Greg, who has run the Stihl
Shop in Tauranga since 1991
and the Stihl Shop in Waihi
with his wife Siobhan since
2013, has been an agent of the
Hamilton-based Hansa company
for many years.
“We love the product,
we love the people, and we
are extremely proud to sell
their products in Waihi and
Tauranga.”
Getting the right tool for
the job is Greg and Siobhan’s
mantra, with the Stihl Shops
supplying a comprehensive
range of power tools to tackle
just about any job in the great
outdoors.
“We sell and service all
sorts of Stihl products which
include chainsaws, brush cutters,
blowers, water blasters,
in fact all aspects of hand held
outdoor power equipment,”
Greg said.
Traditionally such equipment
has been petrol powered
but, since 2009 the Stihl range
had included battery powered
equipment, he said.
The technology had opened
up a whole new market for
his business, which supplies
everyone from home users to
commercial contractors.
“The technology in
batteries is getting better all
the time, which means we have
had amazing amount of growth
in that part of the business, and
we are expecting much more.”
Some machines, Greg said,
had massive battery packs
worn on the operator’s back.
“We are talking a run time
of about 800 minutes, as far
as battery life is concerned.
That’s a reasonable amount
of time and has commercial
applications.”
They’re cheap to run, and
quiet, which is advantageous
for use around rest homes, hospitals
and schools.
Customers include local
councils.
Petrol doesn’t have a long
shelf life, which can be an
issue for a home user on a
small lifestyle block who occasionally
uses such equipment.
But, Greg said, that didn’t
mean the days of petrol power
were over.
“There’s certainly a place
for both petrol and battery
power.
“Petrol is never going to
fade away because there are

still people out there who want
it. I’ve said to Stihl ‘when are
