Reminder to Government:
We’re No 1 for life sciences
A fresh drive to promote Cambridge
Biomedical Campus (CBC) as the
capital of UK life science has begun.
Cambridge University Health
Partners (CUHP) has agr ed to
co laborate with the campus
developers to promote and manage it,
marketing the fast-growing site
nationa ly and internationa ly.
It comes after the Government
a nounced its industrial strategy last
month, pledging su port for science
and i novation, with a £4.7bn funding
pot fo research an development.
Oxford has already lai down a
marker by a tracting Danish
pharmaceuticals firm Novo Nordisk,
which dismi sed lingering doubts
over Brexit by a nouncing that it was
to invest £ 15mi lion over the next
decade in a new research centre that
wi l employ 1 0 scientists, who wi l
focus on finding novel treatments for
type two diabetes.
Now Cambridge – where the
development of AstraZeneca’s global
R&D HQ alone represents an
investment of £ 30mi lion – is k en to
reinforce its role to the Government
as the leading light in the sector, able
to a tract new busine s, jobs
and investment.
Joint developers Liberty Property
Trust and Countryside have now
a nounced that CUHP – which brings
together the university and thr e
health trusts – wi l take on an interim
role of managing inquiries from those
joining th expanding campus
Malcolm Lowe-Lauri, executive
director at CUHP, said: “We believe
Cambridge is the capital of the UK’s
life science and is one of the key cities
ready to lead the country’s future
economic su ce s. The list of
companies and organisations based in
and around the city shows this is no
idle boast.
“On the campus alone we are home
to the University of Cambridge, the
new global researc headquarters for
AstraZeneca, the world famous
A d e n b r o ke ’s Hospi tal,
GlaxoSmithKline and the MRC
Laboratory of Molecular Biology.
“By working with Liberty Property
Trust and Countryside an developing
our strong links to the wider
bioscience and technology clusters in
Cambridge, we wi l ensure the
campus continues to deliver new jobs,
investment and o portunities to
Cambridge and the East of England.”
Jeane te Walker, who previously
marketed the campus for the
developers, has moved to a role on the
Science Park.
Andrew Blevins, managing director
of Liberty Property Trust, said: “It’s
important for people to know that we
are open for busine s to companies
wishing to benefit from locating at
CBC. CUHP are we l placed to talk to
potential o cupiers about
the co laboration and networking
o portunities that already exist
at CBC.”
Andrew Ca rington, managing
director of Countryside, a ded: “As
w enter the next phase of the
campus’s expansion we remain
focused on raising awarene s of the
o portunities available to work
alongside world cla s healthcare
companies in what is rapidly
becoming a global centre of
exce lence. We have agr ed an initial
short-term co laborative a proach
with CUHP to continue the promotion
of the campus and kick-star the
expansion, a lowing time for a more
comprehensive promotional strategy
to be developed and implemented.”
The campus has pla ning
permi sion for an a ditional 75, 0
square metres, th equivalent of 14
Wembley pitches, of new clinical and
science-related business during phase
tw of its development. Phase thr e
wi l expand the campus further.
Welcome
My month
FROM THE
EDITOR
Spring has officially sprung... the evenings are finally
getting that bit lighter and so is my wardrobe thankfully. I’m
completely obsessing over gingham and frills thanks to Zara.
Take a look at our fashion section starting on page 45 for a bit
of seasonal inspiration.
Elsewhere in this issue we’ve covered the much-anticipated
Tamburlaine opening (page 18), an overview of the racing
season at Newmarket Racecourses (page 34), a roundup of
where to take the little ones over the Easter half-term (page
36) and lots more local goings on (page 30).
Talking of racing, I’m currently trying to source an outfit
for the Guineas festival, taking place on 6th & 7th May at
Newmarket’s Rowley Mile. We will be there scouting out the
best dressed and bringing you the details in our June issue. In
the meantime, May’s issue will welcome this year’s top racing
trends from the region’s leading local fashion retailers.
If you have any exciting upcoming events, new openings
or something local to shout about, please do email me at
samantha.nice@velvetmag.co.uk as we love to keep in the
loop.
Have a great Easter!
Our
Honest Burgers
Honest Burgers, who already have 18 restaurants in London,
have now opened on Cambridge’s Corn Exchange Street. Their
ethos is based entirely upon delivering simple burgers using
great British produce – hence the honesty! Choose from dry
aged beef, free range chicken or market vegetables before
considering your additional fillings. All are served with their
rosemary salted chips.
Be sure to check out their brunch menu which is graced with
an abundance of delicious delights. From their Honest Brunch
to the classic Brunch Burger, they even have granola bowls and
smashed avocado with eggs on sourdough! Oh… and they also
do takeaway!
Easter Lamb
A popular choice for Easter Sunday lunch,
but are you picking the best cut?
Spring lamb is also often referred
to as early, or summer lamb and is
typically around 3-5 months old.
The meat is very tender and is
best eaten between February
and June. The meat gains a
slightly better taste later in the
season due to it being able to
graze longer. When looking for
the best piece, opt for the slightly
pink lamb. The older the meat, the
darker it is, so be sure to avoid any
brown bits. For roasting, the best parts
are the leg or loin.
New Opening
Explore the abundance of unique offerings
Written by Samantha Nice
Take
a trip to
Tamburlaine
at Cambridge’s latest boutique hotel
Following much anticipation, Tamburlaine, located in the heart
of Cambridge, is finally open. If you’ve not already seen or heard,
Tamburlaine is the city’s newest hotspot. Situated close to the
railway station, it’s just a short stroll into the city itself and a stone’s
throw from many of Cambridge’s top attractions. With unique
character and local charm, Tamburlaine is far more than just a
new hotel. Named after a play by Corpus Christi College Fellow,
Christopher Marlowe, this 155-room hotel is O’Callaghan Hotel
Group’s first UK venture. General Manager, Zac Pearse, has
previously overseen several leading London hotels. “We want
locals to see Tamburlaine as their hotel; a place where they can
come for a special dinner with family, cocktails or afternoon tea
with friends, or grab a coffee and sandwich from our deli on their
way to the station. Tamburlaine is a vibrant place for everyone
to enjoy!” Zac said ahead of the opening. Bryan O’Sullivan
Studio, based in Shoreditch are to thank for the stunning interior.
O’Sullivan has worked for an enviable list of leading interior firms
including David Collins, Martin Brudnizski and Selldorf Architects
to name a few. Aside from their stunning decor and distinct design,
what makes Tamburlaine a little different is their four opposing
food and drink offerings, all of which are united by their quality.
Tamburlaine rewrites the rules of hotel dining with menus which
are aimed at distinctly different moods. The name behind it all is
Alan Dann, their Executive Chef whose vast experience has proved
invaluable. Alan has worked for the likes of The Waterside Inn,
Restaurant Pierre Gagnaire and Restaurant Michel Geurard and
has fronted numerous Michelin starred restaurants in his career to
date meaning he has all the Tamburlaine needs to thrive.
1. THE BRASSERIE
The Brasserie boasts an accessible menu which is focused
entirely upon offering seasonal and locally-sourced delights.
The atmosphere is informal and has a chilled vibe thanks to
the pendant lighting, relaxed leather banquettes, floor to ceiling
windows and open kitchen which is a nice touch. The all-day menu
is graced with delicious dishes from breakfast through to lunch and
dinner. From pigeon and free-range pork to Norfolk Black chicken
and a Barnsley chop, the menu is bursting with tempting treats.
The Brasserie also houses a horseshoe shaped cocktail bar stocked
with everything from spirits and beers to wines and speciality
cocktails made by the resident mixologist. Make ours the
King’s College Spritz with Cambridge Gin!
Executive Chef, Alan Dann
2. THE GARDEN ROOM
Laden with lush green foliage, The Garden Room is ideal for
those fancying a spot of afternoon tea or a sip of champagne.
It’s a luxurious yet welcoming space which is perfect for a special
occasion or celebration as well as light lunches or sharing plates.
Decorated in a Colonial style with velvet sofas and ornate wallpaper,
it certainly brings something a little different.
