JANUARY 2017
Happy New Year! I hope you had a wonderful
festive break. After a much needed rest, we are
back, refreshed, and perhaps like many of you,
have eaten way too many mince pies!
I’d also like to take the time to announce my own
engagement to my new fiancé Sam Hunt, he has
I am now on my normal “Post-Christmas Health
differently. A few months back I discovered LRG
Indian cooking...
BY AWARD WINNING
CHEF ABDUS SHAHID
Prep Time
30 mins
Cooking Time:
15 mins
Serves 4
USE OIL SPARINGLY...
Just a splash is needed. Using non-stick cookware can
help you to limit the use of oil when cooking curries.
CUT DOWN ON FAT...
If trying to cut down the fat content of your meal,
change the menu and cook Indian dishes and breads
that require no frying.
TRY TANDOORI...
Grill, boil, steam and bake instead of frying where
possible. Tandoori grilling is the best form of cooking
where minimal or no oil is used and the intense heat
cooks the food quickly, sealing in all the nutrients.
TRY OUR CHICKEN TANDOORI...
This low-fat curried chicken is packed full of flavour.
It’s quick to cook and the marinade does all the work.
Method
1. Mix the lemon juice with the paprika and red onions
in a large shallow dish. Slash each chicken thigh three
times, then turn them in the juice and set aside for
10 mins.
Ingredients
• Juice of 2 lemons
• 4 tsp paprika
• 2 red onions, finely chopped
• 16 skinless chicken thighs
• Vegetable oil, for brushing
The Marinade
• 300ml Greek yogurt
• large piece ginger, grated
• 4 garlic cloves, crushed
• ¾ tsp garam masala
• ¾ tsp ground cumin
• ½ tsp chilli powder
• ¼ tsp turmeric
2. Mix all of the marinade ingredients together and
pour over the chicken. Give everything a good mix,
then cover and chill for at least 1 hr. This can be done
up to a day in advance.
3. Heat the grill. Lift the chicken pieces onto a rack
over a baking tray. Brush over a little oil and grill
for 8 mins on each side or until lightly charred and
completely cooked through.
AUGUST 2015 | ISSUE #34 | PROMOTION
JANUARY JANUARY 2017 | 2017 ISSUE | #51 ISSUE | #51 PROMOTION
Free cakes for kids Thetford, can you help?...
Free Cakes for Kids is a community service to
families who find it difficult to provide a birthday
cake for their child.
A birthday cake is baked by local volunteers with the
child’s favourite theme (where possible). The cake
is then delivered to the family. This service covers
Thetford, Bury st Edmunds and the area immediately
surrounding, although is at the group’s discretion
where they will and won’t cover so get
in touch if unsure. FCFK has over 80
organisations running though the UK
with 1000’s of cakes being delivered
every year.
Who is eligible? Any child who would
not otherwise receive a birthday
cake is eligible. This may be due to
financial reasons, but could also be
due to circumstances (e.g. young
carers, illness etc.). Families can refer
themselves to receive a cake, however
we do prefer to work direct family organizations such
as Home start or other agencies.
How can I help? There are lots of way to help. By
becoming a volunteer baker you can help us achieve
our goal of putting a smile on as many children’s
(and parents) faces as possible. You don’t need to be
an expert baker just have the basic knowledge and
want to help. Becoming a volunteer baker is flexible;
you can fit it round your commitments and bake
when you have the time. There is no pressure to bake.
For other ways to help please ask.
What will the cake be like and how will it be
delivered? All our cakes are different, we like to
personalise them based on the child’s interests.
The cake will be delivered by a local
volunteer direct to the family or to the
organisation supporting the family.
Why do we do it? We do it because
we care. There are a lot of families out
there that are currently in a situation
that prevents them from providing a
Birthday cake for their child.
We currently have 21 fantastic bakers
who have made more than 50 cakes
over the past 2 years. The cakes come
in all different shapes and sizes from
football shirts, Frozen & Batman to a
pretty pink cake covered in butterflies, Ironman &
Harry Potter to just name a few.
FCFK do not receive any funding however donations
are greatly received to help our bakers deliver such
wonderful gifts.
JANUARY JANUARY 2017 | 2017 ISSUE | ISSUE #51 | #51 FASHION
BY ZEE BATTERSBY
I’m not old i’m
retro
Check out my very
own fashion website
imnotoldimretro.co.uk
Well hello there! I’m back with my monthly column… Ok so firstly a
reminder about me. I’m Zena (Zee for short) I’m 42, a mother and a
grandmother.
HAPPY NEW YEAR!!
As is customary I shall
be sharing with you my
plans for 2017.
Whilst some people
like to have a list of
resolutions, I’ve got a ‘TO
DO’ list!
Number one on my list
is to add to my tattoo
collection and get my
arm finished.
I love the fact my generation are
younger and braver than ever before
and I’m looking forward to seeing
all the tattooed grandparents as
we get older, not to mention the
grandmothers with winged
eyeliner!
I’ve said before I’m a ‘girls’
girl, however, as far as the
January sales are concerned
its every woman for herself!
Here are my tips for getting
the best out of the sales...
Creating a list that you can
refer to on the day will help keep you
focused on the task in hand.
Concentrate on
styles that wont need
replacing as well as
classic pieces that
won’t date. Above all
make sure you invest
in quality fabrics that
12

JANUARY JANUARY 2017 | 2017 ISSUE | ISSUE #51 | #51 FASHION
FASHION
will stand the test of time.
Beautifully cut dresses, trousers,
blouses and jackets can be cleverly
layered to take you from winter to
spring.
If sticking solely to the classics feels a
little too sensible, it’s a good idea to
update existing outfits for the trends
that you like from the new season.
This spring/summer, denim comes in all
shapes and forms and it won’t be going
away any time soon.
The best strategy is to
think about the timeless
investment pieces that you
can wear in lots of different
ways.
Mules are having a ‘moment’
that will continue well into
the New Year.
In general I try to stick to classics: in
the winter I always buy a coat, some
knitwear and some boots and in the
summer I opt for light dresses and
statement sandals.
Finally, if someone tells you that you
don’t need that extra pair of shoes,
ignore of them, you don’t need that
kind of negativity in your life, but a
new pair of shoes can go a long way to
boosting your own self confidence.
Stay stylish - Love Zee x
NEW YEAR,
NEW ME?
AUBURN BOUTIQUE
“New Year, New Me?” – Every Woman, EVER
This is the lie we undoubtedly tell
ourselves every year.
the outfit is completed when paired with our ‘Cara’
suede black boot. This creates an all round Boho
feel but its clear that the key piece is our Camel
Waistcoat.
Equally you can take the Waistcoat and create
a whole new dynamic and style. Just by adding
different prints, a few layers and a contrasting Skinny
Jean. Our Waistcoat can be worn as a key layering
piece in the autumn/winter months, or a lightweight
coat alternative in the spring/summer months. Its
an Incredibly versatile piece that can make or break
your outfit.
And whilst many women stick to it and really do
make difference, there is a vast majority; of which I
am completely and un-regretably one, that is all talk
no action.
So instead of crying over those unshaven pounds,
why not save a few and make a feasible resolution
this year. Instead of spending hundreds of pounds
on a gym membership that you will frantically use
for two weeks after Christmas and then promptly
forget you ever owned. Use that money to buy a
few key pieces this January that can help build your
wardrobe and enhance the outfits you already own
as well as the ones that catch your eye accidently
on that weekly “window shopping” session. So,
Instead of picking holes in your body this January;
embrace it, learn how to dress it, and style it.
