hard and severe. They have only <strong>the</strong>mselves to<br />

censure. They have placed upon <strong>the</strong>ir own necks a<br />

yoke which <strong>the</strong>y find grievous to be borne. It is not<br />

<strong>the</strong> yoke which Christ has bound upon <strong>the</strong>m. God's<br />

care and love were exercised in <strong>the</strong>ir behalf; but<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir selfish, evil, unbelieving souls could not<br />

discern His goodness and mercy. They rush on in<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir own wisdom until, overwhelmed with trials<br />

and confused with perplexity, <strong>the</strong>y are ensnared by<br />

Satan. When you ga<strong>the</strong>r up <strong>the</strong> rays of light which<br />

God has given in <strong>the</strong> past, <strong>the</strong>n will He give an<br />

increase of light.<br />

I referred <strong>the</strong>m to ancient Israel. God gave<br />

<strong>the</strong>m His law, but <strong>the</strong>y would not obey it. He <strong>the</strong>n<br />

gave <strong>the</strong>m ceremonies and ordinances, that, in <strong>the</strong><br />

per<strong>for</strong>mance of <strong>the</strong>se, God might be kept in<br />

remembrance. They were so prone to <strong>for</strong>get Him<br />

and His claims upon <strong>the</strong>m that it was necessary to<br />

keep <strong>the</strong>ir minds stirred up to realize <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

obligations to obey and honor <strong>the</strong>ir Creator. Had<br />

<strong>the</strong>y been obedient, and loved to keep God's<br />

commandments, <strong>the</strong> multitude of ceremonies and<br />

ordinances would not have been required.<br />