New Opening
3. THE LIBRARY
If you’re seeking a little peace and quiet, The Library is where
you should be headed. The leather armchairs, period prints and
inviting open fire give a ‘private club’ feel, whilst their menu is
jam-packed with sweet and savoury delights, speciality teas,
signature coffees and fine wines.
4. STEAM
Say hello to Steam - Tamburlaine’s very own in-house deli. It
sits as a stark contrast to the previous three and has a modern
and quirky feel. The neon lighting and vibrant tiles add a sense
of freshness - as does their health-conscious menu. From
handmade salad bowls and sandwiches to fresh yoghurt pots and
locally roasted coffee. It’s the ultimate pit stop for Cambridge
commuters to grab in a hurry.
Whilst takeaway options are their main speciality throughout
the day, Steam in the evening is transformed into a wine bar.
Take your pick from their never-ending list of wines and team
with one of their charcuterie and cheese boards. Their open-air
terrace is bound to be popular in the warmer months.
BREWING SOMETHING
SPECIAL
Hear about The Black Bull’s current spring menu and their
upcoming Steak Club from Head Chef, Andrew Price
The Black Bull, located in the tranquil village of Balsham, is just 10
miles from Cambridge city centre. The Black Bull, whose sister pub
is The Red Lion in Hinxton, has resided here ever since the 16th
Century and still holds an abundance of charming Grade II listed
features. Today, it is privately owned and boasts an AA rosette pub
restaurant and 5-bedroom accommodation as well as a front and
rear garden setting. Perfect for those al fresco drinks and dinners in
the warmer months which are thankfully just around the corner.
After just seconds of walking through the front door, there is an
immediate sense of homeliness. The period oak-panelling and
open fire as well as the welcoming faces give The Black Bull this
atmosphere. The bar itself has over 40 wines and 4 beers on pump
including their own label Red &
“The menu here
moves on every
2-3 months
to reflect the
changing seasons.”
Black and 3 rotating guest ales.
When it comes to food, their
menu is predominantly a mix of
both contemporary delights and
traditional classics. We caught
up with Head Chef, Andrew
Price to hear more about their
current menu and sample
the steak dishes from their Steak Club menu which launches this
month. “I have been at The Black Bull here in Balsham for nearly
3 years now but I have over 15 years’ experience. The menu here
moves on every 2-3 months to reflect the changing seasons. This
is a huge point of inspiration for me. We also pride ourselves on
offering locally-sourced produce as this makes a huge difference
to the taste and quality of the food. Not only am I inspired by
the seasons and produce on offer, I also look to bring something
different to our special boards as well as creating dishes which have
a slight twist,” Andrew tells us. Whilst Andrew and his team love
to experiment and try something new they still like to bring their
customers the traditional pub classics which everyone loves. “I
always have handmade burgers and pies from locally-sourced beef
on the menu as these are what people expect from a traditional
pub. We play around with different ideas like for British Pie Week
for example but it’s important for us to keep these classics on offer
all year round,” he adds. Alongside these, the team at The Black
Bull also hold specially themed ‘Village Nights’ which allow them
to bring a range of new dishes to the menu. “We have done Italian
and Portuguese themed nights in the past which have been really
popular with our locals and new customers,” Andrews says. “Our
manager, Marcello Di Mascio is Italian so it’s great to add this
element.”
Something new for The Black Bull is their new Steak Club which
begins this month. It will welcome an exclusive steak-focused menu
and will be on offer every Thursday, Friday and Saturday. “Listening
to our customers is really important to us which is why we have
made the decision to launch the Steak Club. It seemed like the
logical thing to do as they all love steak. We originally only had a
Sirloin option on the menu as well as occasionally putting on other
cuts as specials,” Andrew tells us. From sirloin and T-Bone to fillet,
ribeye and Chateaubriande, they really have got it covered. The
Steak Club is all about versatility and is aimed at those true steak
lovers. Choose your steak, say how you’d like it cooked and choose
what you’d like with it. All of their steak comes from Burtons just
a few miles down the road in Saffron Walden. “It’s great to be able
to have this on our doorstep as it enables us to get whatever our
customers would like. We are happy to offer cuts of steak which
aren’t listed on the menu with enough notice. We appreciate many
of our customers know exactly what they like and are extremely
passionate about their food so to be able to offer this flexibility is
great. Not only this, we plan on introducing some lesser known,
quality cuts to the menu as a way of letting people try something
new,” he concludes.
If you’re into your steaks. be sure to book a table and put your
requests in now. Oh and if steaks aren’t your thing, there will be
plenty of other delights to tempt you...
Walk with a fork
Huntingdon, walkers will embark on an eight
mile amble around the picturesque estate,
whilst indulging on fresh and tasty treats
from local food and drink producers at stops
along the way.
‘Walk with a Fork’ is the flagship event for
Ormiston Families, the East of England’s
leading family charity. Lady De Ramsey,
vice president of Ormiston Families, and
Lord De Ramsey have opened their home
and chosen one of their personal favourite
walks around their private estate. There are
some great suppliers lined up for this year’s
event, including: Aspall, The Village Deli, the
Allotment café, The Abbot’s Elm, Johnsons
delighted with the success ‘Walk with a Fork’
has had over the years and are especially
pleased to be bringing the event back to
Cambridgeshire this year. “We always look
forward to ‘Walk with a Fork’ and enjoying
the great local food and drink from East
Anglia and the beautiful scenery of the
countryside, all while raising vital funds which
allow us to continue our work with children,
young people and families throughout the
region. We are grateful to Lord and Lady
De Ramsey for having us at Abbots Ripton
Hall and to our sponsor, Aspall. We would
also like to thank Heidi from foodPark, Eat
Cambridge and the team from the Secret
Garden Party for their assistance.”
Proceeds from ‘Walk with a Fork’ will be used
to support Ormiston Families’ work providing
services to support children and young
people across East Anglia, helping to improve
their life chances. Identifying and responding
to the needs of children, whatever challenges
they face, the charity’s vision is of a world
in which every child will be loved, nurtured
and valued. There are still places available for
local food and drinks producers to supply the
SPRING AT
From their extensive home
and garden offering to their
seasonal spring menu and
upcoming seasonal events, take
a look at what’s happening at
Elveden Courtyard
Whilst they’re renowned for being the go-to hotspot over the
festive Christmas period, Elveden are actually raring to go all year
round.
Their home and garden shop is bursting with lots of exclusive
pieces. From wall prints and soft furnishings to eclectic gifts, clocks,
lighting and even kitchenware and furniture, there is lots to take
a look at. Carole Hazelwood, The Courtyard’s General Manager
spoke to us about what’s new this season. “We have lots of unusual
pieces here at The Courtyard this spring. The majority of our
buying was selected early this season and quite a lot of the stock
is now here. We like to create a unique shopping experience for
“Our aim is
always to reflect
good value for
money, through
good quality
items you will be
happy to give, or
keep for yourself.”
our customers which is why we
source lots of different suppliers,”
Carole says. This spring there
are lots of luxurious throws and
cushions which are great for
instantly updating your interior.
Wall prints and pictures are also
ideal for filling blank wall space as
are statement clocks.
When it comes to the kitchen,
the selection is vast. Champagne
gold is a key colour and the
cooking utensils are both eyecatching
and on-trend. Champagne gold complements the olive
wood pieces and add a touch of warmth. Crisp whites and muted
greys are another key colour palette when it comes to kitchenware.
“Our aim is always to reflect good value for money, through good
quality items you will be happy to give, or keep for yourself,” adds
Carole.
Life out in the garden should be starting to happen this month, and
we have selected some fantastic fresh garden inspired textiles. A
their range is based on the timeless classics of Royal Horticultural
great for making your garden a talking point this summer. Locallygrown
early April to late September every year at the Courtyard. The area
overlooks the outside eating area of the Courtyard making it a great
place to browse whilst you wait for your food to be served.
Talking of food, we also caught up with Head Chef, Mo Johansen,
to hear about what’s on the menu. “Seasonal local produce is always
at the forefront when I am creating new dishes. This is something
which has always been at the heart of Elveden as we have so much
available right on our doorstep and from other local suppliers,” he
tells us. “This spring I decided to go back to basics a little and opt for
good tasty food with honesty.” Their chicken and estate pheasant
terrine is served with their own Elvedenilli and their bangers and
mash is made using Elveden’s own potatoes, parsnips and celeriac.