“New Year, New Wardrobe Staple Pieces!!” –
Elle, Auburn Boutique
NATURALLY BOHO:
Now don’t get me wrong, I know that Boho Style
isn’t for everyone. However, the patterns, styles
and cuts are extremely versatile for any season
depending on which colours you buy, your garment
can last a lifetime in outfit years. Our new ‘Byoung’
Camel Waistcoat is the perfect example of how one
piece of clothing can be worn in a variety of ways.
With a “Naturally Boho” feel the waistcoat easily
compliments our ‘Byoung’ paisley print dress and
Camel Byoung Waistcoat £65, Paisley
Byoung Dress £75, Ribbed Byoung
Rollneck £35, Circle of Trust Jeans £85,
Longline Garcia Shirt £55, Suede Cara
Shoe Boot £110
THESE BOOTS ARE MADE FOR
WALKING:
If you purchase only one key piece this January,
make it a statement shoe. Of all our garments I
consider footwear to be the most important; an
entire outfit can be complimented or tarnished
by whatever shoes you chose to wear. So why not
reverse the process and build your outfits around a
good shoe? Having a quirky, unique shoe boot like
our ‘Cara’ Atlantic Boot can help to form the basis of
a wonderful wardrobe. Not only do you have the
Midnight Blue, Forest Green and Snake effect Black
to pick colours for outfits from, you have all the
FASHION
colours that compliment them to chose from as
well. The snakeskin effect adds an extra oomph of
sass, but also breaks the shoe down and makes it
look less blocked and heavy. This opens the doors
to endless possibilities in terms of adding new
Suede Cara Shoe Boot £130, Faux Fur
Distressed Bomber £75, Navy Leather
Gloves £25
patterns and embellishments into the mix to
support the “Texture Clashing” trend we talked
about in our last article. We have portrayed this by
pairing our boots with our Grey ‘Garcia’ Bomber
with a distressed feel that has been enhanced by
sequins and beading. And for a more elegant look
we have incorporated, our chic Navy Leather Gloves
and our ‘Garcia’ Animal print fur effect Midi Skirt
perfect for that day to night look.
With the right shoes the possibilities are endless, so
remember quality over quantity. Don’t be afraid to
add a splash of colour or pattern.
With a positive attitude you will have the perfect
wardrobe that is to die for and you might actually
keep your New Years resolution for 2017! Look
good, feel great.
Accessories are a guys best friend
during the colder season.
TIPS & ADVICE THIS SEASON
ACCESSORIES
2017
Sometimes it’s the small pieces and accessories
that really up your style game. What you’ll often
find however, is that no matter the size, the price
tag stays the same (high).
With New Year sales in full swing this is a great
opportunity to pick up those items you’ve been
missing.
I’ve collected some ideas to get you started. Be
sure to check in store and online as the beauty
of an accessory is that you don’t have to worry
about seeing something perfect only to then
discover XXXL is the only size left in the sale…
get going!
BY DANIEL FRANCIS
CARD HOLDERS
The day of the wallet is dead and has been for
quite some time. A card holder forces you to only
take out the necessary plastic (so leave those
16

FASHION
points cards at home, the bar does not
accept). Ted Baker has a great selection
that range from simple and elegant to more
patterned stand out holders.
GLOVES
An essential item for the colder time of year
and something you’re likely to wear every
day so it’s important you invest in a decent
pair. Leather gloves are the way to go if you
want classic, durable and stylish. However,
the more tech savvy amongst us will want
to get their hands on a pair of touchscreen
compatible gloves to avoid that awkward
moment when you can’t unlock and scan
your Starbucks card when shooting for that
free extra pump of syrup! Muji offer up a
pair for under £20.00
UNDERWEAR
Designer Tom Ford suggests replacing your
underwear every six months. So if you can,
great. If not, then just invest in decent picks
to ensure they last without losing their
shape or colour. You can pick up Calvin
Klein packs from Topman or ASOS online.
DOCUMENT HOLDER
No one wants to that guy who shows up
to a meeting, trying to impress, handing
out folded or creased documents. Fear not for
document holders are in full swing at the moment
with most stores and brands offering a variety of
different options. These holders are the perfect
size and lightweight so there are no excuses not
to pick one up.
“When you own a wedding venue, and the day finally comes to actually get
married yourselves, you begin to feel the pressure build!”
We hear from Serena Saunders, Managing Director of Sheene Mill.
SheeneMill
The Most Amazing Day of our Lives!...
‘Jordan and I had been together for 9 years when he popped
the question… It was in a moment of complete surprise, when
I was feeling anything but glamorous! Whilst we had been
together for a long time, we had a business to run together and
always had bigger, more important things to focus on within
the business – The concept of even planning a wedding for
‘myself’, just felt like something I would never have the time to
do!! However, as every ‘bride to be’ does, I found my time and
started to begin the planning process!...
The first thing we needed to confirm was the venue!... Holding
our wedding at the Sheene Mill was a ‘no brainer’! Whilst I
admit, I was a little worried about the potential added pressure
and the concept of being ‘at work’ at first, I also recognise how
beautiful our venue is and could think of no place better for us
both to get married!
The Sheene Mill is so much more than just a venue to us – it is,
quite literally our home! I worked at the Sheene Mill from the
age of 11, when my parents owned the business, to then come
back 10 years after they left to own the business together with
my partner, Jordan. The Sheene Mill has been the home to so
many of my happy memories, from my childhood swims in the
river, to the recent years… My Mum and her now husband got
married at Sheene Mill, my Dad and his Fiancee got engaged
here!
Getting married at our own venue also meant I had complete
trust in my staff and that they would execute everything the
way they know we’d want it to be done. It also gave us the
flexibility to really go ‘to town’ and actually enjoy the venue
from the other side for once! Selecting the suppliers was
22 22

WEDDING
JANUARY 2017 | ISSUE #51
JANUARY 2017 | ISSUE #51 | WEDDING
perhaps slightly easier for us than
most, we see a lot of different
wedding suppliers on a regular
basis. After what felt like years, the
day finally came!...
Walking into the Sheene Mill
everything suddenly became very
real. The place looked absolutely
beautiful, and for a moment I felt so
proud, proud of my amazing staff
and of our lovely venue.
After being ‘officially’ married, the
fun could properly begin and I was
able to try and ‘soak in’ everything
around me! The pavilion looked
stunning, with beautiful deep red,
cream and soft peach flowers
draping softly from the railings and
arching over where Jordan and I
had said our vows.
Big flower displays lined our
walkway and rose petals to match
lined the cream carpet I’d walked
down, matching the cream bows on
the chairs and little hearts of rose
petal confetti on each seat.
As the drinks circulated, our
magician started to make his way
around our guests, the string
quartet began to play and the
divine canapés were in full flow! I
could hear laughter, beautiful music,
and smell beautiful food...
I felt happy and relaxed, knowing
everything was just as I had
imagined. With the canapés starting
our appetites off, it was soon
time to make our way through for
our favourite 8 course, exquisite
wedding breakfast menu!!
As I walked into our dining room,
I was literally blown away!... There was a beautiful, floor to ceiling
blossom tree as soon as we walked in, with stunning crystals,
candles and our guests names hanging from it, there was a
guitarist sat underneath it, playing our favourite songs… And the
table set up looked, well, absolutely breath-taking! The speeches
too were certainly interesting!
As the day progressed feeling fat and full, Jordan and I
disappeared for a few pictures, whilst our evening guests began
to arrive… They were greeted to Moet Ice, served with fresh
strawberries and a range of savoury and dessert canapés. We
danced, we laughed, we ate (some more!) and we partied hard!…
When we left at 5am, my feet were so sore I could barely even
walk across the road to our home! We can’t thank our staff and
suppliers enough for all their efforts and for making our wedding
day the most AMAZING day of our lives!’
