update
Leaf Street
Children at St. Wilfrid’s RC School helping
to brighten up the site hoardings
As you can see from the photographs, the development of 172 two-bedroom apartments
and three-bedroom townhouses at our Leaf Street and Royce Road sites in Hulme are
now well underway. The homes will be available at the going private rental price for
similar properties in the area and income generated will be invested back into our homes,
communities and support services.
Archaeological findings
As you might have heard, some
interesting discoveries were made while
preparing the land for building. The
remains of three terraced house cellars
along Devonshire Road and the first class
men’s pool of the former Leaf Street Public
Baths were uncovered by archaeologists
from Salford University. A sword was
also found which experts from the Royal
Armouries in Leeds have dated back to
1855, which they believe belonged to an
officer with the Lord Transport Corp. No
physical remains survived of the Chorltonupon-Medlock
Workhouse which was
demolished in 1857.
New trees for Hulme
When we had to remove some trees on
the development sites, we committed
to planting significantly more trees
than were removed. Having listened
to suggestions we have submitted
a plan for where the 100 trees could
be planted, around half of which will
be in different parts of Hulme for the
benefit of the local environment and
communities.
Training, placements and
apprenticeships
We have supported our contractor
Keepmoat to put on a series of training
days to support local people to gain the
skills and CSCS card needed to work
on construction sites. So far 47 people
have benefited from this training, with
more sessions in the pipeline alongside
manual handling and accredited asbestos
training.
Adam (centre) was taken on as an
apprentice groundworker after
impressing on a work placement
Six people have completed or are
currently doing work placements with
Keepmoat, giving them hands-on
experience in administration, labouring
and architectural design. There are
currently 18 placements in a range of
roles available, so if you think you could
benefit from a work placement then get
in touch with our One Future team now.
See page 19 for details.
16 apprentices are now working with our
site contractors and sub-contractors, with
open days recently taking place to find
six talented new apprentices to work in
joinery, ceramic tiling, decorating, hard
landscaping and electrical work.
Adam Billingham, from Fallowfield, was
one such apprentice, employed by
sub-contractor CS Civils after impressing
during a work placement. Adam said: “I
was sick of sitting around doing nothing
and I’ve got a little boy, so I wanted to
get back into work. I didn’t have any
experience, so I went on a placement
which was meant to be for eight weeks
and after six weeks CS Civils took me on
as an apprentice groundworker. I really
appreciate what everyone has done for
me and now I just want to put the hard
work in and show them I can be good.”
Working with children
and young people
As reported in the last edition of Inspire,
our One Youth team recently joined
forces with Keepmoat, Manchester
Young Lives and Manchester City
Council to brighten up the garages on
Shawgreen Close with street art. Since
then our One Youth team and Keepmoat
have also been getting artistic with
children at St. Wilfrid’s RC School to paint
new murals for the site hoardings. The
children are excited to see their work
which will be on display very soon.