Their sausages are made on site at the butchery and are also used
for the breakfast menu. “We change the menu in keeping with each
season to ensure our regular customers have something new to try.
Our special’s board is also updated every day and features gammon
steaks, local meats, traditional pies and seasonal fish as well as other
exciting creations!” Mo tells us.
Easter Weekend (14th - 17th April) will welcome numerous Easter
Racing
RACING AHEAD
Take a look at what the 2017 season at Newmarket Racecourses has in store
Spring is officially here. The daffodils are blooming, shop windows
are filling with colour and the temperatures are (hopefully!) rising.
For Newmarket, spring marks the start of another very exciting
racing season. We take a look at the key racing events coming up
this year...
SPRING
The racing season starts with the three-day bet365 Craven
Meeting, which takes place between the 18th and 20th April at
the Rowley Mile. If you’re a local resident with a CB8 postcode,
you will be able to get free entry to the races on Tuesday 18th
April - the perfect Easter Holiday activity with friends or the
family!
In May the season highlight returns, the QIPCO Guineas
Festival. Taking place on Saturday 6th and Sunday 7th May, the
two-day event boasts world-class racing, fabulous entertainment
and amazing hospitality. New at this year’s festival is the foodie
delights at The Winning Post Pavilion. Great British Bake Off
finalist, Ian Cumming will be providing guests with a signature
Afternoon Tea on the Saturday and on the Sunday there will be a
mouth-watering carvery menu, at this ultra-exclusive venue with
an incredible view.
Following the day of racing, this year’s Après Racing will feature
an exclusive headline set from the Official Festival Ambassador
and broadcasting legend, Johnny Vaughan.
If you’re attending the Guineas Festival with the kids, make sure
you visit the new Pony Club Zone. This area will be full of horsey
fun including Behind the Scenes Tours, Meet The Racehorse,
farriery demonstrations, a Mini Cinema and much more! There
will also be inflatables and face painting in the Family Enclosure
and pony rides on the Sunday.
Weddings
Luxury at Lanwades
Formerly owned by the Animal Health Trust since
1948, Lanwades Hall is now a luxury wedding venue
Located in the picturesque village of
Kentford, Lanwades Hall is a stunning
Grade II listed Edwardian manor house
surrounded by acres of parkland and
lavish gardens. With easy access from the
surrounding major roads (A11, A14 and
M11), it sits just off Newmarket’s prestigious
Bury Road. It is steeped in history as it was
built with the winnings of the 1898 Derby.
James Larnach commissioned it after his
horse, Jeddah won. Larnach’s £500 bet
saw a return of £5,450 and Jeddah was the
first horse to win the Derby at triple odds.
It is in fact rumoured that Jeddah is buried
in an unknown location in the grounds of
Lanwades Hall.
Newly reopened, Lanwades Hall now
functions as a unique wedding venue. The
house itself sits proudly at the end of the
extensive tree-lined driveway which is an
impressive welcoming for the guests and
really enables you to make an entrance.
Inside, there are 4 state rooms, all licensed
for civil ceremonies. Use these as you wish
and build your day around what suits you.
The Morning Room overlooks the peaceful
greenery. It’s the ideal blank canvas for you
to decorate. The Grand Dining Room is
the largest within the Hall and the original
oak panelling, mullioned windows and open
fireplace keep the venue true to its periodic
roots. The Drawing Room and The Old
Library are two other spaces which
offer a casual space for guests to relax.
When the weather permits, the gardens
and orchard are the perfect backdrop for
photos and drinks. The terrace is a splendid
sun trap during the summer and makes for
a fantastic hosting space for a BBQ and
cocktail bar.
From January 2018, Lanwades Hall will be
adding accommodation to their offering.
Their bridal suite will house a boutique
dressing room for the bridal party and a
master bedroom in the tower overlooking
the Sunken Garden. There are also an
additional 2 en suites for the family as well
as a private kitchen and dining area in the
‘Bridal Wing’.
Besides from being a wedding venue,
Lanwades Hall also have plans to house a
health and relaxation centre including the
‘Yoga Chamber’, as well as a range of beauty
treatments. Watch this space to find out
more later this year.
LOOK OUT
Article by Josh Tait
Keep your eyes peeled for our line up of must-see films,
up-and-coming musicians and the next big thing...
ROGUE ONE: A STAR WARS STORY
Director: Gareth Edwards
Stars: Felicity Jones, Diego Luna, Alan Tudyk
Release Date: 10th April
The first of Disney’s hotly anticipated Star Wars Anthology series
starts at the beginning, with a prequel to the original Star Wars
trilogy. Felicity Jones’, as young renegade Jyn Erso leads a rag tag
band of misfits on a dangerous mission to steal a set of plans for
the original Death Star, in a plot that manages to feel fresher than
2015’s The Force Awakens, tie ins with past films notwithstanding.
At times it feels a little purposeless – new characters are introduced
at will, with little in the way of character development – but an
X-Wing-tastic final battle and plenty of thrills throughout make for
a more than worthy entry into the Star Wars canon.
SPIDER-MAN: HOMECOMING
Directors: Jon Watts
Stars: Robert Downey Jr., Tom Holland, Marisa Tomei
Release Date: 7th July
‘What, another reboot?’ I hear you cry. Thankfully, Tom Holland (the
third man to play Peter Parker in recent times) will not be forced
to wearily retread Spider-Man’s well known origin story yet again.
Playing a younger iteration of the character, Holland’s appearance
in Captain America: Civil War promises a lighter take on the webbed
wonder than Maguire and Garfields – and we may finally see
Spidey’s famous penchant for wisecracking done justice on the silver
screen. With Michael Keaton on board as the high flying Vulture,
Homecoming also promises a sizeable number of airborne action
sequences, although whether he will be as memorable as Spider-
Man 1 & 2’s Green Goblin and Doc Ock remains to be seen.
RIXO London is an exciting and
they left their buying careers at ASOS
to follow their dream of creating a
feminine relaxed label with a refined
When they contacted me a year ago, we
had a lot in common. My shop matched
their brand vision, I loved the clothes
and the 70’s vibe, and I was impressed
with their passion and drive. It’s a great
partnership as the brand sells really
well for us and the label has gone from
strength to strength. Subsequently they
have signed a deal with Net-a-Porter
Fashion
With spring finally here, we catch up with
Hayley Attridge, owner at Saffron Walden’s
fashion boutique, blue, to see what you
should be buying into for this season
BANISH THOSE WINTER BLUES
Located on Saffron Walden’s King Street,
blue is an independent women’s fashion
boutique specialising in elegant, and
predominantly, casual wear. Hayley fills
her petite shop with a variety of clothing,
accessories and shoes from a hand-picked
range of brands meaning she really is able
to offer something unique. We popped
in to take a look at some of her latest
collections.
Q: WHAT TRENDS HAVE YOU BOUGHT INTO
FOR THIS SEASON?
A: For spring/summer this year, I have
invested into a lot of yellow. It’s a fantastic
colour for the coming season and makes
a change from those dark wintery hues
we have been used to over the last few
months. I have some great pieces in store
at the moment and I’ve opted for colours
that I think will sit well together. Pink
is another which I have backed for the
coming season - it’s everywhere at the
moment and it’s surprisingly very versatile.
Bright colours are something everyone
should invest in when the weather starts
to lift. When it comes to pattern, there is
lots of gingham in store. Frills and ruffles
are another which will be seen a lot in blue
for the coming months. They did well for
us this winter and it’s great to see some
of the summery adaptations of this trend.
Statement sleeves are also everywhere
at the moment. I just love the big flute
sleeves. Scarves are always really popular
with both my new and returning customers
and I have some lovely pompom ones in at
the moment.
Q: HOW ARE THESE IN KEEPING WITH YOUR
STYLE AT BLUE?
A: My go-to line for blue is ‘fine everyday
style that takes you beyond the season’. I
always try to buy in keeping with current
trends but ones that are feminine and easy
to wear. I am not afraid of colour and I tend
to buy certain colours from certain brands.