WeddingAngel
You’re engaged! What to do now!
BY CATHERINE STARLING-GUNFIELD
So, the countdown
begins towards your
very special day,
marrying the partner
you love and solidifying
your relationship
together...
Many have dreamed of their
wedding day since they were
little, some may have only started
thinking about it once they have
meet that special person, either
way your wedding day will be at the
forefront of your plans and day to
day decision making for
the foreseeable.
So, what do you do now?
Firstly, think about how long you want your engagement to be?
The average engagement is around 18 months nowadays.
Then chat with your partner and family about what your ideal
day looks like.
Then consider the following;
• Season/Time of year
• Location – immediate area/local, in the UK, or abroad
• Size - Intimate or larger affair
• What type of ceremony – religious, civil or humanist
• Your main priorities
• Budget
• Who you would like to help you plan
• Your wedding party, Bridesmaids, Best man, Ushers etc
• Will you need a hired wedding planner or coordinator on the
day
• Any particular dates that are ideal or special too you
• Theme, colour scheme, style and inspirations
26

WEDDING
JANUARY JANUARY 2017 | 2017 ISSUE | ISSUE #51 | #51 WEDDING
Once you are ready start looking
at venues and have a date in mind,
try attending local wedding fairs
and open days to gauge the type
of venues available, local suppliers
and costs.
Consider a subscription to a few
wedding magazines, our favourites
are You & Your Wedding Magazine
and Wedding Ideas.
Create a scrap book and a folder
or file to collect literature and
magazine clippings.
Create a Pinterest board (remember
to keep it ‘secret’) and pin any
wedding ideas that inspire you.
Remember not to get carried away
with Pinterest, be realistic as many
of the images are highly styled and
extremely lavish and it may not
be possible to replicate exactly,
especially if you are on a budget.
Try to enjoy every minute, keep
organised using lists, set up a
wedding only email account and
involve those close to you.
Their second opinion and advice
could be very useful.
The heads up
on hats
As the mother of the bride, or groom, you really want to make
an impression on one of the proudest days of your life.
Milliner Mary-Anne
Morrison answers your
questions on the way to
find the perfect hat for a
wedding.
Q: I’m not used to wearing hats
– where do I start?
A: There are many things to
consider – hair colour, height,
accessories, the occasion, the
style and colour of your outfit
and of course, what you feel
comfortable in.
Generally, the brim of the hat
matches the main colour of the
outfit with a splash of colour on
the crown or trim to highlight
other details, but not always,
and this is where my skills
come in.
Don’t be afraid to try hats on,
it will soon become apparent
what’s best for you.
sweeping brim or one with a
trim that lifts the eye, the eye,
will soften a rectangular face.
Broad and angled brims with a
wide crown, will narrow a round
face and almost any shape suits
an oval face, although large
brims are the most flattering.
If you are petite choose a
narrow brim with a high crown
to add height; if you are tall you
can carry off most styles, but be
careful to avoid a hat that looks
too small.
Q: I want to look confident
wearing my hat. How do I
achieve this
A: If a hat is fitted properly,
feels comfy and co-ordinates
with your outfit you will wear it
with confidence.
My aim when making you a hat
is to make you feel special and
on-trend.
Q: What style will suit me?
A: Small perching hats suit
heart-shaped faces; a full
Sometimes you can look shorter
if your shoes and hat match –
instead match the bag with the
hat.
WEDDING
PLANNING A WEDDING CAN BE A VERY DAUNTING TASK, UNLESS YOU ARE ONE OF THOSE SUPER
ORGANISED TYPES, BUT HERE ARE OUR 5 TOP TIPS TO GETTING YOUR PERFECT DAY SPOT ON:
1) Give yourself time to work out all the details.
The top item on your plan is getting your wedding
ceremony and reception venues sorted. Once you
have done this then you will have a date you are
working towards.
2) Work out the things you could maybe do
yourself. This could save some money for the
overall scheme, but remember don’t give yourself
jobs that require any of your time on the day.
3) Plan everything with your groom. He may be
happy to go along with your scheme and ideas,
but plan this together, that way you will have
great memories to look back on and it’s your first
chance to work as a team. Believe me it makes
great practice for when you have children.
4) Seek advice from wedding professionals.
Many wedding companies will have provided
services to your venue before and for the items
you don’t want to do yourself, their advice is key.
This will make sure you are less flustered on the
day, as you know they will manage all the parts
for you.
5) Remember that the devil is in the details, but
also remember that it is only you, that knows
those details. So if something isn’t right, or is
missing on the day, your guests will probably not
notice. So relax and enjoy your big day together!
To get more great advice from true professionals,
why not visit The Newmarket Wedding Show on
Sunday 22nd January, between 11am and 4pm.
There will be around 140 people to talk to who
will be able to give advice on everything to help
you plan your wedding.
Taking up Tradition
In a lot of ways, British wedding
celebrations haven’t changed all
that much over the ages.
The process from church to reception, wedding
breakfast to celebration – it’s much been the
same for centuries. However, it can sometimes
feel that with so many ideas out there, the
traditional British wedding could be overlooked.
Here are just a couple of simple ideas that could
lend themselves to a more typically traditional
wedding:
Receptions and Toasting: Local Fruits
Custom tends to lean towards champagne or a
similar alternative for receptions and toasting, to
the bride and groom. Traditionally, it would not
have been possible to make wine from grapes
proficiently in the UK or source from abroad with
ease. Instead, the celebratory drink of choice
would have been mead or cider. With such a
beautiful array of mead and cider available both
locally and nationally, why not take tradition by
the horn and opt for a fruity cider reception and a
toast with sweet honey mead.
Dress to Impress?
Way back in Roman times bridesmaids were
instructed to wear similar attire to that of the
bride, in order to ward of evils spirits when
accompanying her on her wedding day. So while
some may say not to wear white on a brides
wedding day, as a sign of respect and tradition, it
was actually regarded as common practice in the
days of the Roman Empire.
The Favours Five
Traditionally guests would have received five
almonds, each signifying a token of well wishing
from the bride and groom: Health, Happiness,
Prosperity, Fertility and Longevity. If you don’t want
to give almonds as favours, why not a beautifully
decorated crossword with the five words hidden
with clues. Or perhaps a differing five items?
Ultimately, it’s not always about the next best
thing or what’s trending online.
NHS recommend that children aged between 5-18
CHAIR
POSE
(OOT-kah -TAHSanna)
Benefits
Strengthens the ankles, thighs, calves, and spine
Stretches shoulders and chest.
Stimulates the abdominal organs, diaphragm, and
heart.
Reduces flat feet.
Cautions:
Headache, Insomnia, Low blood pressure.
How to try the pose:
1. Stand in Tadasana. Inhale and raise your arms
perpendicular to the floor. Either keep the arms
parallel, palms facing inward, or join the palms.
2.Exhale and bend your knees, trying to take the
thighs as nearly parallel to the floor as possible.
The knees will project out over the feet, and the
torso will lean slightly forward over the thighs
until the front torso forms approximately a right
angle with the tops of the thighs. Keep the inner
thighs parallel to each other and press the heads
of the thigh bones down toward the heels.
3. Firm your shoulder blades against the back.
Take your tailbone down toward the floor and in
toward your pubis to keep the lower back long.
inhalation, lifting strongly through the arms.
Exhale and release your arms to your sides into
Tadasana.
