• Create new materials for professional practice and advocacy. Get Involved<br />

in the work of the association. AASL has many opportunities for members<br />

to volunteer through short-term projects and committees.<br />

• Create an action plan to improve one aspect of your school library program<br />

to meet one or more of the Empowering Learners guidelines.<br />

Share<br />

• Discuss issues with your colleagues on AASL social media channels,<br />

including the Knowledge Quest website, AASLForum, and ALA Connect.<br />

• Work with your state school library association on advocacy efforts.<br />

• Sign and share the “I Support Learning4Life” petition!<br />

Grow<br />

• Join AASL, the only national association focused solely on the interests of<br />

school librarians, and your state affiliate association.<br />

Learner4Life Organizations<br />

Organizations across the country have signed on as AASL Learner4Life organizations<br />

in support of the Learning4Life implementation plan. These organizations<br />

see the plan and its components as essential to building a strong K–12 education<br />

system. If your organization would like to sign on as an L4L Organization, please<br />

fill out the endorsement form and return to Jennifer Habley.<br />

L4L Tools<br />

The Learning Standards & Program Guidelines Implementation <strong>Toolkit</strong> guides school<br />

librarians through Getting Started, Who is the 21st-Century School Librarian?,<br />

Inquiry, Correlating to Your Curricula, Gaining Support, Transforming the Physical<br />

Space of the Library, and Implementation Challenges. This toolkit is designed<br />

to help practitioners learn more about the key ideas of the learning standards and<br />

provide guidelines for sharing those ideas with others. It includes official AASL<br />

materials as well as materials created by L4L coordinators, practicing school librarians,<br />

library school faculty members, and experts in the field of education. This<br />

toolkit was developed by Kristin Fontichiaro and Melissa Johnston and includes an<br />

introduction by Nancy Everhart, AASL President 2010–2011.<br />