I am a little pattern phobic but always try
to bring something a bit quirky.
Q: WHERE DO YOU GET YOUR INSPIRATION
FROM WHEN LOOKING FOR NEW PIECES?
A: As some of you may be aware, I do most
of my buying with 4 customers in mind.
This enables me to buy sensibly and keep
a similar theme throughout. It’s almost like
a capsule wardrobe I guess. ‘Maggie’ is my
more mature customer, as is Mel. Emma is
Q: WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE PIECE IN
STORE AT THE MOMENT?
A: It would have to be SET’s leather
jacket in nightsky. It’s a lovely navy
colour and a real must-have for
inbetween seasons. It’s a slim fit and
made from 100% lambs leather. It’s
super soft and the silver zip detailing
gives it a nice edge.
SET Leather Jacket in Nightsky, £369
American Vintage and Rains. Winter is still
looking fairly bright. Yellow will become
slightly darker with more mustard shades
and cobalt blue is another favourite. Red is
also set to be a winter staple. I will also be
stocking more jewellery and unique gifting
pieces.
my mid-40s Mum and Megan is my 20+. I
have recently been buying in Copenhagen
which was fantastic. I found some really
exciting new brands which I can’t wait to
introduce here in Saffron Walden. Samsoe
& Samsoe is one which I am most excited
about. Be sure to watch out for this nearer
the winter. Another new brand I picked up
in Copenhagen is one called Coster. They
have some really unique feminine pieces
which I know will fly out.
Q: YES, WE KNOW IT’S EARLY... BUT WHAT ARE
YOUR PLANS FOR A/W17?
A: My plan is to introduce a few new brands
which I have been buying for already. I
will of course stick with my few favourites
too. These include Des Petits Hauts, SET,
Q: LASTLY, HOW IS YOUR ONLINE SHOP
DOING?
A: Online does really well for us. As I don’t
have a lot of each item, I am constantly
updating it with new stock which keeps
it looking fresh and on-trend. It’s a great
window for customers too as they can
browse what I have in at the moment. I get
quite a lot of my regulars opting for the
click and collect option. Be sure to check it
same designers but from previous seasons all
greatly reduced, plus lots of wonderful hats,
Beauty
It’s As Easy As
A, B, C...
You might be cramming your diet with all
your fruit and veg, but is your skincare
regime lacking vitamins? Samantha Nice
investigates why you should be applying
your vitamins topically...
Vitamin supplements in tablet form
are nothing new and many of us are
popping them in order to boost
our overall health. Vitamins
are vital in order to keep our
body functioning at its best
and certain deficiencies
can cause adverse effects
on our skin. Now is when
you should probably
reconsider your skincare
regime - your skin is the
body’s largest organ after
all. Have you noticed
just how many skincare
products are also packed
full of vitamins? They
are a key ingredient for
most brands due to their
extensive advantages
in combating varying
skin problems. “Over the
past 20 years, vitamins
have been creeping into our
everyday skin care products as
more is discovered about their
beneficial effects in preventing
and reversing the signs of ageing.
The latest research and technology
from Dermalogica shows that microencapsulating
these beneficial vitamins
ensures the ingredients are stabilised and
delivered deep into the skin’s layers where
they are most needed,” Mel Sunshine,
Dermalogica Professional Skin
Therapist and owner at Essential
Therapy in Barnham says.
Take a look at which vitamins are
advantageous to our skin and which
products you should be investing in:
VITAMIN A: A star for anti-ageing and a good all-rounder
In short, Vitamin A is a good all-rounder. Vitamin A (whose
derivatives are also referred to as retinoids) works by normalising
a range of skin functions meaning it is great for correcting specific
skin concerns like ageing and acne for example. “Vitamin A helps
increase cell renewal and turnover as well as stimulating new
collagen biosynthesis to help reverse the signs of skin ageing,”
explains Mel. “From the age of 30, we lose on average 1% of
collagen in our skin, which means that by the age of 50 we’ve lost
20% of our collagen, resulting in sagging, fine lines and wrinkles,”
she adds.
Vitamin A is the key ingredient for cult skincare brand Environ. Dr
Des Fernandes, founder and scientific director of Environ says,
“Ageing skin is a direct result of sun-induced Vitamin A deficiency.
Correct the deficiency and you’ll have more radiant skin.”
1. Environ Youth EssentiA Vita-Peptide C-Quence Serum 1, £91,
Salon @ Number 5, Newmarket & Cambridge
VITAMIN B: Best for reducing redness and hydration
Vitamin B, (specifically B3 and B5) are great for strengthening our
skin’s barrier, locking in moisture and replenishing our skin. It is also
said to help with inflammation and hyperpigmentation. It’s great
for those who suffer with sensitive skin and other skin concerns
such as uneven skin tone, acne and other unwanted redness or
pigmentation.
Beauty
4
VITAMIN C: Ideal for brightening and again, anti-ageing
Vitamin C is another which has been proven to combat wrinkles
and overall ageing. “It provides antioxidants which helps stimulate
collagen synthesis and treat hyperpigmentation which is
commonly found in an ageing skin,” Mel explains. Vitamin C is also
known to help protect and repair against free radical damage as
well as improving elasticity, boosting radiance and aiding firmness.
3. Murad Essential-C Day Moisture SPF30, £55, Feel Unique
4. Trish McEvoy Even Skin Vitamin C Cream, £52, Selfridges
5. REN Flash Rinse 1-Minute Facial with water activated Vitamin
C, £32, Space.NK, Cambridge
6. Clinique Fresh Pressed Daily Booster with Pure Vitamin C,
£25, Palmers, Bury St Edmunds
VITAMIN E: Essential for repair
11
7
8
“Vitamin E provides antioxidant benefits to minimise
environmental induced skin-ageing (smoking, pollution etc) and
helps reinforce the barrier lipid layer,” adds Mel. It’s fantastic for
repair which is why it is often found in treatment products such as
after-sun and other products for stretch marks and scarring.
7. Neal’s Yard Vitamin E & Avocado Night Cream, £21.50, Neal’s
Yard, Bury St Edmunds
8. The Body Shop Vitamin B Aqua Boost Sorbet, £14, The Body
Shop, Bury St Edmunds & Cambridge
VITAMIN COCKTAIL
10
12
Whilst many products contain one key vitamin ingredient, there
are also an abundance of rescue treatments which are packed full
of them all. Mel tells us about Dermlogica’s range. “Dermalogica
uses combinations of these micro-encapsulated vitamins in many
of their products, but my personal favourites are Multi-Vitamin
Power Serum which has a velvety complex, to smooth, firm and
treat hyperpigmentation and the Multi-Vitamin Power Firm which
combats visible lines around the eyes with a powerful infusion of
multivitamins and protective silicones. The Multi-Vitamin Power
Recover Masque is fondly known in the trade as ‘ambulance in a
tube’ for its healing antioxidant vitamins and ability to promote
healthy tissue regeneration.”
9
13
9. Dermalogica Multi-Vitamin Power Serum, £58,
10. Dermalogica Multi-Vitamin Power Firm, £39
11. Dermalogica Multi-Vitamin Power Recover Masque, £36, all
Sensational Skin
Jurgita, owner at Newmarket’s Little Beauty Box, talks
to us about mesotherapy and PRP (platelet-rich-plasma)
Whilst many of us are turning to extreme skin treatments such
as Botox and fillers, Jurgita explains that there are other less
obtrusive methods which can achieve just as impressive results.
“Both mesotherapy and PRP are methods used to improve
our skin’s overall appearance, whether that be tone, hydration,
elasticity, texture or perhaps another specific concern,” Jurgita
says. “Both are really popular treatments for us at The Little
Beauty Box and it’s great to be able to offer the choice of both.
I think it’s important to educate my clients about what these
treatments involve and how it’s a good idea to consider these
before more extreme treatments. Although both mesotherapy
and PRP still use needles, they’re not as deep as Botox injections
and are far more nourishing for the skin,” she adds.
MESOTHERAPY
Mesotherapy is a hyaluronic-based skin treatment which is used
to target anti-ageing, firming, lightening, acne, stretch marks and
cellulite as well as being used for facelifts and aiding hair growth.