Beginner’s Tip:
To help you stay in this pose, perform it near
a wall. Stand with your back to the wall, a few
inches away from the wall. Adjust your position
relative to the wall so that when you bend into
the position, your tailbone just touches and is
supported by the wall.
Deepen the Pose:
The secret to a comfortable stay in Utkatasana
is the release of the heads of the thigh bones
toward the heels. Once in the pose, bring your
hands to your tops thighs. Nestle the bases of
your palms into the creases of the groins and
push the heads of thighs toward the heels,
digging the heels deep into the floor. Against
these actions, lift the sitting bones up into the
pelvis.
4. Stay for 30 seconds to a minute. To come
out of this pose straighten your knees with an
The Wines
of Argentina
This country is about the 5th largest producer of wine in the world,
with a history going back to it’s conquest by Spain. Cuttings were
introduced in 1557 which started the wine industry.
growth was established. Even with the ups and
downs of the Argentine economy in the 20th
Century, the wine industry survived with much
internal consumption.
BY ‘WINE BUFF’ FRED FISHER
Initially it was only for basic quality but in large
amounts. Jesuit missionaries expanded the
cultivation of vines, including it’s most famous
area, Mendoza, close to the Andes mountain range.
Up to the 1990’s the quality was not considered to
be exportable and most was consumed locally or
for sacramental purposes.
Since the Falklands war in 1982 quality increased
gradually leading to today’s culture of exporting
high quality wine. By 1885 with the construction
of the rail links to the capital Buenos Aires, more
With foreign investment, by the end of the 20th
Century growth in quality wines led to exports
around the world.
Climate and Geography
Most wine areas are in the west of the country
bordering the Andes. These areas are somewhat
sheltered by the mountains and therefore have
a fairly dry climate with summer temperatures
reaching 40C, and winter about 10C. Even the
same areas at high altitude go down to 0C but
little frost.
As the winter snows melt, irrigation channels
bring this water down to the vineyards. Soils
range from mostly alluvial to clay, gravel and
limestone.
The vines
Being in the southern hemisphere means that
the growing season is between October and
February. Harvesting can take place up to April
depending on the local micro-climate. Grape
pickings are largely by hand but some is by
machine.
Yields are generally high, 5 or so more times as
those in Europe. As quality increases the yields
will decrease accordingly.
The phylloxera louse , although present
in Argentina, is a weak strain and
under control. As a result of
this most vines are ungrafted
which despite the isolation of
Argentina, carries a risk.
Regions
Mendoza
The vast majority of wine comes
from and around the Mendoza region,
to the west of the country and in the lee
of the Andes. The acreage here is more than the
acreage of New Zealand and Australia combined.
This region can be split into several sub-regions,
Maipu and Lujan de Cuyo being the most
important. Other notable areas are Uco Valley
and Tupungato.
a long history of producing sherry like wines and
brandies.
La Rioja is the oldest area and is best at making
white wines. Lack of water can be a problem.
The North West have the sub-regions of
Catamarca, Jujuy and Salta with planting at high
altitudes of 1500 metres. The Cafayate area in
Salta has plantings even at 1660 metres.
Rio Negro and some of Patagonia have cooler
climates. They only produce about 2% of the
countries wine but lean more to prestige wines as
a result of the cooler climate.
Grapes
Of particular importance is the Malbec originating
in Bordeaux France. It is used well in high
altitude vineyards.
Also introduced by French and
Italian winemakers, who are
consulted, are many European
varieties. These include Chardonnay,
Sauvignon Blanc, Semillon, Muscat,
Torrontes, Cabernet Sauvignon,
Merlot, Syrah, Pinot Noir, Tempranillo
and Barbera. Many others are used
including Bonarda a rarer variety from Savoie in
France.
Still accounting for about 30% of production
is the Criolla, used for basic bulk wine and
frequently in a cardboard carton or produced as
concentrate.
Other Regions
San Juan is the next largest vineyard area. Hotter
than Mendoza, while making good reds they have
Fortunately international varieties are taking over,
especially the Malbec, creating Argentina as a
renowned quality wine producer.
Conclusions...
Try comparing grape varieties with their European counterparts and you would be in for a surprise. If
you can locate high altitude wines e.g Salta and Cafayate then you are in for another surprise.
Beer, Bands & Beards
SUCCESS AT THE BECCLES BEER FESTIVAL...
The Beccles Beer Festival
returned to Beccles Public
Hall in November for its
5th year and was again a
resounding success.
More than 4,000 pints of beer
and 500 pints of cider and
lager were enjoyed by visitors
from all over East Anglia!
They were joined by real ale
enthusiasts from Beccles
and the Waveney Valley and
the Beer festival is first and
foremost a community event,
in the community Public Hall,
raising funds for the community pool - Beccles
Lido.
The event also promotes local produce, and the 30
real ales, 3 ciders and a lager were from 25 local
breweries, all within 30 miles of Beccles – with
Green Jack’s Trawlerboys Best Bitter being voted
“Beer of the Festival”.
The crowds enjoyed live bands on Friday and
Saturday and despite Friday being ladies night the
weekend also attracted plenty of beer loving men
in beards!
It was a huge success, raising much needed funds
for the town’s outdoor swimming pool, and next
year’s event is already being planned for 17-19
November. In fact, many visitors were asking if
there could be a spring Beccles Beer Festival…
THE BEST OF 2016
A really tough part of our job here at
Bounce HQ is reviewing the areas finest
hotels, eateries, events and activities. To
start the New Year off, we revisit our top
three highlights of 2016...
restaurant Frederick’s. Fredrick’s has more
sophisticated fare, serving fine modern
European cuisine by candlelight. We were also
delighted to see a whole menu specifically for
vegetarians.
Overall the Ickworth presented us with a place
and a first-rate source of outdoor adventures.
Following a close second, was
The Bildeston Crown, a trendy yet
traditional village local, painted
out in bold colours, stunning
murals and lined with original
timber frames.
Our first highlight from 2016 had
to be Ickworth House Hotel.
The hotel itself is unmistakably grand, all the
high ceilings and aristocratic touches you’d
expect of an 18th century ancestral home.
The most striking thing you’ll notice as you
arrive, heading up the estate’s long drive, is
the Rotunda.
All of the rooms are name after regular guests
during its halcyon days. There are 27 rooms
in the main hotel, which are individually
furnished, in keeping with the classical style of
the building.
This original 15th century coaching inn has
been imaginatively refurbished to say the
least. Owners, Hayley and Chris ran the Crown
for ten years, and decided to move on to a
new challenge.
After an offer they couldn’t refuse from the
previous owner, they decided to call it home
once more and returned to the Crown to
restore it to its shining glory, and that they
certainly have.
Throughout the building all the lovely timber
frames, original beams, and an inglenook
fireplace survives, however the interiors are
decorated in dark bold colours, stripped
floorboards, amazing sofas and a mixture of
contemporary and traditional art on the walls.
Our kind of place!
There are two restaurants at the hotel. The
Conservatory, which serves breakfast, lunch
and dinner and the adult-only fine dining
The bar serves cocktails perfect for a predinner
drink, and as for dinner itself, what a
selection we were presented with.
Easton White Horse
The menu offers a ‘Classic’ menu or a ‘Select’
menu and you can choose between the two.
From the décor, to the rooms, to the food The
Bildeston Crown had it all to offer.
Recently renovated and taken over by The
Chestnut Group, who have also just launched ‘The
Northgate’ in Bury St Edmunds, the pretty 17thcentury
pub on the small village green certainly
has a lot to offer.
Finally, nestled within the Deben
Valley, 12 miles from the Suffolk
Coast, The White Horse is situated
in the picturesque village of
Easton.
