Ian's "Hare bells" shows how a simple subject can make a stunning image. "It was taken in the Lake District, early one morning lying on my stomach with a telephoto lens on my Yashica many years ago. I used a wide aperture to de-focus the background but since Photoshop has come along I adjusted the exposure, blurred the background a bit more and sharpened up the flower. That's about it really...less work than many of my images undergo." The last of our winter visitors will leave these shores for their breeding grounds, but there may still be a chance to catch up with the odd Redwing, Fieldfare, Siskin or Redpoll before they go. There is even half a chance that another flock of Waxwings will drop into Croydon on their way back north. By the time you read this, the first summer visitors should be in. Warblers such as Blackcap, Chiffchaff and Whitethroat will be taking up their summer quarters during the month. Although they do not breed here, species such as Sand Martin, Ring Ouzel and Wheatear stop off during their migrations to breeding sites elsewhere in the country. The martins might be seen at one of our water bodies such as South Norwood CP or South Norwood Lake and the others may be encountered on the downs or other grassy open spaces. And now many of our birds, both resident and summer visitors, will be bursting into song. Dawn and dusk are the best times to hear them, but at this time of year the imperative to hold territories and attract a mate is such that they could be singing throughout the day. You do not have to go anywhere special; your own garden could be alive with bird song. But to hear the Skylarks ascending you will need to go to a piece of downland (Riddlesdown and Farthing Downs are good). We would always like to hear about your sightings, so please get in touch.