It provides the skin with a special cocktail of nutrients which
help to boost the skin’s appearance as well as helping it to regain
elasticity, radiance and improving texture. Mesotherapy is a nonsurgical
treatment which involves injecting this special blend of
nutrients directly into the mesoderm – the middle layer of your
skin. Treatments are given in courses of 4, 6 or 10 sessions which
can be undertaken weekly.
PRP
PRP (Platelet-rich-plasma) is a completely natural treatment
which requires no surgical intervention or chemical ingredients.
Much like mesotherapy, it’s great for eliminating a wide range of
skin concerns. The treatment involves extracting the plateletrich
plasma from your blood, much like a simple blood test. It is
to you is to take yourself out of your comfort zone, meet new people, try a different
sport, engage different muscles and you never know you may actually enjoy it!
You could enter a race whether that is a 5K Parkrun or a half or full marathon, an
Dan Hudson, personal trainer at
Abbeycroft Leisure’s new Skyliner Sports
Centre explains why technique is crucial
in achieving your fitness goals.
“I often see members learn weight training techniques
through friends or others in the gym which may not be
safe or correct. Poor form or training technique can lead
to serious injury that may set you back months so it’s
important to get it right.
My best piece of advice is to always have a goal then
develop a plan to reach that goal and understand the
correct form for each element to maximise your training.
As a beginner it is always worth speaking to a gym
instructor and have a plan written out for you. These are
free in most gyms along with a full induction which can take
the fear element away from anyone new to the gym.
Considering the use of a personal trainer would be the next
step. They can support and monitor you throughout your
journey ensuring you are on the right path to reach those
goals, or have your form checked, alongside a new plan
which is fun and challenging.
Next time you’re heading to the gym, think form, posture,
tempo, technique. Are you working towards your goal? A
goal without a plan is just a dream.”
How Can Yoga Help?
Yoga teacher and health & wellness advisor, Carole Baker explains
The effect of yoga on physical and psychological stress continues
to be one of the most widely studied outcomes in the yoga
research world. This is likely due to the fact that stress,
particularly when chronic, has the potential to harm all of
the major systems in the body and that yoga practises that
emphasise deep breathing, release and relaxation appear
to be uniquely effective in mitigating the stress response. It
is said that stress literally strangles our body and will always
manifest itself somewhere, perhaps you can identify what
causes you to feel stressed and where your body displays
etc. from migraines, headaches, IBS, back pain to heart
conditions, asthma and recurrent coughs and colds?
If you want to learn how and where stress affects you then
you definitely need to start yoga! The postures (asanas) of
yoga are said to work individual muscles, joints, organs and
systems of the body e.g. lymphatic, circulatory, digestive
etc. and for a system of wellbeing that has been around
thousands of years its fantastic to me as a yoga teacher that
the wonders of modern science is finally proving it works.
TOP TIPS TO TREAT STRESS:
· Slow your breathing rate down to 5 breaths per minute (most
people breathe at 10 - 15 breaths a minute!) this is proven to
lower blood pressure, heart rate, cortisol and also improve your
immune system’s functioning.
· Practice the top 5 yoga poses for stress relief: upward facing dog
pose, child’s pose, shoulder stand, plough and bridge.
De-Stress with Inspiral Group
Inspiral Group is volunteer-led organisation which hosts regular
spiritual and holistic themed events across Cambridge. We caught
up with therapist Kyrstyna to hear about the effects of stress and
how their groups and workshops can help...
Our fast-paced lives can often lead to a build up of stress, but how
can we take time out to relax when there seems to be so much to
do all the time?
Fundamentally, what is stress? Well-known author and wellbeing
guru, The Barefoot Doctor, describes stress as a strain placed on
the body and organs which causes you to constantly subconsciously
grip your muscles tightly; this results in a restricted blood, fluid
and energy flow which in turn causes the symptoms of stress.
He suggests that in fact this muscle gripping is simply a habit and
that with practice we can break it; much like giving up smoking
or cutting down sugar. It’s an interesting idea. Many experts in
the field agree and suggest that we should begin to think more
holistically about stress.
Krystyna Newman, Facilitator of Cambridge’s Inspiral Group,
a personal development network said, “The obvious antidote to
stress is self awareness and relaxation, yet so many of us don’t take
enough time to focus on this. Joining a
supportive network such as Inspiral
can help you on your journey of self
discovery and achieving a holistic
balance in life.”
Alternative Touch
Lisa Jackson, reflexologist and holistic practitioner, asks what is
stress and why is reflexology good for it?
WHAT IS STRESS?
Stress is the feeling of being under too much mental or emotional
pressure. Pressure turns into stress when you feel unable to cope.
Mental health issues may be linked to or exacerbated by the level of
stress a person is under.
WHY IS REFLEXOLOGY GOOD FOR STRESS?
Long-term chronic stress is bad for the body and can result in poor
health and wellbeing not only on an emotional level, but also on a
physical level. Long-term stress can affect many systems in the
body and is thought to be responsible for many illnesses. During
times of acute stress adrenalin and cortisol are released in much
higher levels than required by the body. High levels of cortisol
can cause many side effects, lower immunity and inflammatory
responses and slow down the wound healing process. By letting
the body relax properly, reflexology allows the stress to lessen and
allow some of the dysfunctional areas of the body to rebalance.
Reflexology works on all systems in the body (a holistic treatment).
Reflexology is an amazing non-intrusive treatment. After a
reflexology treatment, you are left feeling relaxed, you may
sleep better, you might notice your mood may improve and your
general level of wellbeing is increased. You might notice other
improvements although this happens on an individual basis.
In times of stress it might seem like an impossibility to take time out
of your hectic schedule however, taking the time for yourself to
have a regular reflexology treatment may help you gain control
over your work and social life and find a healthy balance.
WELLBEING DIARY
MONDAY
I always start the day with a 20-minute meditation and
a cup of green tea as it sets me up mentally for the day. I
have been practising this for the last four years and it has
definitely helped me through some challenging times!
Then it’s off for an early morning yoga session at the Boiler
House, this fits in perfectly with my timetable as I head to
the office straight after.
Other days before breakfast, I like to take a walk, I often
combine this with my meditation especially in the summer
taking full adcantage of living in the beautiful Suffolk
countryside. It is the perfect start to the day. I need to get
my body moving be it with an intense workout or a gentle
walk before I can even contemplate eating breakfast.
Breakfast is usually eggs or another protein-based affair.
I save the sourdough for a treat at the weekends. I’m not
saying that this is right for everyone as we are all unique
and need to find what works for us. Usually, it’s another
walk - just a quick ten minutes post-breakfast. This is a
little tip I picked up after spending a week on a bootcamp.
Where possible, I always try to add in a little stroll after
eating every meal.
Mondays always consist of a bootcamp session in the
evening. Working out with a group certainly gives me a
huge endorphin hit! I call it my happy place.
Working out later means that I usually have a late-ish lunch
and post-bootcamp I will grab a snack such as cold chicken
with some carrot sticks and a bit of hummus. I usually find
that I am not really hungry having had my main meal midafternoon.
TUESDAY
Tuesday kicks off with an early morning session with my
PT. I have two sessions a week; one is usually high intensity
with short sharp bursts of working out to my maximum.
This often involves gloves and pads - definitely my
favourite! I am usually buzzing all day afterwards and I still
get all my walks in too!
Health
Take a look at what a week for Alison Hall,
co-owner at Liberte Fitness, looks like in food and fitness
WEDNESDAY
Wednesday is bootcamp again, I go to four sessions a
week. I prefer to exercise outside after I fell in love with
it six years ago. I’ve carried it on ever since as to me it
doesn’t even feel like exercise and it’s a non-negotiable in
my timetable!
THURSDAY
Thursday is a double session with PT in the morning,
followed by a park session in the evening. The early session
will usually be weights-based. This is something that I have
got into of late and something I am really enjoying as well
as seeing great results from.
FRIDAY
Friday kicks off with an early morning class - usually spin.
It’s also a ‘run day’ when the lighter evenings arrive. A
group of us head to Mount Road in Bury St Edmunds early
evening and do a bit of hill training. This is something
co-owner and head trainer at Liberte Fitness, Tony started
a few years back It kicks into action every spring and again
it’s great to train with others.
