Don’t wait until you have a problem to visit us Do you have a fitness goal? If so, is it going to plan? At Surrey Physiotherapy we not only treat all manner of sporting injuries but also help people to optimise their physical potential to improve performance and reduce the risk of injury through our Fit to Compete service. Fit to Compete is run by our Chartered Sports Physiotherapist, Ben Austen, who is also a qualified massage therapist and strength and conditioning specialist. Ben previously worked for Crystal Palace Football Club and is currently undertaking the FIFA Medical Diploma. He was also recently appointed Head Physiotherapist for Surrey Senior Women’s Cricket Club. So who better to work with you on all matters fitness related? How does it work? Ben has a special interest and experience in optimising physical conditioning and long term athlete development. As part of the Fit to Compete programme, he will: • Take a clinical and training history • Perform a physical assessment • Work with you to set goals • Devise a bespoke programme for you • Undertake regular reviews to keep your training on track, making alterations based on your specific needs Ben said: “Injury prevention is proven to be performance enhancing and our Fit to Compete service is about optimising your potential to perform. It’s suitable for everyone – whether you’re simply running for fun, playing competitive sport at the weekend or training five times a week – and it will help you to optimise your training as well as address any niggles or twinges you may be having in your sport or activity.” At Surrey Physiotherapy we also offer treatment of sports injuries from the acute stage through to the final rehabilitation. And we have experience in treating all levels of athletes ranging from elite through to club and recreational players. We use a variety of treatment methods to optimise our clients’ recovery, including mobilisation, massage and progressive strength and conditioning programming. Lucy, a Marathon Runner said: “I came to Ben with a painful runner’s knee which was stopping me from running with ease. He conducted a thorough assessment and devised a treatment program for me. A few weeks on, I am now able to run without worrying about my knee. I’m so pleased I made that appointment.” Ben has a special interest in injuries of the ankle, knee and hip in both adults and children. But his expertise also extends to the treatment and rehabilitation of spinal pain and shoulder issues – particularly as a result of his work with the cricket club. Outside his clinic work, Ben supports the Surrey Physiotherapy sponsored Kinetic Foundation’s football and education program and the Falls Prevention class for older adults.