Surrounded by quaint countryside, we were
delighted to have option to sit outside on the
patio, whilst selecting from the menu, however
when presented with the menu this was not an
easy task.
As we journeyed inside the building, admiring old
wooden beams and the quirky design features,
(including some tasteful taxidermy), we took
our seats in the intimate setting of one of the
TO DETOX OR
NOT TO DETOX…
is that the question?
BY EMMA HARVEY LAWRENCE
I have had my fair share of fad dieting
and 7 day detox packages and I can
honestly say that I have been consistently
disappointed. Haven’t you? Why not try
something different this New Year?
Rather than focusing on a New You, have a go at
creating a Better You, and I promise it will last longer
than the first week of January.
What does ‘detox’ mean?
Quite literally, to detox your body, is to abstain from
or rid the body of toxic or unhealthy substances.
From this, a lot of people tend to follow short-term
‘detox diets’ that essentially deprives and gives
nothing back to the body or mind, for the longer
term.
But what about ridding your toxins, avoiding further
intake of those that you wish to remove and then
build the foundations for long-term lifestyle changes,
too? To benefit the way you feel as well as the way
you look.
How can I detox & get the results I am looking for?
In short, the simplest way is to find a Nutritional
Therapist. You may have initial goals of feeling
brighter, losing weight, increasing energy levels etc…
What your Nutritional Therapist will do is provide you
with constructive methods, to follow through with
those goals.
A Nutritional Therapist can provide meal plans,
health advise and better still get to the bottom of
any lingering questions regarding food intolerance,
allergies or cravings. Through tests, thorough
questionnaires and an in-depth consultation, you will
have put all of your food and lifestyle related woes
into the hands of a trained and resourceful therapist.
How can I tell if it is working?
Pursuing the recommendations from your Nutritional
Therapist may not be a quick fix but I can confidently
say that any changes in your diet and your lifestyle,
will be felt and seen over time.
You will be expected to follow up with your
Nutritional Therapist every month or so, so that they
can support you in your journey, towards becoming a
better you and achieve what you to, for yourself.
Is it possible to detox the mind as well as the body?
By simply taking control over what you eat and do,
can be an incredibly empowering process. The more
confidence you have, the more you stick to a routine
that routine will evolve with you, so that you are
in charge of keeping yourself stimulated as well as
nourished.
So why not give it a go? Make a New Year’s
resolution that lasts and focus on the you that you
are, to be the best you can be.
Death, Delusion, Dementia and Deceit
A day in the life of a Private Client Solicitor
The usual defi nition is Private Client but only
other lawyers will understand that term. If I say
Wills, Trust and Probate I can see people’s eyes
glazing over. When I mention that I handle peoples’
matters by being a Deputy or Attorney,
people then think I am a fi nancial advisor. So
now if the situation is suitable, I say that I deal
with death, delusion, dementia and deceit.
Granted that sounds somewhat irreverent but it is
an apt description of what my day and
working life involves.
So how do these four “D’s” feature in my daily
working life? Death is the uniting factor that none
of us can avoid but we can make provision for
our family on our passing by making a Will. I
hear a lot of supposed reasons for not making
Wills from “I don’t have anything”, “my wife/
husband will get it all anyway”, “it’s too depressing”
and I still encounter people who feel that
making a Will will hasten their departure from
this world.
My involvement in drawing up Wills for individuals
is to ensure that your hard earned assets do
go to the people you love, care for and wish to
benefi t. If you do not make a Will, it still surprises
people who actually inherit the assets, especially
if you are not married to a partner. I have seen
too many times the consequences of not making
a Will where the person you wish to inherit is
not covered by the Intestacy Rules which apply
an order of who receives assets when no Will is
in existence. A very common scenario is where
co-habitees have adult children from previous
relationships. If one of them dies and the assets
are just in the sole name then all their assets will
pass to their children not their partner. This could
cause a very real and immediate problem to
the surviving partner of losing their home and
money. A Will could have changed all this and
provisions could have been made both for the
partner and the adult children.
It is therefore very important that when you do
make a Will, consider the different needs of the
various people within your family and how you
can be as fair as possible when there can be
competing interests. It is also the time to think
about whether any of your benefi ciaries need
protection under a Will in which case a straight
forward Trust could be involved to protect them
from their own vulnerabilities. It is also important
to appoint executors who will look after your
wishes; you are the person who knows your
family better than anyone else and therefore it
should be you who is choosing who will administer
and look after your estate so as to ensure
that family disagreements are kept to a minimum.
If you feel that no one in the family is the right
person for the job then you need to consider appointing
a professional, either a family solicitor
or an accountant who has dealt with the family
over the years who will have some insight and
family knowledge but who will also be fi rm but
fair handed should the occasion need it. This
brings me on to delusion. It is quite apparent
from dealing with the Administration of Estates
and obtaining probate that potential benefi ciaries
sometimes have higher expectations of what
they will be left under a Will than the actual reality.
All too frequently I am contacted by remoter
family relatives enquiring as to what they might
have been left under someone’s Will, quite often
even when they have not seen that family member
for 30 years plus.
When I am asked what area of law I
specialise in, I have spent years trying to
have a clever answer encompassing within
one line precisely what I do.
It is therefore helpful when you are dealing with
a Will or making changes to a Will, to have
letters addressed to both the executors and to
the benefi ciaries. This can explain why someone
is not included in a Will, the history of the family
and if the Deceased has cut out an individual
who was fi nancially dependent on them and
the reasons why. The latter is most important as
there are groups of benefi ciaries who can make
a claim against someone’s estate if they feel that
they have not been adequately provided for. If
you are considering this then seeking advice is
essential and a letter even more so, so that the
administration of the estate can be as smooth as
possible.
One of the most satisfying parts of my job is
acting as a Deputy or an Attorney for those who
are cruelly affected by dementia and either do
not have any family or whose family members
are frail and elderly themselves to help them with
their fi nancial matters. When I have been appointed
as Attorney whilst they still have mental
capacity then I will have known them and asked
them details of how and where they would wish
to live in the future, what sort of assistance they
would like to be given should they lose mental
capacity and how they would like their fi nances
to be handled. It is very sad if this day does arrive,
but to be able to assist a client when they do
not have anyone else to stand in their shoes and
look after their fi nancial and health matters gives
me a great sense of pride. Similarly if I am appointed
as a Deputy by the Court of Protection,
where there is no other family members available,
it is again a very rewarding position to be
that person’s champion. This can involve sorting
75
out the correct residential care for them, continuing
to check they are being looked after in the
home, liaising with social/healthcare workers
and others to make sure that they receive all
the assistance and extra help they may require.
It also means being fi nancially responsible for
their money and making sure and taking advice
to ensure that their money will last as long as
possible to keep them in their chosen home. It
also means visiting them, talking with them and
making sure that they have the clothes that they
like and need and any other items which may
provide the day to day stimulation to make their
end of days care as comfortable as possible.
Sadly part of my daily legal life in dealing with
people’s affairs brings me into contact with
various people who have seen fi t to take fi nancial
advantage of either their own family members
or others. All too often I encounter people
who feel that it is acceptable to use Mum or
Dad’s credit card or debit card as they know the
pin number to not only look after their parent’s
fi nances but also to benefi t themselves. In these
circumstances I have to draw on my own diplomatic
skills to point out that the position of being
an attorney is one of trust and the overwhelming
point is to ensure that the person who has given
the power of attorney to someone is looked after,
not the actual Attorney. In some cases when
the parent dies adjustments do have to be made
to the amount such a child receives under a Will.