SATURDAY
Saturday is always a morning park session which is
sometimes preceded by the Park Run at Nowton Park.
We cheekily dub this the ‘dirty double’!
SUNDAY
Sunday is rest day - well kind of! I still do plenty of walking,
especially post-lunch. Some weeks I head to Needham
Market first thing for the Great Local Run around the
lake. This is a 5k held weekly by a group of volunteers very
similar to the way the Park Run operates with all levels
taking part and a smaller 2k route for smaller children or
those not ready for the full 5km.
Sunday is also prep day where I write a food plan, and shop
and prep as much in advance as possible. This is invaluable
to helping me achieve my exercise goals for the week.
Being part-owner of an outdoor fitness company and
someone who has found her exercise mojo later on in life
gives me a completely different perspective. I have real
empathy for those that struggle when it comes to nutrition
and exercise as I have been that person a great deal of my
life. The turning point for me was finding something I really
loved doing and making it a part of my life. Yes the clichés
are right - it is a lifestyle not a short term fix.
Find something you love doing as it will become a part of
your normal routine and won’t feel like a hardship.
Drink plenty of water. I carry my bottle with me
everywhere and continually sip it throughout the day.
Plan your food for the week. Be sure to shop and prepare
so you always have something tasty and healthy to hand.
Nutrition is key - you can’t out train a bad diet. Believe me
I’ve tried!
Change it up! Every so often I look for events and different
classes to try. It adds variety and something to aim for.
Meditate daily and walk as much where possible. Exercise
doesn’t have to be extreme and there are so many health
benefits to walking and getting as much fresh air as
possible!
National
Gardening Week
National Gardening Week is the ideal time for us to
10TH-16TH
APRIL
give our gardens a little TLC ready for the summer
The week itself celebrates gardening and hundreds upon
hundreds of people, companies and charitable organisations
are getting involved. This year’s main focus is to help new
gardeners and home owners to get their plants to grow,
thrive and not fade out before the season is over.
HERE ARE SOME SIMPLE TIPS TO START YOU ON
YOUR GARDENING JOURNEY:
There are several types of flowers you can plant; annuals
and perennials are the most well-known. Annuals are the
easiest plants to grow as they flower within 10 – 12 weeks
and then die by the end of the year. This way, you don’t have
to worry about pulling up a plant that might re-flower when
you are doing your weeding in the earlier parts of the year.
Perennials are great to use as they re-flower every year, but
remember where you have planted them so you don’t pull
them up before they have re-flowered.
Neptune, Bury St Edmunds
If you don’t have a lot of space if your garden, then pots
will become your best friend. Potted plants are very eye
catching, create instant colour and are easy to maintain.
If you are feeling particularly inspired, then you could always
plant your own fruit and veg and start a small herb garden.
Corner off a space of your garden to dedicate to this and
make sure that the soil is reasonably dry when starting. Do
your research on which plants to grow together and the
time and growing conditions for each one.
Lawn maintenance is the key to most gardens – never mow
the lawn when it is too wet, you just end up with a sludgy
mess if you do. The key is to let it dry out for a few days
and mow it on a relative high level, after a few days go over
it again on a lower level to get a neater cut. Create the
signature lawn lines by mowing in alternate directions and
for a greener turf invest in some good quality grass seed.
inundated with visitors. We went to take a
welcoming barn.
Q: TELL US A LITTLE MORE ABOUT YOUR
BACKGROUND WITH INTERIOR DESIGN.
A: I’ve always had a passion for interiors and
gained a diploma in Interior Design whilst
living in Essex. I then went on to have my
own showroom in East London where I
stocked similar pieces to what I am now
stocking here at Strive for Design. I then
gave this up to work closer with my husband
and his building contractors business and
following the arrival of my children, there
was just no time for my own business. My
husband and I moved to Newmarket with
4 of our 5 boys around 8 years ago due to
their education and our racehorses at the
time.
I have always loved homes, interiors and
even buildings and architecture. I have
designed several homes and sourced a large
amount of interior schemes. I love designing
and piecing ideas together. After working
for various property investors over the last
few years, it gave me the confidence and
motivation to set up my own business again.
This is when Strive for Design came into
action.
Q: WHAT WAS YOUR VISION WHEN OPENING
STRIVE FOR DESIGN?
A: I really wanted to get back into the
industry as I am so passionate about it.
I wanted to offer the area a range of
furniture, lighting, accessories and other
homewares which aren’t readily available
online or perhaps in one place. I love
sourcing different items and seeing which
work well together. I wanted to construct a
showroom which my customers and clients
could visit and be inspired by. I am all about
offering the ‘wow’ factor. It’s really great to
be able to offer an abundance of pieces all
under one roof and without having to travel
too far. If you want to be successful and for
your customers to come back, you have to
offer something different... I believe I have
just that.
Q: WHAT BRANDS DO YOU STOCK?
A: I stock a really varied portfolio of brands
which are from all over the world. I think
this is what really makes my showroom
unique. I go to numerous different buying
events and I’m always on the look out for
new brands to stock. Some of my favourite
brands are Culinary Concepts, LSA Glass,
RV Astley, Coachouse and Brian Yates -
whose wallpapers are absolutely beautiful.
All of the stock I choose is unique and I only
buy in small quantities as it’s great to keep
things fresh. Although I have a particular
style, my showroom boasts lots of eclectic
pieces which would work perfectly in most
homes.
Q: YOU ALSO OFFER A DESIGN
CONSULTATION SERVICE, WHAT DOES THIS
INVOLVE?
A: I have undertaken lots of projects over
the last few years and it’s something I
love doing. I am currently working on 3
different projects; a show flat, a bathroom
and a kitchen. All of the building work is
carried out by my husband and his business
Construction Housing Renovations (CHR).
Between us both, we’re a dream team.
He has the building and construction
capabilities and I have the design flair.
CHR was originally based in London but
much more of his work is locally around
East Anglia now.
Q: WHERE DO YOU LOOK FOR INSPIRATION?
A: I read a lot of homes and interiors
magazines and I adore Kelly Hoppen. My
favourite app is definitely HOUZZ (www.
houzz.co.uk). I recommend it to so many of
my clients as it gives you the option to look
at various rooms and designs before making
the decision yourself.
Q: WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE
PIECE IN THE SHOWROOM AT THE
MOMENT?
A: It would have to be the grey
leather faux chair. It’s a one-off
bespoke piece which is very modern
and on-trend. It would look good in
any room in any house.
Q: WHAT ARE YOUR PLANS FOR THE
COMING YEAR?
Since November, I’ve had a fantastic
response already but I would very much like
to stay in my small barn location for now.
I would perhaps consider expanding in to
our outbuildings in the future however. I
would love to help more people improve
their homes as I love a challenge. I plan
to continue to research and improve my
current stock and brand portfolio and I plan
to have an even wider range. In the summer
I will be stocking lots more outdoor pieces
such as fire pits and garden furniture. This
will be displayed here in my own garden.
I am also working on expanding my
selection of fabrics and wallpaper as well as
looking at ordering through my website.
I currently take orders through Instagram
and Facebook and this works really well for
me for now. Alongside this, I am looking
into customised packaging which I hope to
source from India. It will help women over
there in a refuge who make beautiful paper
products. All proceeds go straight back to
them and their families. My current design
is a map of Newmarket with the clock
tower, Tattersalls, Newmarket Racecourses,
the Queen’s Statue and The National
Horseracing Museum as pin points for the
area.I would also like to start adding images
on Pinterest and HOUZZ.
LASTING LEGACY
Landmark home, The Tree House, will be a
lasting legacy to young Suffolk architect
A house designed by one of Suffolk’s top architects is about to be
constructed, four months after his death in November last year, at
the age of 39. Before he died, Mark Savin, who lived with his wife
Sarah in Bury St Edmunds, came up with plans for a building called
‘The Tree House’ on a one-acre site in Great Barton.
Now that the plans have been approved, local company Bakers
Construction is about to build the property, after which it will be
sold by regional estate agent Bedfords, with an asking price of
£1.25m.
