LONG ROAD
RECONSTRUCTION
PROJECT
SCHEDULED TO
BEGIN IN APRIL
Construction of the Long Road
Reconstruction project is scheduled to
begin in April. The purpose of this
project is to reconstruct a corridor that
was originally paved in 1972 and is
now at the end of its service life,
requiring a full depth reconstruction.
Other project goals, established
through neighborhood input, include
improving the drainage, mitigating the
winter icing, adding landscaping to
enhance the corridor appearance,
maintaining the rural nature of the
area, improving trail connectivity,
increased pedestrian safety, and
guardrail replacement to meet current
standards.
In addition to the roadway
improvements of the Long Road
project, the Village partnered with
Southgate Water District to
incorporate the needed replacement of
Southgate’s waterline into the project.
This effort to proactively complete the
utility improvements concurrent with
the road closures and ahead of final
paving activity, will result in
minimizing the impacts to the
traveling public and local
neighborhoods.
The project was originally bid in May
2016, but due to low bidder
participation and high prices received,
the bids were rejected and the project
was rebid in January 2017. The result
was higher participation and a project
cost savings of over $2 million dollars.
The project cost is $6,700,000
including Southgate’s portion of
$1,100,000 for the water main
replacement. The Village’s portion for
funding the project is part of the
Village’s annual Capital Improvement
Program (CIP) budget.
ROAD CLOSURE
INFORMATION
During the initial utility work the road
will remain open, however in April the
road will be closed due to the nature
of the work and limited width of the
public right-of-way. The closure is
scheduled from April to December
2017 so the project can be completed
in a safe and efficient manner.
The closures within the project limits
will occur in phases with each phase
extending between the two nearest side
street intersections. Variable message
boards will be utilized to post dates of
closures specific to the phases of
construction as activities progress.

be notified of each phase and whether
to access their property from the east
or from the west. Emergency response
agencies will also be notified of each
phase and associated closure.