This is where it is vital to seek advice before entering
into a Lasting Power of Attorney to make
sure that you have chosen the right person from
your family to be an Attorney and also that before
the Attorney takes on the appointment that
they understand the limitation on how they can
deal with that person’s money.
So in conclusion as solicitors, we do not only
assist with the making of legal documents such
as Wills and Lasting Powers of Attorney, we also
take a practical approach of encouraging the
writing of letters to family and Executors so as
to explain the reasons for decisions taken. These
letters are your way of speaking when you no
longer have a voice, either through lost mental
capacity or on your passing.
This way we can deal with
death or dementia and
hopefully side step any
problems with delusion
or deceit.
TO BUY
or not to buy
Not long ago (but technically
last year!) we spoke about
reasons that make it a good
time to throw something out.
BY RUBY REED
Well what about
having some go
to questions that
make it easier to
know whether we
should be buying
something or not?
Having some new guidelines for
the New Year may not be the
worst thing- especially if you
tend to find yourself spending
money on things you don’t really
need- and too often!
For example, I am on my
lunch break, holding up a very
tempting new top. My first
thoughts are; it’s pretty, I like it, I start to imagine the sort
of occasion that I could potentially wear it to. Already I
have started to sell myself the item. I start walking to the
till. Perfect, great find Rubes, well done.
Well before we start this brisk walk to the check out, why
don’t we ask ourselves a few questions… just quickly?
1) Is there actually an occasion on the horizon I will wear
this to?
If the answers no, you may want to consider how long it
is going to be hung up ‘waiting’ for this specific occasion.
Will it be months? If you can think of 3 times you will wear
it the purchase is probably safe. In summary are you going
to get enough use out of this item, or is it just going to take
up your wardrobe space?
2) What other things in my wardrobe will it go with and
do I have anything else like it?
Make sure you can picture the item with your other
clothes- if not it’s going to be sat waiting to be matched
with something, and who knows how long that will be.
80

JANUARY JANUARY 2017 | 2017 ISSUE | #51 ISSUE | #51 LIFESTYLE
Also if you have something
particularly similar, do you
really need this too? Unless
you are replacing it!
3) Can I afford it right now?
Be sensible. If there’s
something else that needs
more financial attention at
the moment, take a step back.
You might thank yourself
later. Another trap is to find a
bargain and think you couldn’t
possibly leave this item. But
try to think if you’re buying
it for the sake of it. Would
you even be thinking about
this if it were full price or
considerably more?
4) Lastly, will it make me
happy?
If you need a pick me up after
a rough day, or simply know
you’d regret not buying it, then it’s ok to treat
yourself once in a while!
most important thing right now. So with these
few quick fire questions, maybe we’ll end up
walking away from a few more unnecessary
buys in the future. Put this to the test and who
knows, maybe that pay check will go a little
further this month…
Good Luck with your next temptation!
Follow me on Twitter @rubyslifestyle.
Similar questions can be used not just on
clothes but anything! Ask yourself how much
use you will get from something, how much
of a difference it will be making and if it’s the
CARLA MIREILLE JONES
Back
to the basics
Let’s start at the very beginning, it’s a
very good place to start... as the New
Year is here so many of us create new
beginnings...
I am going to talk you through the different types
of bases there are in make-up.
BB CREAMS
BB stands for Beauty Balm, it is a light tinted
moisturiser that suits every skin type. It does not
have coverage, but smoothes things out, great for
summer!
CC CREAMS
CC stands for Colour Control, they were designed
for sallow or red in the skin. It smoothes and evens
out the skin tone. This is not recommended for
oily or problem skin.
DD CREAMS
DD stands for Daily Defence. They are very good
at protecting your skin from the rays of the sun,
but I would not advice using them all the time as
they can block the pores.
EE CREAMS
EE stands for Extra Exfoliation. These are
designed to get rid of the dead skin cells, leaving
the skin smooth and clear. They should only be
used once or twice a week and make sure you
research good ones, as some are too scratchy
and can leave minute scratches on the surface of
the skin.
Of course you have your serums, moisturisers
and foundations as normal, which I will touch on
another time.
JANUARY 2017 | ISSUE #51
BY CHARLIE LONG
SPRING/SUMMER 17
Charlie Long shares an insight on this spring/summers
make-up trends...
The spring/summer 2017 makeup
trends have arrived and for all
you make-up phobes you will be
pleased to hear that the upcoming
season is all about minimal,
effortless make-up.
This season is for the lazy girls but also the
brave, it is about those that are spontaneous
with make-up and like to go crazy with colour.
Spring/summer is all about being fearless and
not afraid to step out of your comfort zone
and try something new.
So, now that Christmas is done and dusted
for another year, it is time to refresh your
make-up collection by adding some colour.
The new limited edition Urban Decay Full
Spectrum Eye shadow Palette is a must have
in everyone’s make-up collection for 2017.
The limited edition set includes 21 eye
shadows in a variety of rainbow-inspired hues;
this is the most that Urban Decay has ever
included in a palette.
The shades are elegantly arranged in trios by
colour family.
This makes the palette aesthetically pleasing
on the eye and allows for tonnes of creativity.
The palette includes super-smooth mattes to
shimmer-laced shades; each shade features
Urban Decay’s Pigment Infusion System.
The pigment infusion system is what gives
each shade it’s velvety, rich colour, blendable,
staying power properties.
The Full Spectrum palette also features a
mirror and comes complete with a doubleended
brush. This tapered brush is perfect
for placing eye shadow on the eyelid and also
defining the crease or blending out colour.
This beautifully sleek palette will only set you
back a mere £43, which I think its exceptional
value for money and can either be purchased
direct from Urban Decay (www.urbandecay.
co.uk) or House of Fraser.
New Year, New Glow with SK Clinic + Spa...
A few home remedies and a visit to
SK Clinic + Spa after the indulgent
festive season to restore your skin’s
natural glow.
DETOX
You will hear the word detox a lot in January
but the best way to determine if you need to
detox is by assessing your complexion. If your
body is not given the tools or time to cleanse
itself properly, an excessive build-up of toxins
can occur; the skin is one of the first places a
poor diet and lifestyle will be reflected.
INSIDE OUT
A simple change to make is to up your water
intake to flush out those toxins. During meals
cut down on sugars, carbohydrates, red
meat, alcohol, caffeine and processed foods.
Fruit and vegetables are enriched with antioxidants
to help protect your skin from free
radical damage.
SWEAT IT OUT
Using a sauna or exercising up to three times
a week is excellent at eliminating toxins from
the body, plus the heat generated helps to
calm and fight stress. The pores will also
open, boosting circulation and helping
the skin to flourish.
VISIT SK CLINIC + SPA
To really make your skin glow with a
chance to relax for the New Year, take
advantage of SK’s offer throughout all
of January with the combination of a
Body Polish Treatment and 30-minute
The Body Polish Treatment will leave your
STRAIGHT
FROM THE
CATWALK
SPONSORED BY CABELLO, HALESWORTH
With the Spring/Summer 2017
runway shows drawing to a close,
we saw a whole host of new hair and
beauty looks to get excited about.
Textured hair, bold eye shadows and brushed up
brows are just some of the trends designers from
across the globe have been showcasing for next
season.
Here are some of the top trends that can be taken
straight off the catwalk and into your hair and beauty
regime.
FELINE FLICKS...
Dramatic, winged eyeliner was popular on the
catwalks, especially in the Milan shows. Perfecting
a wing can be easily achieved with good, longlasting
liquid eyeliner. To make your wings even
more accurate, simply place clear adhesive tapes
underneath your bottom lashes and angle them
towards your temples. Draw on your eyeliner using
the tape as a guide. Remove the tape after applying
and say hello to flicks that finally match.