Bedfords Partner Emmerson Dutton said. “The Tree House will be
a fitting tribute to Mark and his work. It’s a unique and individual
home which will be a lasting legacy to a remarkable man. He was
a gifted and talented architect, passionate about his projects, as
well as his TVR sports car and the Danish toy bricks, Lego. His
memory will live on in this building, which is now on the point of
construction.”
The Tree House will be a three storey property, covered externally
with cherry wood cladding, and with views of the historic woodland
in which it is set from all sides. The clever design means that the
main body of the living accommodation is on the highest level,
with the living areas and kitchen/breakfast room on the second
floor. The three bedrooms occupy the mid-floor, served by
two bathrooms. The ground-floor entrance to the property has
immediate access to a boot/utility room, cloakroom and study.
There are terraces and planters at every level.
Great Barton is a much-favoured village because of its close
proximity to Bury St Edmunds, a mere three miles away. The
village itself has a shop and post office, as well as a garage, church
and primary school
Emmerson Dutton explained: “The brief for The Tree House
was clear from the outset - to ensure the house owner was lost
amongst the outstanding woodland plot with every view from the
living accommodation forming part of the canopy of ancient trees.
Mark was incredibly passionate about contemporary design and
sustainable living, and his excitement was clearly felt by those that
worked alongside him.”
Mark, who was President of the Royal Institute of British
Architects (RIBA) in Suffolk and President Elect of RIBA in the
Eastern Region when he died, had founded his own firm Infinity
Architects in 2014, Aoife O’Gorman. He had spent the last year
living his life to the full after recovering from a mountain-biking
crash in August 2015.
Emmerson Dutton added: “Mark Savin was a kind and gifted
individual who was taken from us far too soon. But his vision will live
on in this stunning property, which when finished will not only be
one of the most incredible in Suffolk, but also the whole of the UK.”
Written by Adrian Peel
Gateway to Fine Living
Adrian Peel talked to the owners of
The Gate House on School Road, Risby,
a delightful grade II-listed property
Located in Risby, close to Bury St Edmunds and Newmarket and
a 30-minute drive from Cambridge, this three-storey detached
property combines a traditional exterior with an attractive welldesigned
interior. The Gate House, a Georgian period family home,
is also superbly located and set in around 0.88 acres of beautiful
gardens.
Mr and Mrs Roger Shuttler have lived in the house for 23 years and
their two sons grew up in what has been a wonderful family home.
The house is believed to have been built between 1810 and 1830
and extended in around 1860. Then in
“We’ve done
nothing to
the house
structurally;
it’s just needed
redecorating.”
the 1930s, one Colonel Lawrence built a
separate thatched playroom – a doubleheight
room for his children, which has
been put to various uses over the years.
“What attracted us was a) the beautifully
proportioned rooms – there was lots of
space for the children to play in,” said
Roger, “and b) my wife is very pleased
with its location because she can nip up
to Newmarket for the races.”
Roger continued: “We’ve done nothing to the house structurally; it’s
just needed redecorating and the garden was a bit of a mess when
we moved in. We planted roses and that sort of thing.”
Discussing other things they found when they moved in, Roger said:
“The sitting room had off-white, shiny white
striped Chinese-style wallpaper, and one of
the first things we did was strip all that off.
“We also replaced the green marble around
the fireplace with black marble. We didn’t
put wallpaper back up – we just painted it in
soft colours, very near to what the original
colour was.”
The couple have decorated the house
in a tasteful and subtle style, making it a
pleasantly inviting abode. Why have they
decided to move? “I’m in my 70s,” replied
Roger. “I’ve always done the garden and
now we need somewhere smaller. It’s a big
house – five bedrooms – and now we’ve
found a new one nearby.”
Asked to describe his favourite features of
the house, Roger said: “If you look at the
hall, it’s got an original Georgian fanlight and
you can look up through the curved bit and
look out of the window – that’s a very nice
aspect. We often have fires in the sitting
room too, which makes it very cosy.”
Roger’s wife Melanie added “We don’t really
could enjoy this big house as well.
But we’re very sad to leave it – it’s simply
lovely.” Melanie continued: “Our bedroom
has got the most lovely view and in the
garden, you’ve got a lovely view of the
church. The garden is gorgeous all year
round, really.”
The garden also houses an old gypsy
caravan, which has an interesting use.
“That doesn’t go with the house,” laughed
Melanie, explaining where it came from,
“unless I get offered a huge amount of
money.
“My father was a jockey and he used to
ride all over the country. When he went to
Yarmouth Races, he always saw it at Red
Lodge for years. He said he’d always rather
fancied that caravan and negotiated with
the farmer whose land it was sitting on.
They used it as a bar and my husband has
completely restored it. It’s over 100 years
old, but it’s a bar inside – it’s rather fun.”
Virtual Vehicles Are
Phil Huff visits the Geneva
Motor Show
AUDI Q2

Motoring
Phil Huff pays a flying visit to the motor show
in Switzerland and finds makers falling over
themselves to announce their autonomous
motoring developments
French air traffic controllers played a significant part in this year’s
International Geneva Motor Show, their strike action ensuring
that those of us who’d chosen to fly in and out of the Swiss city in
a day were delayed on the way out.
To add insult to injury, cancellations started flowing through later
in the day, but not until we’d left the show and rushed through
the airport. It meant that the day was shortened dramatically,
leading to press conferences being missed, interview
opportunities lost and reveals already being revealed. Nobody
cares, though, as it’s all about the cars - and there were plenty of
those.
As the sub-zero temperatures and driving rain made life
outside miserable, I darted through the first door I found and
immediately thought I’d stumbled into the wrong show.
In front of me was every kind of car wash you could ever imagine.
Karcher make great jetwash systems, but who knew they made
enormous automatic machines for trucks? And who knew there’d
be so many different companies competing for what I now
assume is a massive industry?
Finding my way through the brushes, Kia’s stand was the first of
the proper show I found. Stinger took pride of place, looking all
grand tourer in final production spec, but it was the funky little
Picanto in GT-Line trim that attracted my attention. I probably
do need to get out more, but the new Picanto looks like an
excellent little car that I’m looking forward to testing next month.
What I won’t be testing is the Performante, the track-honed
‘streetfighter’ version of the Lamborghini Huracan. The fact that
bodyguards were doing their best to prevent photographs being
taken of the car did make me wonder quite why they’d bothered
to display it at all, but if you can print money then wasting a bit
won’t hurt.
Also preventing photos being taken of cars were the typical bevy
of beautiful blonde bombshells, coincidentally on International
Women’s Day. I’m not the world’s greatest feminist, but I do
wonder whether it’s entirely necessary to drape models over cars
in 2017. Is it a case that manufacturers have so little confidence
Article by Phil Huff
in their cars that lycra-clad women need to be paraded around
them to distract punters?
Or is it a case that I might not spot the five metres of shiny
metal, rotating endlessly under bright lights in the centre of a
stand, without somebody who looks like they’re about to go to a
cocktail party vaguely waving their hand towards it? The motoring
industry is better than this, isn’t it?
You can trust Volvo to keep things clean, crisp and efficient. On a
roll since the launch of the XC90, the Swedes brought along its
baby brother, the XC60.
Despite sharing much of its mechanical bits with the larger
model, the 60 stands out as a unique model, with those ‘Thor’s
Hammer’ headlights extending into a more defined grille. A long
bonnet and roofline give a purposeful stance and banish the old
model’s I-couldn’t-afford-an-XC90 styling.
My desire for a bit of Swedish sumptuousness is well known, but
the XC60 really does look like
a winner. As does the Racemo, a mid-engined, rear-wheel-drive,
two-seater sports car from, er, Tata.
Closest in spirit to a Mazda MX-5, there’s a tiny 1.2-litre
turbocharged engine that produces 187bhp, which is probably
plenty in a car that looks like it’ll weigh just
this side of nothing.
Sadly, Tata will be building just 250 of
them, more as a proof of concept than a
full commercial offering, but if you miss
out, don’t worry – you can download a
virtual model of the car to drive in Forza
Horizon 3 on the Xbox games console.
There was an air of the virtual to the whole
show, with seemingly every manufacturer
falling over themselves to announce their
own autonomous motoring developments,
with BMW even declaring themselves as
being a technology firm.
