Traditionally such equipment has been petrol powered but, since 2009 the Stihl range had included battery powered equipment, he said. The technology had opened up a whole new market for his business, which supplies everyone from home users to commercial contractors. “The technology in batteries is getting better all the time, which means we have had amazing amount of growth in that part of the business, and we are expecting much more.” Some machines, Greg said, had massive battery packs worn on the operator’s back. “We are talking a run time of about 800 minutes, as far as battery life is concerned. That’s a reasonable amount of time and has commercial applications.” They’re cheap to run, and quiet, which is advantageous for use around rest homes, hospitals and schools. Customers include local councils. Petrol doesn’t have a long shelf life, which can be an issue for a home user on a small lifestyle block who occasionally uses such equipment.