PLAITS...
The most prominent hairstyle shown this runway
season was undoubtedly plaits. From Paris to New
York – numerous runway shows were showcasing
plaited locks with both casual and evening looks.
For a carefree, dressed-down style, tie mini plaits in
sections of your hair and accessorise them with beads
or hair rings. For a more glamorous look, French plait
both sides of your head down to the nape of your
neck. Attach both plaits together once there and
braid down to the end of your hair so it finishes as
one. Complete with a jewelled hair tie or a ribbon.
TEXTURED CURLS...
Curls, perms, crimps and waves were everywhere on
the SS’17 runways. Achieve the curls you desire by
using different electronic hair products. For small,
tight curls, a thin curling wand is best. For soft, larger
waves, a barrel waver or heated ceramic rollers will
work better.
Glitter Lips from www.lovelemonade.com
RIBBONS...
Accessorize your way into next season by ditching
normal hair ties and opting for pretty ribbons instead.
Tie around the head and fasten to create a cute Aliceband,
or belt around the base of a slick, low ponytail
for effortless on-the-go style.
GLITTER LIPS...
One look that got everybody talking this fashion
week was the glitter lips that were featured on the
Milan catwalks. These look amazing at parties and
will be sure to get you tons of compliments. Achieve
this look easily at home by applying a bold, glossy lip
colour onto the lips (you can use your favourite tinted
gloss or a high-shine lipstick). Then, when the lips are
still wet, dab a face glitter (in a similar shade to the
lipstick) onto the lips using a cotton bud.
STAG INTERIORS
Let the
light in
The New Year’s resolution, the
little tradition of a promise to
yourself to make a little change
in some way to make things
easier.
The promise might be to take more holiday, or
spend a little more time on yourself, or even to
break the new years resolution... But how about
sticking to one that not only benefits you, but
also benefits your friends and family every day?
How about letting the light back into your home.
We don’t mean more fairy lights, as you will no
doubt have seen enough over Christmas. No,
we mean, lightening and opening everything up,
fresh and ready for the New Year.
Of course, once the New Year hits, so does reality,
and from celebrations, parties and feasting,
comes work, school runs, and daily life.
Wouldn’t it be nice to come back from a long
day to a home that is uncluttered, free from
indian piles and space to start the evening in? Or
even to come down to in the morning? Remind
yourself that your home is a sacred place, but
also that it is a haven away from the world. We
are not saying get rid of absolutely everything
and paint it all white. We are saying store, hang,
bundle and fold. Add a few touches of new to the
edge of a sofa, the middle of the table, or by the
back door.
Just Ideas...
Hang it up. There will always be wall space
for a few more hangers for coats, scarves and
blankets. It frees up the piles over the back of
chairs!
Having big wicker baskets dotted around the
house for any use - logs, books, clothes or how
about for shoes by the back door?
Mirrors. The epitome of creating light. How
about hanging a few round the house?
Lighten up the decor. Swap darker cushion
covers or throws for a lighter.
Let the light in and ready for a brand new year.
Get a new lamp to light up that dark corner.
January
THE START OF THE YEAR
BY KATE LINES
Kates Top Tip : Now’s a great time to prune
currants and gooseberries - especially new
bushes or cordons.
In January, your garden could need
protecting from frosts, gale-force
winds and heavy rain.
General
Check stakes, ties, fleeces and other supports for
damage and consider moving plants to sunnier
positions to maximize light.
Don’t forget to keep feeding the birds, food is scarce
for them over winter. You can also start planning next
year’s vegetable plot.
Fruit
• Plant bare-root trees and bushes, as long as the soil
isn’t frozen.
Vegetables
• Sow broad beans in pots in mild areas, placing
them in a cold frame or unheated greenhouse.
• Sow seed indoors for early crops eg: lettuces,
summer brassicas (e.g. cabbages and cauliflowers),
spinach, salad onions and turnips.
• Sow onion seed in a heated propagator.
SPORT
owner Marcus Evans. He has allowed the club to
stagnate and left McCarthy to do an admirable
job with one hand tied behind his back, while not
appearing to have the football nous to do anything
about it.
JUST CALLING FOR MICK
MCCARTHY’S HEAD IS TOO SHORT-
SIGHTED…THE TOWN BOSS IS ONLY
PART OF THE PROBLEM...
As I write this, after watching
another instantly forgettable
match, I fear Ipswich Town are at
a crossroads.
In truth, the 1-1 home draw
with Cardiff City might live a
little longer in the memory
– but only for Bluebirds
defender Sol Bamba
completely losing the plot
and some memorable halftime
fare which saw ITFC
cheerleaders dance to a
brass band.
If that piece of
‘entertainment’ made no sense,
the same could be said for Mick McCarthy’s
thinking in constantly leaving Jonny Williams
on the bench and Jonas Knudsen on the pitch.
The vultures have been circling above the
home dugout for quite a while with most
glad to see the back of 2016, even if many are
staying away from Portman Road altogether.
I have said in this column repeatedly that I
want to be entertained and, for that reason
alone, I don’t think Mick is my man.
But, in a rare quirk in football, I am not
convinced that a change in manager will bring
about a change in fortune, whether quick-fix
or longer term.
The larger blame must rest at the door of
Back McCarthy. Or sack McCarthy and free the purse
strings (a little) for a new man. The choice is that
simple.
The fact Evans is appearing to do neither, while
remaining forever reclusive, is unforgiveable.
Even then, there are yet more problems than just the
owner/manager combo – though you could argue
they are the reason for the following concerns.
The standard of football at Portman Road over
the last 12 months has been consistently dire and
nearly always forgettable. Ask me my favourite three
matches in the last calendar year
and I would struggle.
In fact, it would probably be as a
result of a decent opponent rather
than because of the men in blue.
And what do you get when the
football is bad and a lot of people
are blaming either the manager
or the owner – or both? Poor
attendances.
These dismal matches are being
played out to a half-full Portman
Road and I don’t blame anyone who stays away.
I write this just 13 days before Christmas – and I
apologise for its ‘Bah Humbug’ nature, especially as
you are reading this at the start of a new year.
I am just very fearful of these crossroads and the
direction my football club is taking.
GET SOME ACTION
BY ROSS “ACTION MAN” WISHART
Happy New Year! Welcome
one and all to 2017! It’s
going to be a great one,
and here’s why...
It’s hard to believe that it has been a year
now since I was carted off a football pitch by
ambulance.
Whilst I knew my leg was broken, I was
stunned when the consultant told me that
that my knee’s posterior cruciate ligament
was completely ruptured, it couldn’t be
repaired surgically due to its proximity to the
artery and they don’t heal, the ligament was
history.
To say I was devastated is an understatement,
regular Bounce readers will know that I’m
quite an active fellow, (the clue is in the
nickname!) not just for my articles, which
I’ve been writing for almost four years now
and very much enjoy, but also other regular
sporting exploits not to mention running after
two small children.
A part of me at that time thought it was all
over, Action Man was dead, part of me had
gone for good, could I function without it?
Well at first, not really, it took two months
SPORT
before I could walk unaided and another
six weeks before I could lose the full leg
brace. Six months were spent in and out of
physiotherapy and it was over nine months
before I was able to grace a football pitch
again.
