Work is continuing on the downstream side of the Crosslee Bridge with an estimated completion date in early August. The parapet and copes as well as the two pillars and string course have had to be taken down. The pillars and string course will be completely replaced before final work to rebuild the bridge followed by the reinstating of the road surface at the edge of the carriageway. The proposed street name for the Cala Homes’ site off the Houston Road at Lonend is ‘Hallcraigs Crescent’. The name derives from a former Quarry located behind the site and adjacent to Quarry Brae and a former 19th century property that was situated in what is locally known as Manse Field. I was pleased to see that after my intervention the overgrown grass from Deafhillock roundabout to and beyond St Benedict’s High School has been cut allowing the ‘Welcome to Linwood’ sign to be visible and Linwood more welcoming. The roundabout outside the school has also had a trim and I have been informed that this grass cutting will be undertaken on a scheduled basis. My surgeries are held on the second Tuesday of each month in Brookfield Village Hall from 6pm to 6.30pm then in Houston Village Hall from 7pm to 7.45pm. All welcome. Donation £2. Call Mark on 07968 052538. Broadband Speed Progress Regular readers will know that I have been pursuing improvements to the broadband speeds serving Houston for some time. Our broadband speeds have been very poor compared to other areas. I am grateful to the many residents who completed my petition for an upgrade to the Bridge of Weir exchange, which serves most of Houston. The Houston Community Council have been calling for this for some time also. I am delighted that the Bridge of Weir exchange has now been upgraded. The work is underway to upgrade individual cabinets around the village, and this means that superfast fibre optic broadband will be increasingly available in Houston in the coming weeks. Indeed, some parts of Houston can access super fast broadband providers now. To find out if your property can access the superfast network visit: http://www.digitalscotland.org/whereandwhen Road re-surfacing I am pleased that parts of Craigends have benefited from road resurfacing but I was very disappointed with the lack of communication to local residents about the road closures and knock on impact on bus provision in the area. I raised these concerns immediately and notices were then displayed, but this was little consolation to those who had already missed buses due to having not knowing they would have an extra distance to walk. Some elderly residents were not able to get to a bus stop at all and better communication needs to be part of these important improvement works. Local Area Committee As Chair of the Local Area Committee I was delighted that we were recently able to support grant applications from a large number of fantastic local voluntary groups. Here in Houston we were able to contribute towards new lighting in the Carrick Centre, provide a contribution to a family fun day at Crosslee Park and help with funding for the Duke of Edinburgh Award initiatives at our local schools. Crosslee Park Improvements Many residents will have spotted how well used the new improved Crosslee Play Park has been - a great credit to the hardworking volunteers who have raised funds for the park. I was pleased to propose £8000 of resources be allocated to install a new path within the park as it can become quite mucky to get to the equipment. We are also looking at improvements to the entrance. The team also carry out minor repairs or DIY tasks to make residents homes cosier. Currently LEAP has funding available specifically to carry out practical tasks for vulnerable people in our communities to improve their comfort at home. Kilbarchan - August 1915 41 41 Robert Houston Lind lived in High Barholm until his family moved to Australia in 1910, sailing from London to Brisbane on the ‘Perthshire’. The family lived in Charlotte St, Brisbane. His father died before the war and his mother is listed as his next of kin. He was working as a plumber when he volunteered in 1914 and stated that he had previously joined the Scouts at the age of eight (in Kilbarchan) and the Australian Citizen Force at the age of 16. He enlisted in the 15th Battalion of the Australian infantry. Lind went to Gallipoli with his battalion and died in an uphill attempt by the Australians to break out of the bridgehead in which they had been trapped since April. A enquiry in Cairo after the Gallipoli withdrawal investigated his death: ‘Lind and witness were in the same section. They were in the charge on 8th August. Lind was hit in the shoulder going over the first gully in the charge. He became paralysed, could not move. Pte.W.Walsh, A Company, 16th Battalion, tried to get Lind in, but Walsh’s leg was smashed and he could do nothing. The first words witnesses heard after the charge was that poor old Lind was done for.’ Robert Lind was the first former Kilbarchan Scout to be killed. He has no grave and is commemorated on the Lone Pine Memorial. Weaver’s Cottage (NTS) As this is the Scottish Government’s Year of Food and Drink, the Weaver’s Cottage transformed some of the rhubarb from the cottage garden into jam, which won a prize at the Kilbarchan Agricultural Show. The show is one of the oldest organisations in Kilbarchan, dating back to 1828: in the 1960s the show took place in the field now occupied by Taylor Avenue and since then has been in a field at Monklands farm. Rhubarb was traditionally used as a dyestuff and the photo shows rhubarb dyed wool and knitting and rhubarb jam. Kilbarchan Bridge Club Congratulations to the new MP for Kilbarchan and Lochwinnoch, Mhairi Black, for graduating from Glasgow University with a first class honours degree in politics, although I have something to celebrate myself as I have also just graduated, from Glasgow University, with a Post Graduate Certificate in Healthcare Chaplaincy, which was a part time course. Mhairi’s office is nearly open and she can be contacted by constituents using e mail on mhairi.black. mp@parliament.uk, or on 0141 628 5456 (temporary). She has also had her first advice surgeries in Kilbarchan and Lochwinnoch. It was a pleasure to attend Kilbarchan Agricultural Show this year, which thankfully, unlike Lilias Day, enjoyed good weather. My ward has more farms and small steadings in it than any other within Renfrewshire Council, so it was good to be able to meet the local farming community and hear their concerns. Listening to the views of constituents is a fundamental part of being a local councillor, and in that vein it was also very positive to attend a community meeting in the Scout Group over the summer of Habbies who want to look at regenerating the former petrol station site near Cartside Terrace. At the last full council meeting of Renfrewshire Council prior to the summer the administration agreed a programme to invest in community halls, four out of five of which were in Paisley. Both the McKillop Institute and the Steeple Hall were left out of this programme, which I very much regret. Kilbarchan and Lochwinnoch council taxpayers more than pay their share, and we need to invest to keep vital village facilities. My advice surgery in Kilbarchan is on the 2nd Wednesday of the month in the Steeple Hall at 7:45pm, and my advice surgery in Lochwinnoch is on the 4th Wednesday of the month in the McKillop at 7:30pm, excluding July. Habbie Sparrowhawk eyes up Doig Burger at Kilbarchan Agricultural Show Councillor Doig visited the Kilbarchan Agricultural Show with his wife recently and had a great time. They visited the Birds of Prey Stall where Andy had his picture taken with this beauty, a Sparrow Hawk, apparently. Andy’s wife thought that the photo looked like the bird could be saying “Looks like lunch, can I get mayo and fries with him”. The Bridge Club meets in the Steeple Hall in Kilbarchan on Tuesday evenings at 7.30pm. Some of our members have been introduced to the game recently at classes in the village and some are older hands. All are welcome! The first meeting of the session is on Tuesday, 1st September. Kilbarchan East Church Tots’ Resumes at 9.15 on Monday 31 August. The club is for children of 3 years and under and takes place every Monday in the East Church halls, Steeple Square.
