />

Mixed Bag Productions (aka Sara Shelton Mann)<br />

$10,000 San Francisco, CA<br />

To support <strong>the</strong> creation and presentation of a new evening-length piece, "The Invitation," by Artistic Director<br />

Sara Shelton Mann. Made up of two intertwined duets, Mann will return to some earlier choreographic<br />

techniques to create <strong>the</strong> movement <strong>for</strong> this work-that of phrasing and complicated rhythms-placed within new<br />

research of how she may speak to <strong>the</strong> fast-paced in<strong>for</strong>mation that surrounds us every day. The basic premise of<br />

<strong>the</strong> piece is simple: dancing <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> joy of it; dancing as <strong>the</strong> meaning in itself and <strong>the</strong> touch it explores. "The<br />

Invitation" will premiere at Joe Goode Annex in <strong>the</strong> Mission Neighborhood of San Francisco.<br />

Monica Bill Barnes & Company (aka Monica Bill Barnes & Company)<br />

$20,000 New York, NY<br />

To support <strong>the</strong> creation and presentation of "The Museum Workout." Audiences will participate in a guided<br />

exercise tour of an art museum, following <strong>the</strong> choreographed movement of Monica Bill Barnes and her long<br />

time dancing partner Anna Bass. Created in collaboration with artist and author Maira Kalman, "The Museum<br />

Workout" changes <strong>the</strong> way audiences experience <strong>the</strong>ir time in an art museum. Barnes and Bass will take<br />

participants jogging through <strong>the</strong> museum and stop in front of select pieces to per<strong>for</strong>m repetitive exercises.<br />

Kalman will curate <strong>the</strong> tour and her recorded voice narrates <strong>the</strong> audience's experience. The work will offer a<br />

gentle disruption to <strong>the</strong> normally contained museum environment, invigorating participants by creating a new<br />

physical relationship with <strong>the</strong> art of <strong>the</strong> ages. "The Museum Workout" will premiere at The Metropolitan<br />

Museum of Art in New York City.<br />