The prolonged period of traction has left its
mark, I am most certainly heavier with a much
lower level of fitness than this time last year,
but the important this is that I know it, I’m
back and I’m making 2017 my year, the year to
#getsomeaction
That brings me on to my motivation to write
these articles. I’ve often quipped at my
own shortcomings (pun intended) at 5’ 5.5”
(the half is very important). I’m certainly no
professional athlete. Ross Wishart is married
with two children and a busy full time job,
underneath the intimidating Action Man
persona is just a fairly Average Joe.
All of these clubs, events and activities
featured in Bounce are available to all and if I
can do it that means YOU CAN DO IT!
I absolutely love to hear stories about readers
trying new sports, joining new clubs and
tapping into the Action Man that lives in all
of us! If you have any questions then please
feel free to get in touch, I’m always on hand to
offer any guidance.
GET FIT...
At Liberte Fitness
stick with it along with the additional support
from your peers.
Instead of heading back indoors we
recommend heading for the park!
As we hit the midway point through the
winter and the cold winter mornings and
long dark evenings seem never ending
how do you stay motivated to workout?
Last summer is a distant memory and the next
seems far in the future and staying motivated
is harder than achieving a clear round at total
wipeout!
We spend a majority of our time inside
especially in winter so use your fitness routine
as a chance to get back to nature, disconnect
from technology and make the most of some
pure clean air.
Make sure whatever you do it’s fun - fitness
should always be fun, challenging, but
definitely fun! To book your free trial session
head to www.libertefitness.com.
At LF we have a couple of suggestions that
may help you with the continuous battle you
probably have with your brain.
Exercise with others be it friends or a group
of like minded people - arranging to meet
others in our experience makes for a lot more
fun! When you have fun you are more likely to
THEATRE
ROYAL
Early January sees the final 2
weeks of our pantomime Beauty
and the Beast, the show opened
in early December and received
some fantastic reviews and
achieved 4 stars from The Stage.
It was also well attended with over 1000
audience members coming along during its
opening weekend alone. To date 19,000 tickets
have been sold during the run, if you haven’t
been able to join in the fun and mayhem yet
then never fear, Beauty and the Beast continues
until Sunday 15 January.
Once panto closes we have some wonderful
winter warmers to keep you entertained
during the cold month of January. On
Saturday 21 January we welcome the hilarious
Showstoppers. If you haven’t seen them
before they are a touring troupe who create an
improvised musical based on suggestions given
to them from the audience on the evening. The
company boast an array of awards and no two
shows are ever the same. It could be Rocky
Horror meets Miss Saigon or Cats crossed with
Chicago, with the Showstoppers you never
quite know what you are going to get, the only
guarantee is plenty of laughs!
Following on from that we host the latest in
our Lunchtime Concert series on Monday 23
January, we welcome Saxology. They are a
Saxophone Quartet who perform a programme
of Baroque and Classical arrangements, French
Neo Romantic, English Pastoral, American
Jazz and a premiere too, led by composer and
arranger, Jeffery Wilson. Each concert is followed
by complimentary cakes, coffee and tea in the
Greene Room and is sponsored by Gross and Co
Solicitors.
January is completed by the visit of Bury
Theatre Workshop with their stage adaptation of
Tolstoy’s classic novel Anna Karenina. The local
community group perform between Tuesday
24 and Saturday 28 January. The show explores
the themes of personal responsibly, fate and
powerlessness.
Looking into February Theatre Royal Bury
St Edmunds presents Northanger Abbey,
adapted by the acclaimed Austen specialist Tim
Luscombe, this show opens in Bury St Edmunds
and then embarks on National Tour. You can
see the performance between Thursday 2 and
Saturday 11 February.
2016 is now behind us and it was a fantastic year
at Theatre Royal Bury St Edmunds with many
brilliant shows. Our line-up for January and early
February sets the bar pretty high for the rest
of the year, I wonder what the rest of 2017 may
have in store for the theatre? I have no doubt that
there will be plenty more fantastic shows and
many enjoyable evenings. It would be lovely if
you could join us.
JANUARY 2017 | JULY ISSUE JULY 2014 #51 2014 | | ISSUE | MUSIC ISSUE #21 & #21 ENTERTAINMENT
BY JACK STEVENS
MUSIC
“This is the set-up for the song,
mate. It’s an introduction. Don’t
interrupt”.
...as Falco attempted to paraphrase
the introduction to ‘Robocop 4...’, one
audience member heckled. He retaliated.
A somewhat disconcerting Andrew
Falkous still exudes charm when picking
on the audience in jest, and his attitude
perfectly mirrors the feeling of his music.
Future of the Left’s sound has always been
a brutal and unsettling listen, but it has
it’s dark, humorous subtext from time to
time. Lyrically dense, with a sound that
bruises and flicks between time signatures
and aggressive pauses, it’s an anxious and
exhilarating listen in equal measure.
The blisteringly loud ‘Arming Eritrea’ opens
their set, which follows on from a blinding
performance from USA Nails, London’s
answer to Drive Like Jehu. Sometimes,
planets align and gods are appeased when
lineups match bands as perfectly as this.
New tracks like ‘If AT&T Drank Tea What
Would BP Do’ injure and offend like the
Jesus Lizard or Shellac. The band’s savage
noise is propelled by Julia Ruzicka’s
woolen fuzz-tone of deafening bass. It
cuts neatly into the drum sound. Jack
Egglestone’s playing is boisterous,
turbulent; it pilots the band’s noise,
hammering in until it stabs you with an
almighty sonic force. The power of this
rhythm section is nothing but fearful.
Elsewhere in the set, ‘The Limits Of
Battleships’ cracks and booms abruptly
throughout, with pauses so blunt that they
feel like cavities being unshelled bare at
brute force.
That humorous subtext is most evident on
tracks like ‘Singing Of The Bonesaws’ and
‘How To Spot A Record Company’, which
are scattered amongst the set. Perhaps
this is the quality that sets Future of the
Left apart from others in the alternative
rock scene... their extended metaphors,
their scornful and ironic references towards
popular culture... it all builds towards
the identity of the band. Something that
excels them even further than Falkous’
previous endeavour, Mclusky, is this deeper
and complex meaning that outrides any
previous output from the Welsh equivalent
of John Reis.
It’s hard to pinpoint what sets this band
apart from others, but seeing Future of
the Left in concert reminds you that the
alternative scene is more than just alive;
it’s flourishing, it’s literate, and incredibly
pissed off.
See you next month - Jack
Adventures
NEW YEAR, NEW START...
Happy New Year to all my fans out
there… hope you had a bloomin’
amazing Christmas... I did!
So I bet your dying to know all about mine?
Well, it involved loads of Turkey scraps, squeeky
toys (that I took great satisfaction letting off when
everyone was in mid-conversation), presents (which
I unwrapped all by myself), afternoon naps by the
fire and snuggles with my kittens - check out our
Christmas family portrait below – I know pretty cute
right? I am the gorgeous fella in the middle by
the way!
Anyway, enough about them, and more about me,
this year I had my very own Santa costume. I reckon
I looked the part, and on New Year’s Eve we had our
own murder mystery party, they let me join in, (but I
suspect I was the main entertainment in the end).
My resolutions this year are to sneak more treats,
take more walks on the beach and to stop peeing
on the kitchen floor for attention when I am left for
longer than an hour on my own. My bad!
Here’s to 2017, keep up to date with my antics on
Twitter @bouncearchie.
Last year, if you remember, the kittens were new
around this gaff, and I thought they were the
Gremlins that invaded Christmas,. Turns out they are
alright really and in a year they’ve grown up to be
my little mates... Even though Harley is bigger than
me now and Mia always tries to steal my spot on
the sofa.
They even left the tree decorations alone this year,
which was a relief as usually its my job to square
them up! Uff!