This is all a little sad for motoring
enthusiasts, although I’ll concede that I
could quite happily let the car take over
as I queue along the A14, but if this selfdriving-car
utopia ever arrives then it will
leave cars as little more than white goods.
Volkswagen had its own white-goodsmobile
in Geneva, but confusingly failed to
take it alongto the show.
Revealed at a press conference the
night before, the Sedric is a miserablelooking
beige box capable of completely
autonomous driving – the holygrail for
driverless motoring – that would transport
four passengers around without anybody
ever taking the wheel.
Oddly, the car didn’t wear a badge from
any of the VW group brands, but instead
was labelled simply as ‘Volkswagen Group’.
A spokesperson explained, unconvincingly,
that it’s a group project so couldn’t wear
an individual badge, but I’m putting two
and two together and making about 74 –
this is our first look at what could be the
Apple iCar. If it can take me home without
any interference from French air traffic
control, then I’m all for it.
Motoring
“If JK Rowling made a Harry Potter book about hotcakes,
then the Audi Q2 would be the motoring
equivalent,” says Phil Huff, motoring expert
in his latest review of the model
Introducing The Audi Q2
Regardless of how good the product is,
Audi just won’t be able to make enough
of them. With SUV and crossover sales
booming, and Audi seemingly unable to
do wrong in the eyes of the buying public,
combining the two must create a winning
combination, right?
Audi has provided everything needed to
take advantage of the boom; there’s a
range of engines to suit all needs, from
a tiny 1.0-litre petrol through to the
2.0-litre turbo diesel in this test model.
Generating 187bhp, this is the hottest
version of the Q2 (at least until the
inevitable SQ2 appears) and comes paired
with a seven-speed automatic gearbox and
Audi’s quattro all-wheel drive system.
That should ensure decent handling,
and there’s no doubt that the Q2 is a
reasonably agile little number. It’s broadly
similar to the A3 hatchback that it shares
so much under the skin with, with a little
extra ride height and body mass. This
doesn’t upset the balance too much, but
even with the quattro system it does tend
to understeer when pushed to the limits.
It remains utterly predictable and entirely
safe, though.
The progressive steering system - it alters
how far the front wheels turn when you
spin the steering wheel depending on your
speed - actually works well and doesn’t
leave you wishing for an old-fashioned
linear system. Switch the Drive Select
system on the dashboard to Dynamic
mode and the steering gets more direct,
while the throttle response gets sharper
and the gearbox shifts ratios more quickly.
Still, a Mini Countryman will undoubtedly
be more fun.
Oddly, it’s the gearbox in this Q2 that lets
the side down a little. Despite being a dualclutch
setup, a system that should be quick
and smooth, it just takes too long to shift
gears and leaves the car feeling surprisingly
lethargic. A quick run out in the 1.0-litre
petrol version, with its traditional six-speed
automatic gearbox, felt every bit as zesty
despite having half the engine and 25%
less power. You could argue that the extra
weight of the diesel engine and quattro
running gear will make a difference to how
the car feels, but 150bhp in a small car
should feel more lively.
MODEL TESTED:
Audi Q2 quattro 2.0 TDI
S line S tronic
• Price: £31,080
• Range: £20,700 - £36,200
• Top speed: 135 mph
• 0-62 mph: 7.0 seconds
• Official fuel economy: 58.9 mpg
• CO2 emissions: 125 g/km
• Car tax: £160 Yr1 / £140
• BIK: 25%
• Power: 150 PS (148 bhp)
• Torque: 400 Nm (295 ft lb)
• Weight: 1,440 kg
At least everything is as it should be on the
inside. Audi’s quality controllers have been
let loose in the cabin, ensuring it’s another
masterpiece of design, with materials and
build to match. The all-digital instrument
binnacle, Virtual Cockpit, makes an
appearance again, although this time it’s a
£1,500 option that includes an improved
infotainment system, satellite navigation
and in-car Wi-Fi. That’s a lot of money for
a flash dashboard, but the other additions
might swing the balance in its favour.
What doesn’t quite work is a pop-up
plastic screen for the head-up display;
when everything else feels so suitably
premium, the cheapness jars irritatingly.
It’s always a small detail that annoys most.
Despite its diminutive proportions,
space inside is generally acceptable,
although legroom in the back gets a tad
tight if anybody over average height is in
the driver’s seat. The boot is large as
well, although there’s quite a lip to lift
things over.
You’ll have to get over the price, too.
While the range starts at just under
£21,000, this top-spec S-Line model
comes in at £31,080, and that opens up
a lot of other capable SUV options. To
compensate, running costs should be low
with official figures suggesting economy as
high as 56mpg. That’ll be optimistic for an
SUV with four-wheel drive, even a small
one, but if it’s economy you’re after then
eschew the quattro system, drop to the
1.6-litre diesel, and you’ll get something
that feels just as lively but will sip at fuel
and leave you with around £6,000 in your
pocket. That undercuts the likes of the
Mercedes GLA and BMW X1 on price,
but retains the premium feel that Audi
gets so right.
Resist the temptation to keep spending
more and stick to the mid-range engines
and front-wheel drive options (you’re not
really going to go off-road, are you?) and
the Q2 is the near-perfect car for the
SUV-loving market, proving less really
is more.
First Drive:
Mercedes-Benz E-Class Coupe
The Mercedes-Benz E-Class Coupe aims to
offer all of the luxury and refinement found
in the larger S-Class Coupe. Does it achieve
this? Jack Evans finds out…
WHAT’S NEW?
Here’s the latest car to slot into Mercedes’ ever-expanding
line-up – the E-Class Coupe. Coming as a smaller version of the
decadent S-Class Coupe but larger than the C-Class Coupe, it
aims to give drivers all of the luxury associated with the German
manufacturer’s highest-specification cars but with a sleek, rakedback
design.
MODEL TESTED:
Mercedes-Benz E-Class Coupe
Engine: 2.0-litre turbocharged diesel
Transmission: Nine-speed automatic
Performance: 0-60mph in 7.2 secs, 149mph top speed
Economy: 61.4mpg (combined cycle)
Emissions: 119g/km CO2
LOOKS & IMAGE
The exterior is a thing of real beauty. There’s just one trim – AMG
Line – but that does help to keep things simple. All come with
large 19-inch alloy wheels plus LED headlights and taillights, which
help give the E-Class a distinctive visual appeal. It’s also 143mm
longer and 74mm wides than the car it replaces. What does that
mean though? It helps the car to look hunkered-down and squat
on the road, and certainly gives it a far sportier appearance than
the previous-generation E-Class Coupe.
SPACE & PRACTICALITY
As a coupe, you’d expect practicality in the E-Class to be pretty
limited. However, those in the back get 74mm more legroom,
while headroom isn’t bad either – though very tall passengers may
have a bit of trouble thanks to the car’s sloping roofline. The boot
is a decent size too, and can be expanded thanks to folding rear
seats. Up front, there’s a good amount of room. The entire cabin
has a great sense of space thanks to large, pillarless windows and
the sunroof. It’s a relaxing place to be, and one that certainly feels
worthy of the Mercedes-Benz badge.
BEHIND THE WHEEL
Large luxurious coupes such as the E-Class have a difficult job on
their hands. They need to be cossetting and relaxing to drive, but
involving and sporty too. The E-Class Coupe does an admirable
job of ticking the vast majority of those boxes. On standard
springs, it rides very well. Yes, at slower speeds it can be a touch
jostling, but when up and running it soaks up bumps in the road
impressively. The 2.0-litre diesel engine under the bonnet is a
crucial part of the Mercedes-Benz range, and you can see why.
It’s really very refined, and settles down nicely at cruising speeds.
There are a few grumbles at lower speeds and around town, but
that’s to be expected of a small-capacity diesel. A wider rear
track than its predecessor does help the E-Class Coupe corner
nicely, though go into the bends too hard and it will be inclined to
understeer. That’s understandable though – it makes no claim to
be an out-and-out sports car.
WHO WOULD BUY ONE?
It’s is ideal for those who want a luxurious, well-specified and
premium way of getting around.
