Banking on the holidays
We have a slew of bank holidays to look
forward to. The Easter weekend kicking
things off and followed in hot pursuit by
the May and Spring bank holidays.
I appreciate that for some people
these days do not represent a day off but
for many it is a welcome break after the
drudgery of the wintertime.
Good Friday's symbolism is well about -
a day devoted to remembering the death
of Jesus. There is a bank holiday and
Christians all over the country join together
in public gatherings to mark the day. It is
generally a fairly serious affair -
encouraging personal reflection. This is
because the death of Jesus was only
necessary because humankind has fallen
short of God's standards and needed a
saviour.
However Easter Sunday seems a less noticeable
event. Its bank holiday
being carried forward to the Monday and
Christians tending to meet in their own
churches rather than in public. The overall
impression may well be that Good Friday
is the main event - and Easter Sunday is
somehow less important.
The death of Jesus without his miraculous
resurrection (coming back to life) is simply
a tragedy. However together they mark
the greatest victory for humankind. Easter
Sunday is hugely significant since it shows
that Jesus was not defeated at his death.
It was a calculated action of great cost to
God that ended in celebration.
Easter Sunday means that not
only is there a way out of our wrongdoing
and it's spiritual consequences but also
that we have a risen saviour. Jesus, who
has overcome death itself and offers us life.
As you tuck in to your Easter eggs and
(hopefully) enjoy a sunny weekend you
might want to take a moment to consider
the significance of the life offered to you by
the risen Jesus.
Have a great month.
