Reflecting on these initial photographs I had been cultivating the
idea that people were montaged identities through the clothes
they chose to wear. There seemed to be a need for the wearer of
clothes to project the notion that their clothed appearance had a
seamless integrity, a style as it were, and in achieving this state of
appearance it reflected who they were as people.
However, our clothes are a bricolage of collected items of apparel
and ideas about appearance imbued with cultural messages of
who we portray we feel we are to others. This though can so
often become miss-matched. As such the conceit is unveiled, the
game is up. We are revealed for who we are, (if we can ever
actually know who we are); not purposeful, independently minded
strong individual of enviable status, but people whose
vulnerabilities and insecurities make us fragile, insecure and
imperfect; less than we would wish to be.
